The backdrop to American Horror Story season 6, our Us chums look at the lost colony of Roanoke, its myths and pop culture appearances...
In case you missed it, the American Horror Story season 6 theme has been revealed, and it is a bloody Roanoke Nightmare indeed. After promoting the new season without releasing a single frame of footage, the ever-cryptic Ryan Murphy has now unveiled his true crime satire-meets-American Gothic to a surprised public, leading many to wonder… what is Roanoke again?
Despite a misconception in some quarters that the name infamously tied to the words “Lost Colony” was made up for the series, and that this fictional ghost story was set in Virginia (Roanoke is in present day North Carolina), Roanoke is indeed a real place, and the ghost stories around it are every bit as strange—if not stranger—than anything American Horror Story has dreamed up.

Haven managed something fairly rare in the world of television simply by being a show that was, more or less, serious about about completely goofball events without turning ridiculous.
It probably helped that it got to say Stephen King’s name a lot, but no outside pull gets you very far when you have to put “The Troubles” on screen, and sell a world in which a small town in Maine goes loopy. That’s especially true when you have episodic “troubles” to fix, and have to maintain the long arc’s direction.
The show held its own by way of the onscreen chemistry of the three main stars, and the charm of the supporting actors.
Now the final season is headed your way, and it’s not only something that is worth the price of admission just on the twists and revelations of the season itself, it’s also loaded with special features.

Syfy’s Haven telly show has just snapped up Captain Kirk himself, Mr William Shatner...
TV drama Haven, based on Steven King’s The Colorado Kid, has been running since 2010. Now, they’ve added William Shatner to the mix in a piece of enterprising casting.
He’ll play a ‘pivotal character that has the potential to forever impact the fate of the town of Haven and its troubled residents,’ we’re told.
Mr Shatner will hang around for four episodes, with an arc all of his own, acting as the bridge between them.
Haven season five is screening right now around the world, but Shatner will beam into proceedings after the mid-season break, at some point next year.
The show, if you’re not familiar focuses on an FBI special agent in a small town which becomes weirder and weirder the longer she stays there. It’s unclear if she...

“Sometimes being alive feels like a long game of chicken on a badly-lit road.” -- Michael Marshall Smith, from the introduction to Ps Publishing's Christine Love for Stephen King’s 1983 haunted car story has always seemed a little light on the ground. It’s not that anyone ever hated Christine; it’s just that the passion with which readers discussed classic novels like The Stand or The Shining or recent books like Bag of Bones or 11/22/63 seemed to pass Christine by. During King’s most popular decade, the novel failed to hit #1 on the New York Times bestseller list (though #2 isn’t exactly a struggle for chart success.) Literary critic and King expert Dr. Michael R. Collings once referred to Christine as a “minor” novel, especially in comparison to the major statement of Pet Sematary, also released that year. Yet in the thirty-plus years since the book was published, Christine has become a cultural touchstone.

"Haven" hasn't seen the Colorado Kid, aka James Cogan, since he disappeared with the barn in the Season 3 finale. But the young man is far from forgotten on the show and many have wondered if he might return.
Guess what? Steve Lund, the actor who played James on "Haven," wonders the same thing. When Zap2it talked to Lund about his new show, "Bitten," recently, he dropped a few hints about whether or not the Colorado Kid might ever return.
Alas, the answer is a solid maybe. It is not, however, for lack of interest or trying on Lund's part. "I've been trying with all of my might to get back on 'Haven.' I know there are some people that want to see the Colorado Kid back on the show," Lund explains in the interview. "[Executive producer] Shawn Piller came a couple of times to visit our set when he was in Toronto.

You’ve got to love a show that gets stronger over time… or at least gets higher ratings, and since that’s exactly the case with Syfy‘s Haven, fans can relax for quite a while. The network has ordered 26 new episodes, and they will air as a split fifth season. 13 will air in the fall, and the remaining 13 will air sometime in 2015.

2013 was a stellar year for horror fiction, and while these five titles made the cut for this column I could have easily added a dozen more. There are familiar names here, and a couple of newcomers I hope you’ll seek out. If you’re so inclined, I’d love to hear what your favorite reads of the year were – feel free to share them in the comments below.
The Bones of You by Gary McMahon
I’m a sucker for “quiet” horror, the kind of stuff that relies heavily on atmosphere and suggestion to conjure up its scares. There are no shortcuts to making fiction of this sort work; if a writer doesn’t have the particular skill set for this kind of storytelling, you’ll know it in the first few pages. McMahon proves he’s up for the challenge in this devastating novella about a haunted man...

Most mainstream readers had been waiting a long time for the two books coming out in 2013. Early the year before, news leaked that publisher Hard Case Crime would release a new book called Joyland as a paperback original, just in time for summer. Anticipation was cautiously high; reviews of King’s last book with the publisher, 2005’s The Colorado Kid, were mixed. Readers seemed far more eager for a book King announced way back in 2009; Doctor Sleep, King’s long-gestating sequel to 1977’s The Shining, was due to arrive in late fall. But beyond these splashy new novels, King was as busy as usual, writing and publishing at a frantic (some might say lunatic) pace. King launched the year doing something that was becoming a trend: unearthing long-buried work from the past and bringing it into the light. “The Glass Floor” first appeared in the sixth issue of Robert A.

Season 4 of Haven has fractured the world we know it as our beloved hero Audrey Parker (Emily Rose) is living her life as Lexie Dewitt, completely unaware of her prior lives as Audrey, Lucy and Sarah. Perhaps just in the nick of time, a mysterious newcomer William (Colin Ferguson) finds Lexie and tries to tell her about her other identities and life in Haven. But just what is the relationship between William and Lexie or her former self, that is a huge mystery. In a recent press conference call, star Emily Rose and guest-star Colin Ferguson shed some light on who Lexie and William are and what their future looks like.
What role does William play for both of you? Are we going to learn about his past? Is it going to be revealed anytime soon?
Colin: We are going to find that history about who William is and what their relationship was.

William is something of an enigma on "Haven" Season 4.
The man -- played by Colin Ferguson of "Eureka" fame -- showed up in the season premiere, "Fallout," and promptly established himself as a full-on mystery. He knows all about Audrey/Lexie (Emily Rose). There are people following him around with guns. William can take out those people with a pool cue.
Also, Lexie thinks he's cute. So who is this William guy?
What's his name?
If you paid very close attention to William's introduction to Lexie in the bar, you may have noticed a slight hesitation when he was asked his name. It was almost as if "William" had to think about an answer before he said it.
Now why would William -- a person Lexie had never seen before and didn't know at all -- need to give a fake name? The fake isn't for her in the moment,...

Based on the Stephen King novella “The Colorado Kid,” Haven is a series exploring the darker side of a small town infested with supernatural problems. Past seasons have introduced average everyday people with very unique abilities — for many these abilities are more trouble than a blessing. Thus, they are known as “troubled.” Every 27 years or so, the “troubles” seem to return to plague Haven and all within its borders. Not everyone is cursed, but all who reside there have felt the presence of the “troubles” and everyone looks forward to the day when they disappear again. As was revealed in Season 3, Audrey Parker is the key to getting rid of the “troubles” and giving the afflicted relief — it’s Audrey’s capacity to love that provides a protective loving blanket over Haven for a time, until she must return to recharge on the love she finds there.
Alas, this did not bode well for everyone.

Any avid television fan knows that the holder of a TV show’s secrets are the producers and writers. So it was quite a coup to get a few minutes to speak with executive producer Shawn Piller about what adventures and mysteries Haven Season 4 offers. True to form, there were a lot of hints, but not really any spoilers as Shawn truly believes that fans love to be surprised.
When asked about what the big mystery of Season 4 may be, Shawn explained that prior season mysteries focused on the search for identity and self-discovery. In fact, Haven’s heroine Audrey Parker (Emily Rose) is a constant state of discovering who she used to be. She has lived many lives before and this season, the show will explore how those past lives will start to inform Audrey as to who she is in the present. It is the age-old question of:...

Haven may have started out as a supernatural television series based on the Stephen King novella “The Colorado Kid,” but within the three seasons that it has aired on Syfy, it has become so much more. It introduced viewers and fans to its heroine Audrey Parker (Emily Rose) and the mystery of who Audrey really is. Each episode offered another layer to the curious case of Audrey Parker and the women who she may have been in her other lives: Sarah, Lucy and now Lexie. Teased by the mysteries and the “troubles” woven into the Haven tapestry of stories, the show captured viewers’ attention and hearts. It was a delightfully slow seduction and one which fans are delighted to be enthralled by.

Fans of the Syfy supernatural drama won’t have to wait until Haven returns for a fourth season on September 13 to learn what happened right after the explosive Season 3 finale. The Season 3 DVD set of the series will include an exclusive Haven: After The Storm mini-graphic novel. With 100,000 copies printed, the 16-page comic details the immediate aftershock of the meteor-falling season ender on the mysterious town of Haven, Maine. Among other things, that finale saw FBI agent-turned-local cop Audrey Parker (Emily Rose) and the Duke Crocker (Eric Balfour) character disappear into a vanishing barn. The DVD set comes out on September 3, and the graphic novel won’t be available anywhere else. The “Thanks For The Memories” episode of the eOne- and Big Motion Pictures-produced series, based on Stephen King’s 2005 novella The Colorado Kid, aired on January 17. The upcoming Season 4 of Haven actually picks up six months after the events of Season 3 finale,...

In 2011, I wrote a short little book called Chart of Darkness, which traced Stephen King’s career by delving into his long and record-breaking career on the New York Times Bestseller Lists. It was a fascinating book to research and write, in part because it’s a way to quantify popularity, and in part because charts, especially ones involving pop culture, are just kind of fun. King first made a splash on the paperback chart in 1976 when ’Salem’s Lot, his second novel, hit #1. In an article titled “Not Guilty,” published October 24, 1976 in the New York Times, King defends his right to having the #1 bestselling paperback in the country, arguing that popularity does not necessarily equal the lowest common denominator. “Accessibility,” he states, “cannot stand alone… the honest intent to do as well as possible — that has to stand at the base of any writing career.”

Haven Season 4 is coming to wrap itself around us in all its creepy mysterious gorgeous Nova Scotia-posing-as-New England goodness, and I am So Ready. They’ve even made it easy to remember the premiere date: Friday the 13th of next month.
I’m thrilled that Colin Ferguson (Eureka) is joining as a recurring guest star, and now we have news of two others. I hope they all fare better than last year’s recurring guest star. You know, the psychologist? Yowie.
With so many shows, new characters can be disruptive, but the casting in this series has always been impeccable, and seamless with the writing and the collective excellence of the show. And no matter how hard they try, and sometimes they do try, guest stars seem to never be able to permanently break up my favorite love/buddy triangle of Audrey, Nathan, and Duke.

Editor's note: Earlier this week, we reviewed CBS's Under the Dome, a 13-episode "event series" based on the book of the same name by Stephen King. That first review focused on Under the Dome as a stand-alone TV entity. The following review centers on how the series was adapted from the book, and how fans of the book will likely react to the series.
Under the Dome is the fifth TV series based on something written by Stephen King. This number doesn’t include the many miniseries, only programs that aren’t designed to have a fixed number of episodes. Thus far, the track record is two successes and two that were canceled during their first seasons. The canceled series weren’t based on King books. The Golden Years—recently reissued on DVD—was an original story and Kingdom Hospital was a remake of a Danish series. On the other hand,...

There’s a certain flavor to Stephen King’s 1970s novels that goes deeper than theme and tone and even feel, especially in the smaller, more personal stories like The Shining and ’Salem’s Lot and The Dead Zone. The books are certainly “of their time,” but it’s more than that: it’s a distinct spirit that’s difficult to pin down and even harder to describe. These books – as well as the Bachman novel Blaze, a relic from those early days – come from such a distinct time, place, and mindset in King’s career that the stories can’t help but reflect who and where their author was when they were written. Cheese aficionados and wine connoisseurs call this elusive essence terroir. At this late date, decades after those classic novels were published, it would be almost impossible to capture that exact flavor again, in a new novel...
