Calvin is a high school age star basketball player who has grown up in poverty and is being pestered by all the college pitch men to sign a letter of intent. His mother asks Frank to help him choose a college that will ensure that he gets a good education. Calvin reads at an 8th grade level. His coach has been ensuring that he passes each grade without meeting the requirements, and his coach wants him to go to River State which is already on probation for corrupt recruitment practices. Calvin winds up making his own mind up and choosing Braddock College in Mississippi because of a recruiter from Brooklyn who is passionate about basketball but also compassionate about Calvins mothers poverty.
