While most people who make it far on American Idol are having the time of their lives, others have decided to leave the show in the middle of the competition for various reasons.
One singer said recently said she was quitting as she wanted to go home to her kids and she didn’t think she was going to win anyways. Another singer said she didn’t think she was able to give 100 percent, so she decided to just leave the show.
There are 11 other former contestants who have quit the show or were removed by producers, including one that made it all the way to the final five.

Grey’s Anatomy’s revolving door just keeps swinging. On the heels of Ellen Pompeo’s exit as a series regular and showrunner Krista Vernoff’s announcement that this season will be her last (for now, anyway) comes word that Kelly McCreary is also departing.
The Thursday, April 13, episode of ABC’s resurgent drama will mark the actress’ final appearance as a series regular, according to our sister site Deadline. Her character — Meredith Grey’s half sister, Maggie Pierce — will likely leave Seattle rather than stay and work on her foundering marriage to fellow doctor Winston Ndugu. That seems to be the mantra for the fourth edition in the wildly successful John Wick franchise. There is certainly more action with a whopping 14 action sequences, nearly four times the amount in previous Wick flicks; more locations including a Bond-like global journey from Jordan to Japan to Paris to Berlin; and like so many recent films more running time at 169 minutes, and you will want to stay right to the end of the end credits to get the most bang for your bucks.
The John Wicks are indeed progressively getting longer and a little more bloated since the tight 101-minute 2014 original, the 122-minute 2017 Chapter 2, and the 130-minute Chapter 3: Parabellum. This one has grown by nearly 40 minutes, but for the most part never slows down and remains a feast for fans of star Keanu Reeves’ command of this martial arts/gun fu/now car fu too genre.

"Hasn't beaten me yet..." Grab your six-shooter and rally 'round for this fun trailer. A theatrical Us trailer has debuted for Sweetwater, or Sweet Vengeance, a western from director Logan Miller (of Touching Home) starring January Jones with the "strawberry hair, purple dress, all painted up." She ends up in a "blood triangle" involving a renegade Sheriff, played by Ed Harris, and a fanatical religious leader, played by Jason Isaacs. As much fun as this looks, I can't say I'm that interested, especially considering I haven't heard much positive buzz at all. Ed Harris looks like he'll be entertaining to watch but that's about it. Enjoy. Here's the full Us trailer for Logan Miller's Sweetwater (aka Sweet Vengeance), found via The Playlist: In the late 1800s, a fanatical religious leader, a renegade Sheriff, and a former prostitute collide in a blood triangle on the rugged plains of the New Mexico Territory.

Released straight to DVD here in the UK last month, under the title Sweet Vengeance, Sweetwater premiered at Sundance at the start of the year, and boasts an all-star cast led by January Jones.
And whilst no release date has yet been set in the States, a slightly new trailer has surfaced online, the first bearing the Sweetwater title, giving us a look at Jones front and centre in the Western.
Against the backdrop of the American Old West, newlyweds Miguel and Sarah struggle to make a living cultivating their small patch of land. Soon a much bigger struggle arises as powerful landowner and community preacher Prophet Josiah makes a play for their property. As he launches his diabolical plot to take their land, an eccentric big-city sheriff comes to town. Things soon go from bad to worse, culminating in a jaw-dropping, hell-hath-no-fury showdown.

The new movie is directed by Logan Miller, who last directed Harris in "Touching Home" back in 2008. So yeah, January Jones is leading a western and don't worry if you forgot about it. In fact, the film titled "Sweetwater" (though it seems to be going as "Sweet Vengeance" in some territories) even premiered at Sundance back in January, but the reception was so muted (some folks have told us it was awful) that the movie is still without a U.S. distributor. But international openings await, and thus we have our first trailer. Well, they certainly made the most of exploding ketchup packets. Yep, the blood really flies in "Sweetwater" even if the movie seems to be a pretty generic tale with a gender twist. Logan and Noah Miller, have teamed with Jones and re-teamed with Ed Harris (after working with him on "Touching Home"), for this story set in 1886 New Mexico where a young widow seeks revenge for the murder of her husband at the hands of a brutal rancher.

Six years ago, Logan and Noah Miller ambushed Ed Harris after a screening at the San Francisco Film Festival and told him that he had to play their late father in their movie. The Old West is portrayed as a venal loony bin in Sweetwater, a handsomely designed, occasionally funny but ultimately empty female vengeance yarn. With one foot in a goofy spaghetti Western universe and the other in Kill Bill Tarantino territory where characters expound with unexpected loquaciousness, Logan and Noah Miller’s follow-up to their 2008 debut Touching Home, also starring Ed Harris, offers intermittent distractions for genre fans but lacks sufficient size or distinction to go very far theatrically. Ed Harris has had a long standing career playing memorable characters in a variety of features, from Glengarry Glen Ross to The Rock to A History of Violence. Along the way, he has garnered more than a few fans of his work, who look forward to any film he is involved in, which led to Sweetwater, his latest feature, getting a bump due to his involvement. The film is directed by Logan Miller, in the follow-up to his 2008 debut Touching Home, and is co-written by Logan and Noah Miller. Harris is joined onscreen by Jason Isaacs, Mad Men‘s January Jones, and Eduardo Noriega. The first clip from the film, which will be screening at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, has now been released, and can be seen below.

Mad Men‘s January Jones is set to star in a new period drama opposite Ed Harris called Sweetwater. Deadline reports that Logan and Noah Miller are set to direct, and Jason Netter is producing. Filming is slated to begin this July in New Mexico.
Sweetwater is set in 1886 and follows "a young widow (Jones) [who] risks all to avenge her husband’s murder at the hands of a brutal sheep rancher. Harris plays the town sheriff who helps Jones avenge her husband’s death."
Harris has worked with the Millers before on Touching Home, where he played a role based on their real life father. This sounds like a role that is perfect for Harris, and I am interested in seeing the beauty of New Mexico captured on screen.

I would never say the western is “dead” — no genre ever truly goes away, when you think about it — but I’m sorry to say its glory days may be forever gone. And although Sweetwater, like every other recent entry, will probably not lead to some massive revival that makes the horses and guns tale vital again, is there any reason the thing can’t be pretty good in its own right?
Right from the start, things are at least looking okay. Deadline reports that January Jones will get to take off her fat suit when she and Ed Harris lead Sweetwater, which is now readying itself for a July start. Noah and Logan Miller — whose only prior feature, Touching Home, also starred Harris — are helming film, centered on a widow (Jones) in 1886 New Mexico who’s seeking to avenge the death of her husband at the hands of a...

The big screen career of "Mad Men" star January Jones has been a bit of a mixed bag. She earned acclaim and attention for her turn in Tommy Lee Jones' "The Three Burials Of Melquiades Estrada" but has otherwise floundered. The less said about "Seeking Justice" the better. And do you remember anything about her role in "X-Men: First Class" besides the lingerie she wore? Oh yeah, she was in "Unknown" too, but again, in such a throwaway, forgettable role it's not a shock it hasn't stuck in the memory. But perhaps this next endeavor will set things right.
Jones is teaming up with Ed Harris to star in the western(!) "Sweetwater." Set to be directed by Logan and Noah Miller (who previously worked with Harris on "Touching Home," and it seems they all got along), the story is set in 1886 New Mexico where a former high school teacher turns to dealing meth.

Those of you who have seen 2008's Appaloosa will know that Ed Harris is no stranger to the western genre, since he co-wrote, co-starred, and directed that film. In that same year, Harris worked with directors Logan and Noah Miller on their first feature, Touching Home, a true story in which Harris played the boys' father and the directors played themselves. Today, Deadline reports that Harris will star alongside January Jones for the Miller Brothers' second outing behind the camera on a western called Sweetwater. Jones plays a widow who must avenge her husband's murder and Harris is the sheriff who helps her. Read on! I haven't seen Touching Home, but when a veteran actor, writer, and director like Ed Harris has enough faith to work with these guys for a second time, that says all I need to know about the quality of their work. Since we’ve mostly seen January Jones as the immature, cold and calculating former Mrs Betty Draper on Mad Men, or the icy, cutting Emma Frost in X-Men: First Class, she doesn’t usually get the chance to show off her more emotional side. Another week, another Monday. So it’s time for the rundown of DVDs and Blu-ray’s hitting stores online and offline this week. It’s another packed week, with plenty of movies waiting to take you money, so let us breakdown the new releases and highlight what you should – and shouldn’t – be buying from today, March 19th 2012.
Pick(S) Of The Week
Tower Heist (DVD/Blu-ray)
A group of disgruntled luxury apartment employees, lead by Ben Stiller, attempt to take down their wealthiest resident (Alan Alda), who defrauded all of them from their pension plans. With the help of a recently-released ex-con (Eddie Murphy) who has a knack for robberies, a plan is in place to nab $20 million. Of course, what high-stakes, ensemble comedy would be complete without plenty of shenanigans to boot? The fantastic supporting cast includes Matthew Broderick, Casey Affleck, Gabourey Sidibe, Tia Leoni and Michael Pena.

Touching Home
Stars: Ed Harris, Robert Forster, Brad Dourif | Written and Directed by Logan and Noah Miller
Touching Home is a true story written and directed by Logan and Noah Miller about their relationship with their late father. With no previous experience of working in film and a budget of $2million (small beer in movieland), they have created an interesting and sensitive, if workmanlike film. Touching Home sees the twin brothers striving to break into professional baseball whilst dealing with their homeless and alcoholic father Charlie, played by an excellent Ed Harris.
Whilst the film is an impressive achievement in and of itself, though it pains me to say it, Touching Home is simply a little dull. It tends to meander and dwell too much where succinctness and implication would serve the film better and feels rather baggy around the edges. There’s a very televisual feel to proceedings, which marred my enjoyment somewhat.

In bringing Touching Home to the screen, Logan and Noah Miller have accomplished the impossible. When their homeless father died alone in a jail cell, they vowed that their autobiographical film would be made as a dedication to their love for him. With no money and no contacts, they persuaded four-time Oscar nominee Ed Harris (The Truman Show, The Hours) to star in the film and managed to assemble a cast and crew with 11 Academy Awards and 28 nominations between them.
In this emotionally charged drama, the Millers co-star as Lane and Clint Winston, twin brothers from a working class background who pursue professional baseball careers while trying to save their homeless, alcoholic father Charlie (an extraordinary performance by Harris). Based on their #1 bestselling memoir Either You’re In Or You’re In The Way, Touching Home is a moving account of overcoming enormous odds and a tale about family and the bonds that matter.

Dread Center and yours truly caught up with filmmaker Greg Beville this week to get the lowdown on Blackstar Canyon, an indie horror feature currently in pre-production which he wrote and will direct. Read on for the first details.
“We plan on shooting mid-summer 2012 in Newhall, California, on the Red Epic,” said Beville of the status of Blackstar Canyon, which is set to star Halloween series vet Danielle Harris as well as actors Brian Krause, Tiny Lister, Tippi Hedren (The Birds) and Belinda Balaski (The Howling). “The cinematographer will be Ricardo Gale (Touching Home),” Beville continued, “and Ty Mitchell ("Andy" in John Carpenter’s The Fog) will serve as camera operator.”
Having previously scripted the upcoming feature The Night Watch for Electric Cobalt Entertainment - the production house behind Blackstar Canyon - Beville described the latter as “a cross between Darabont’s The Mist and Repo Man, where hillbilly werewolves meet Hindu mythology.

2010 is probably a year best forgotten by Renee Zellweger, who not only appeared in the execrable "My Own Love Song," which went straight to Netflix, but also this thriller that was filmed in 2006, but didn't see a release until last fall. Zellweger stars as a social worker whose latest case involving a child (Jodelle Ferland) that she believes is a victim of abuse leads to something far more terrifying. Bradley Cooper and Ian McShane co-star.

When a food critic ("Humpday"'s Justin Leonard) takes a butcher knife to the restaurant of a celebrity chef (James LeGros), the chef plots the ultimate revenge in this gory satirical thriller from director Joe Maggio. (My review from the Los Angeles Film Festival is here.)

We know you were losing sleep over it, so we're happy to be the first to tell you that Furry Vengeance and Yogi Bear are both eligible to be nominated for Best Screenplay Oscars on January 25. Also that Marmaduke score that has been wearing out your iPod? It's eligible too. However, the inclusion of these 2010 masterpieces really isn't that big a surprise. With final nominations just over a month away the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that 241 screenplays - 134 original and 107 adapted - are eligible for a Best Screenplay nomination and that music from 77 films is eligible for Best Original Score (not including Black Swan, The Fighter or The Kids Are All Right [1]). Add those to the 248 films eligible [2] for Best Picture and Oscar voters have a lot of work to do in the coming weeks. Kind of. See the full lists, the favorites and read the rules after the jump.

The AMPAS have named 241 scripts eligible for the Academy Awards — 134 original, 107 adapted. Unlike the WGA, Winter’s Bone, King’s Speech, Toy Story 3, Never Let Me Go, and How to Train Your Dragon will be considered.
The AMPAS have also released the list of nominees for best score. The list was narrowed down to 77 scores, which makes Best Original Score the 2011 Oscar the category with the least number of films under consideration. The scores for Black Swan, True Grit, The Kids Are Alright and The Fighter will not be eligible to compete this year. Clint Mansell‘s Black Swan score and Carter Burwell‘s True Grit score were disqualified attributed to a designation within Rule 16 of the Academy’s Special Rules for Music Awards (5d under “Eligibility”), which excludes “scores diluted by the use of tracked themes or other pre-existing music.” Meanwhile, the scores for The Kids Are All Right,...

According to THR, 274 films were eligible in 2009, and 281 in 2008. Ed Harris has joined the cast of Summit Entertainment's Asger Leth-directed thriller Man On A Ledge. Titus Welliver, who's pulling double duty as an Irish arms dealer on Sons of Anarchy and also on The Good Wife, has also joined the cast that now includes Sam Worthington, Elizabeth Banks, Jamie Bell and Anthony Mackie. Harris, who appears in two Oscar season films: Peter Weir's The Way Back and Touching Home, plays a powerful businessman who is integral to the plot of a disgraced ex-cop who threatens to jump off the ledge of a building, while his brother pulls a heist nearby. Welliver plays a touch Bronx detective in charge of the crime scene.

If standards used in measuring a film festival's success are solely based on the fruition of its films, the Little Rock Film Festival continues to surpass those measurements. In its first three years, pre-distribution screenings like Knocked Up, That Evening Sun, Touching Home, Breaking Upwards and (500) Days of Summer have all gone on to further acclaim. This year is no exception.Having already snatched the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, Winter's Bone opened the Little Rock festival and went on to win Best Narrative. Co-writer/director Debra Granik continues the high quality of recent Southern films with her gripping Appalachian tale of Ree, a...

Dear reader: Got plans this evening? If you're in New York, then now you do: Join me at the Apple Store SoHo, where I'll be sitting down for a chat with the fearless filmmaking brothers Logan and Noah Miller. They'll be in town for a glimpse at their debut film Touching Home and its companion book Either You're In or You're in the Way, a double-barreled example of how even the greenest Hollywood outsiders can get a feature film made in 2010. All you have to do is ambush a four-time Oscar nominee.

Touching Home is a superior independent film that will certainly win your hearts. A lot of projects are called labors of love, but this one really is. Logan and Noah Miller put everything on the line to produce, direct and -- in a move that many might have thought insane -- play the lead roles, Clint and Lane Winston. Although officially proffered as a fictional narrative, the Millers, identical twins, are essentially playing themselves. The movie is a revelatory gem about their ambivalent but never loveless relationship with their father, played by Ed Harris, one of the finest actors around. Touching Home is a hard-edged, tough, yet beautiful film. The twins -- baseball players in their twenties, their sights set on profession contracts -- know how important it is for them to stick together. Clint says, "We're blessed, Lane. We've got...

In its seventh weekend, City Island expanded to take first place among limited releases, with Bollywood crime caper Housefull and previous limited champ The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo falling just behind it. New movies from Michael Caine and Nicole Holofcener also performed fairly well, while The Good Heart and Mercy failed to spark much interest. After six weeks of relatively decent numbers, City Island more than tripled its theater count this weekend, making $733,338 at 269 locations. The comedy has tallied just under $2.1 million, though based on its per theater average of $2,726 this weekend, it may have finally reached its level of saturation. Housefull pulled in $642,156 at 82 theaters for a per theater average of $7,831. This is the best start for a Bollywood movie since My Name is Khan opened to $1.9 million in February, though that movie had the strength of Fox Searchlight behind it. It's also the best opening for an...

Four years ago, on Jan. 6, 2006, Logan and Noah Miller stood over the body of their father, Daniel, in a morgue in California’s Marin County and made a promise. The twin brothers vowed that in the next 12 months they would make a movie about their dad, a longtime alcoholic who had died from a ruptured aorta on a concrete jailhouse floor the day before, at age 59. “This year,” the pair told their father, “this year.” It was a crazy promise to make. The brothers had spent the previous half decade writing screenplays in Los Angeles, including a fictionalized depiction of...

Warner Bros.' remake of "A Nightmare on Elm Street" scared up an estimated $32.2 million during the weekend to top the domestic boxoffice with frightful ease.
DreamWorks Animation's leggy 3D adventure "How to Train Your Dragon" puffed into second place with $10.8 million in its sixth frame, as the Paramount-distributed pic piled cumulative boxoffice to $192.4 million.
Elsewhere, Summit Entertainment's family comedy "Furry Vengeance" opened more meekly than expected, with just $6.5 million in fifth place. But two holdover films marked solid sophomore sessions: CBS Films' Jennifer Lopez starrer "The Back-Up Plan" rang up $7.2 million in fourth place, just 41% less than a week earlier for cume of $23 million; Warners' comics-based military actioner "The Losers" dipped 36% from its frosh frame for $6 million sixth place with an $18.1 million cume.
On an industrywide basis, the $102 million weekend marked a big 36% downtick from the comparable weekend last year. That's largely because the year-ago session was the...

What are film festivals doing in increase distribution possibilities for their filmmakers and how are they using digital technology to do this and enhance their own position at the same time?
1) Sundance Film Festival is debuting films through VOD under a label called "Sundance Selects". Three films that premiere at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival will debut simultaneously into 40 million Us households, via cable systems and satellite TV. The films will then be available for viewing for 30 days. The films include Michael Winterbottom's and Mat Whitecross's sociopolitical documentary The Shock Doctrine, Benny and Josh Safdie's comedy Daddy Longlegs, and Daniel Grou's drama 7 Days (Les 7 Jours du Talion).
"Moving the storytelling of the Sundance Film Festival beyond 10 days in Utah remains a top priority for us," said actor Robert Redford, founder of the Sundance Institute, about bringing the event to a wider audience, including selected screenings of Sundance films in other Us cities.

Whether you’re a baseball fan or not, Touching Home is a wonderful story and a great little film that’s appeared from somewhere out in left field. The film is inspired by true events, written, produced and directed by and starring the real life twin brothers Logan and Noah Miller. This pair of first-time indie filmmakers have really hit a home run with this movie that among other things, features a pretty impressive cast.
The story is about a pair of twin brothers who grew up together in a household run by their alcoholic father. Through the years, they’ve supported each other while taking care of their father who, if not working, was drinking. The brothers love baseball and play with a passion and seriousness that leads them to playing with the Colorado Rockies minor league system. When poor college grades and being cut from the roster ends...

Denver may not be a city that attracts the amount of movie industry buzz that centers around our Western neighbors of Telluride, Sundance and Austin, but we do have a solid and fervent community of film lovers here. We don't have a ton of film events, but what we do have is cherished and obsessed over enough to rival the Alamo Drafthouse.
One of these events is the Starz Denver Film Festival, which is going strong in its 32nd year. After partnering with Starz, over the years, we've played host to Crispin Glover, Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy, Will Smith, Ang Lee, and enjoyed every on-the-cusp-of-Oscar movie of the past three seasons. This year is no exception as the festival kicks off this week with Precious, which was produced by the Denver-based Sarah Siegel Magness and Gary Magness. The only big film festival in my own backyard is back and it runs from November 12th through the 22nd. While it caters more to heavy run fest material and arthouse film, they do have some of the more interesting films playing this year:
Ryan Ward's excellent Son of the Sunshine which is one of my favorite films of the year. (review)
The weird, lengthy comedy The Revenant (review)
Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans
The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus
and much more. Program after the break!

Children of Invention
Two first-generation Chinese kids in suburban Boston find themselves on their own after their desperate mother is unwittingly involved in a pyramid scheme and arrested. Older brother Raymond takes a page from her marketing seminars to start creating a life for himself and his sister - casting a strange, pint-sized reflection on the American Dream.

Lrff organizers say attendance numbers have more than doubled over last year's festival. Part of the reason has to be the high quality of films screening. Here are some of my favorites.
Daryl Wein (Breaking Upwards) & Logan Miller (Touching Home) at Lrff Picnic
Touching HomeThink about this scenario: You've never written a screenplay. You've never directed a film. You've never acted in a film. Heck, you've never even been a grip. Try taking that resume and making a film with it, starring veteran actor Ed Harris. That is exactly what co-directors Logan and Noah Miller have done with Touching Home. Based on the true story of the Miller Brothers' relationship with their alcoholic father (played by Harris) the twin brothers play themselves and are surprisingly good. Filmed at and around their home in Marin County, north of San Francisco, the story focuses on the boys' attempts to become professional baseball...

Chicago – The second wave of catalog titles from Paramount Home Video hits this week, just in time for buyers to put their gift cards to use. HollywoodChicago.com covered the first wave, including “Into the Wild” and “Old School,” a few weeks ago.
Check out the details about those releases here. This wave includes “Days of Thunder,” “Ghost,” “Last Holiday,” “Event Horizon,” and “The Truman Show”.
What do these five titles have in common? Nothing but the studio that produced them and the release date that they land on Blu-Ray, December 30th, 2008. Action, romance, comedy, horror/sci-fi, and drama - it’s a variety of genres with at least one of the titles likely to be of interest to someone with a holiday return or an unused gift card. All films are presented in 1080p High-Definition Widescreen and feature English 5.1 Dolby True HD audio tracks.
