The backdrop to American Horror Story season 6, our Us chums look at the lost colony of Roanoke, its myths and pop culture appearances...
In case you missed it, the American Horror Story season 6 theme has been revealed, and it is a bloody Roanoke Nightmare indeed. After promoting the new season without releasing a single frame of footage, the ever-cryptic Ryan Murphy has now unveiled his true crime satire-meets-American Gothic to a surprised public, leading many to wonder… what is Roanoke again?
Despite a misconception in some quarters that the name infamously tied to the words “Lost Colony” was made up for the series, and that this fictional ghost story was set in Virginia (Roanoke is in present day North Carolina), Roanoke is indeed a real place, and the ghost stories around it are every bit as strange—if not stranger—than anything American Horror Story has dreamed up.

Mark L. Lester is a friend to horror and wild cinema in general. Though his name may not be instantly recognizable to some, a quick look at his credentials will rectify that!
He produced and contributed to the script for Tobe Hooper’s wonderfully weird The Funhouse. As a director, his savage and prophetic Class of 1984 still disturbs to this day, for an unnerving amount of reasons. His adaptation of Firestarter captured a freakish tornado of both unintentional and deliberate violence. And the battering ram impact of Commando, his most successful feature, remains respected worldwide.
Recognize him now? And do you want a chance to win an autographed DVD of Class of 1984 or Commando (see details below)?
Indeed, Firestarter and Commando are lined up for remakin’. Surprise, surprise. While the two 80’s staples are being put back through the machine, Lester is staying busy ushering new films onto...

Ex-business-guy-turned-actor Michael Teh is one of those multicultural hotties we so rarely get to feast our eyes upon in horror and sci-fi movies like Megashark vs. Giant Octopus. This versatile and sexy Australian-born actor has been everyone from Jesus to a sexy Native American fighting off hordes of angry ghosts in the sci-fi/horror Wraiths of Roanoke to a member of a medieval Mongol horde. Michael gets to action-your-socks-off in his new movie White Wall - a futuristic thriller in which he displays tons of leather and ass-kicking. Hopefully a drop-kick or two. Maybe a shirtless scene? Michael joins us as Mr. June in our growing pantheon of Scary Studs. I hope you enjoy him as much as we do...

The pairing of Roger Corman, the 20th century’s king of B-moviemeisters, and the Sci Fi Channel, which doles out cubes of processed cheese week after week, should occur far more often. Not necessarily because their collaborations are that noteworthy, but rather because it seems predestined that these two work together.
The man responsible for The Saga Of The Viking Women And Their Voyage To The Waters Of The Great Sea Serpent (credited here as producer alongside his wife Julie) and the network that churned out S.S. Doomtrooper? They were made for each other, regardless of the results.
And what of these results? The most recent, Cyclops, is about as mixed a bag as they come. With shockingly impressive sets (for this network) and a well-rounded cast, this ancient-Rome-set epic should have been far better than it is—but still earns points for being less mediocre than many of...

Fango caught up with screenwriter Rafael Jordan to chat about his latest creature feature Yeti, which premieres on the Sci Fi Channel this Saturday, November 8 at 9 p.m. before hitting DVD from Genius Products as part of its Maneater DVD series January 13 (see item here). Jordan describes his freaky tale as Alive with the Abominable Snowman (pictured with producer Daniel Grodnik) thrown in for extra gruesomeness, as it involves a college football team stranded in the Himalayas after surviving a plane crash.
The latest in the scripter’s string of Sci Fi flicks (also including Copperhead and Wraiths Of Roanoke, a.k.a. Lost Colony) also provides a bit of insight to the titular colossal critter’s history. “We start off in the early 1930s on an expedition, though of course most of the movie takes place later, in modern times,” Jordan tells us. “But since there’s such a...
