MTV’s annual Movie Awards – now with TV attached – was as irreverent as usual on Sunday night. And yet, with this year’s entry, the tone was noticeably different.

Sure, the beach, barbecues and vacations are nice for the general population, but we pop culture junkies know that the best part of summer is San Diego Comic-Con. All the fun kicks off on July 18, and we're getting ready to head back to the West Coast to keep you in the loop on what you can expect from some of the hottest upcoming movies.
Team NextMovie will be in full effect at Comic-Con 2013, with editors Kevin Polowy and Kase Wickman on the ground to cover panels, snap photos, pop into the MTV live stream and hang out on San Diego roofdecks at night for no particular reason. Kevin is most excited to see Harrison Ford outdo his 2010 handcuffs bit by entering the "Ender's Game" panel fully engulfed in flames (you heard it here and on multiple other blogs first), while Kase is super-psyched to see the cast of "Divergent" jump off of things.

Oh Sit! Premieres Tonight on TheCW
I'm not afraid to admit that I love ABC's Wipeout, and if you're willing to admit you love it too then you will also love Oh Sit!, which premieres on TheCW tonight at 8pm Et. With "The Amazing Spider-Man" crossing the $400 million plateau after just one week of release, it's no surprise that Hollywood studios have reboot fever. That extends to the "Twilight" franchise, which is four months away from wrapping up with "Breaking Dawn Part 2." Could things start over in the near future?
Back in June, rumors swirled that Lionsgate was thinking about restarting the franchise in a few years with an all-new cast, something that Lionsgate executive Rob Friedman sort of denied in an interview with Deadline.com.

Singer's death at age 27 and the comeback that never was is our #10 Newsmaker of the year.
By Gil Kaufman
Amy Winehouse
Photo: Getty Images
If I had gone to journalism school, I'm sure one of the first things they would have taught me would have been to remain objective in my reporting and not get too emotionally involved in the subjects I cover.
But, just like the deaths of Kurt Cobain, Aaliyah and Sublime's Brad Nowell, I cared more than was probably professionally prudent when I found out that Amy Winehouse had died.
I didn't personally know Winehouse, had never interviewed her and had only seen her perform a few times. But something about her titanic talent spoke to me, almost as much as the fascination I (and all of us, I suspect) had about her madcap, edge-of-a-knife life. We love reading (and writing) about the chaos of stars' lives...

'Jackass' star's death is our #7 Newsmaker of the year, proving fans appreciated the bearded daredevil as much as we did.
By Gil Kaufman
Ryan Dunn
Photo: Getty Images
A lot of people view their co-workers as being a kind of extended family. Here at MTV, though, the madmen of "Jackass" really are part of our gang. They've taken over our studios, filled our prime time with outrageous spin-off programs and used their original half-hour show as a launchpad to worldwide fame.
So it was with an especially heavy heart that we reported on "Jackass" star Ryan Dunn's death in a high-speed car crash in June. His untimely passing is #7 on MTV News' Top Newsmakers of 2011 list, indicating the world seemed to share in our appreciation for Bam Margera's bearded best pal.

This year we lost some of our brightest stars: artists that spanned the genres of rock, hip-hop and pop, as well as TV and film. They were at different stages in their careers — some just starting to rise, others already legends — but all left a distinct mark on pop culture, and their deaths affected us deeply.
Beloved hip-hop icons Nate Dogg and Heavy D influenced the generations of artists who followed them. Nate (born Nathaniel Hale) died at age 41 after suffering several health setbacks related to a stroke. One of the key players in the birth of the West Coast G-Funk sound, the crooner's silky smooth vocals touched classic tracks from Snoop Dogg and Warren G to 50 Cent and Ludacris.

More than a few hip-hop fans will point to Kanye West's single "Monster" as a defining moment in Nicki Minaj's rap career. The newcomer from Queens, New York, managed to one-up Jay-z on the track, with arguably one of the best verses of 2010, but it wasn't until this year that the Trinidad-born firecracker broke through the noise and took pop culture by storm, catapulting her career to new heights.
Fresh off a stint alongside Lil Wayne on the I Am Still Music Tour, which grossed $47 million in the U.S., Minaj — #6 on MTV News' Top Newsmakers of 2011 list — made one of her biggest career leaps when she scored a spot opening for Britney Spears' Femme Fatale Tour. It's a common misconception that going to jail can make a rapper hot. Other than Tupac, who emerged from his mid-1990s prison bid a bigger star than he was when he went in, most artists struggle to develop post-prison musical dominance: Shyne has yet to capitalize on his almost nine-year bid, Gucci Mane has spent most of the year behind bars, and T.I. is just now starting to put his troubles behind him.
Credit Lil Wayne with beating the odds and becoming one of MTV News' #3 Top Newsmaker of the Year. When you think of the Best Artists of 2011 — Lady Gaga, Adele, Katy Perry, the Throne — none of them had to face what Wayne did.

As 2011 draws to a close, it's difficult to look back over the past 12 months and not remember all the headlines made by one Lady Gaga.
Unlike some of her pop contemporaries, Gaga never seemed to take a day off. Hers was an unending, 365-day news cycle, a constant stream of tabloid speculation, Twitter missives, high-gloss fashion shoots, globe-spanning promotional appearances, red-carpet escapades, super-secret video projects, television specials and political stunts. On top of all that, she somehow also found time to release Born This Way, not only the year's most anticipated album, but one of its most thought-provoking and forward-thinking too. At the end of the third year of her reign, it's no longer a question of when she sleeps, but if she does at all.

One doesn't need Alice Cullen's powers of prognostication to foretell fang-tastic returns for "The Twilight Saga."
Four years in, and the success of the franchise is a foregone conclusion. To wit, the penultimate film in the series, "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1," has grossed more than $600 million worldwide since its November release and even set a new record by becoming the first installment to top the box office three weekends in a row. And it also landed at #2 on MTV News' Top Newsmakers of 2011 list, falling short only to Lady Gaga.
It'd be tempting to chalk up this particular installment's massive appeal to one little (though very loaded) word: sex. As any avowed Twilighter will tell you, "Breaking Dawn - Part...

Every major entertainment news story has a life cycle. First it breaks and is inescapable as every detail of the event takes on an aura of significance (think the carat count on Britney Spears' engagement ring). With interest still high but new information scarce, the analysis begins. We reporters look to experts to see what it all means and to fans to find out what they think and how they feel about what's gone down. There are follow-ups and roundups as bright and shiny fresh news bits come together with what we already know to tell the whole story. Everywhere you went in 2011 it seemed like Adele was there. With such hard-to-escape singles as "Rolling in the Deep," "Someone Like You," "Rumor Has It" and "Set Fire to the Rain," she ruled the charts and radio on her way to landing the year's best-selling album with 21.
If she were taking a page from the Rihanna playbook, that would mean that right about now, the British belter would be hard at work on a follow-up to her smash. But, in keeping with the long, slow burn of "Rolling" and her generally less hectic pace, Adele recently told Billboard magazine that she's taking her time with album #3.

Mac Miller's live performance of "Knock Knock" in Chicago is a fairly good reflection of what you're in for at one of his concerts: very little gravity, a lot of movement and fans who could easily understudy for the rapper because they know every word to every track.
It's his pumped-up, feel-good presence that puts him on the list of contenders for the Best MTV Live Performance of 2011.
And we totally understand why he made the list. Just last week, when we checked out Mac's set at New York's Best Buy Theater, it wasn't so much a concert as it was a gigantic school's-out-forever party. He proved to be a very capable Mc in both the literal and hip-hop definitions,...
