- When Rodney uses an Ancient device, he gets special powers, but soon Dr Weir discovers it's a double-handled gift: if he doesn't ascend, he'll die.
- After a time when the Ancients have been shortly living in Atlantis, they have activated a whole bunch of equipment and devices. The Atlantis researchers team is walking around the city to shut it all down again. Suddenly they discover an old research terminal and McKay is going to try to shut it down. Although that does not quite happen like it should.—Mark Ernst
- Rodney McKay is scouring the city to find ways to reduce power consumption to preserve their lone ZPM for as long as possible. In one room they find a device that zaps McKay before he can switch it off. The result is a super-intelligent and powerful McKay, whose ego needed no encouraging to begin with. No only is his intellectual capacity heightened, but he can read people's minds and even manages to heal Zelenka's wounds just by touching him. It's not all good news when Elizabeth Weir's research reveals that the device was meant for Atlanteans to use in advance of their ascension - and more importantly that if Rodney doesn't ascend, he will die.—garykmcd
- As the scientist explore more cleared Ancient facilities in Atlantis, some having been reactivated by the short Ancient rule, intending to shut down most to reduce power consumption, Rodney is exposed to unexpected radiation, initially ignored, which soon is found to render him superpowers, resulting from DNA manipulation. While his peeking intelligence, strength trumping Ronon, telekinesis, healing power and mind-reading impress even Becket, Weir reads up it's all part of the preparation for ascension as a spiritual being, which can't be reversed, and past 96% must either succeed or kill him. Despite unpromising efforts to learn to ascend, coached by 'experienced' Sheppard, Rodney expects that will fail and prefers to work like mad on his scientific legacy, yet -also part of readiness for ascension- tries to make up with all colleagues he often vexed. As his medical condition deteriorates, he agrees there's nothing to lose with betting on ascension, coming up with a last minute move.—KGF Vissers
