- While waiting for Roger to arrive at The Blue Whale, Burke flirts with Caroyln, much to Joe's chagrin. Meanwhile, Elizabeth becomes convinced that Burke was responsible for Roger's car accident.
- Vicki and Liz receive word that Roger was not seriously injured in the car accident. Liz wonders if it really was an "accident." Matthew tells her the brakes were working perfectly two days ago. At the Blue Whale, Burke is still waiting for Roger, and Carolyn continues to show an interest in Burke. Joe storms out; Burke convinces Carolyn that they should go after him.—L. Hamre
- Vicki is alone in the drawing room when the phone rings. It is Bill Malloy, calling to report on Roger's condition after the accident. After she hangs up, Elizabeth rushes into the room and Vicki assures her that Roger is going to be all right. Vicki tells her Roger has a few bruises and a cut on his forehead, and Elizabeth makes the observation she isn't sure what happened was an accident. She believes Burke Devlin may have had something to do with it. Vicki tells her Malloy is certain the car's brakes failed and that he left Roger in the care of Dr. Reeves. Vicki tries to reassure Elizabeth that Roger is fine, but Elizabeth is concerned that Burke may try again. Vicki can't believe that Burke would try to kill Roger, but Elizabeth points that a man filled with years of bitterness and hatred is capable of anything. Vicki reminds her that Carolyn said Burke was a nice man but Elizabeth insists it's all an act. Roger calls to reassure everyone that he's fine, but Elizabeth is still concerned because Roger has driven the road into town hundreds of time and knows every twist and turn by heart. She says nothing has ever happened to Roger on that road until Burke Devlin invited him to town.
At the Blue Whale, Burke is keeping Carolyn entertained, much to Joe's displeasure. Joe reminds Burke that he said he was meeting someone. Burke says he's waiting for Roger, who seems to be running late, but thanks to Carolyn he doesn't mind a bit. Joe leaves to make a phone call and Burke begins to charm Carolyn more. He starts by pointing out what a good guy Joe is, but Carolyn says Joe's the type of man who will live his entire life in Collinsport. Burke says there's nothing wrong with that, but Carolyn points out Burke left years ago and he tells her he didn't have any choice. When Carolyn asks why, Burke tells her to ask her uncle.
Burke begins to wonder where Roger could be, and Carolyn accuses hm of being tired of her. Burke assures her he would leave if that were true, and she tells him he's different from everyone she knows because he lives life the way he want -- no chains, no rules -- just knows what he wants and works for it. Burke tells her Joe is the same way with working for the fishing boat and courting Carolyn. Carolyn says Burke actively pursues what he wants and drags it away if he wants to, and he asks if she wants to be dragged away from Collinwood. Joe returns to the table to tell Carolyn they can still catch the last showing of the movie. Joe can't understand why Carolyn is showing so little interest in their plans. Burke goes to play the jukebox, and Joe asks what she sees in him. Carolyn says nothing, but Burke is watching them carefully from the jukebox.
At Collinwood, Elizabeth calls Matthew and asks him to meet her in the kitchen. Vicki comes into the kitchen and Elizabeth tells her that Matthew was almost killed 17 years before when the brakes failed at the same spot as Roger's crash. Since then, Matthew has always made sure the brakes were working properly on every car they owned. Vicki lets her know David is asleep, and Elizabeth reflects that bringing him into the house was probably the worst thing she could have done -- that the house is old and decaying, not meant for young people. Vicki assures her Carolyn turned out just fine. Elizabeth says if anything bad happened to Carolyn, she would just give up her strength and die.
Vicki is laying out tea when Matthew arrives. He wants to know why he was summoned to the house so late at night, and Vicki tells him Elizabeth will tell him when she comes back from upstairs. Elizabeth comes into the kitchen and asks Matthew when the last time was he checked Roger's car. Thinking that Roger has been complaining about his work Matthew gets angry and admits he doesn't like Roger, which raises Elizabeth's suspicions. She asks if Matthew would harm Roger, and he says he would if he did anything to hurt her. He asks why she wants to know and Elizabeth tells him about the accident. Matthew tells her he checked the brakes just two days before and they were working perfectly, that if they failed it has to be because someone was tampering with them.
At the Blue Whale, Joe and Carolyn are dancing and arguing. When the music ends they go to the table where Burke is still waiting. Carolyn asks him to dance, but Burke says he's too old and besides Joe punched her last dance partner. Joe smiles and says he might do it again, then tells her it's time to leave for the movie. Carolyn won't leave if Burke is staying. Burke says he's tired of waiting and is going to walk back to the hotel, and Carolyn invites him to come to the movie with them. Joe loses his temper, tells Carolyn if she's so worried about Burke she should go back to the hotel with him and storms out. Burke tells Carolyn to put on her coat so they can go look for Joe. She doesn't want to, but he insists.
At Collinwood, Elizabeth gets a call from the press wanting a quote, but she tells them to call back tomorrow. Matthew has gone to check out the car and says it's all crushed in and it's a miracle Roger wasn't killed. He wasn't able to inspect the brakes because there was a news photographer there and he didn't want to have to answer any questions. Elizabeth tells Vicki and Matthew not to tell anyone about their suspicions the brakes were tampered with until she can talk to Roger. Matthew goes to get more wood for the fire, and Vicki comments if it had been Elizabeth in the car, the fiercely loyal handyman would have gone straight to Burke's hotel room and killed him. Another reporter calls, and Vicki marvels at how one car accident could be such a big story. Elizabeth tells her the Collins family is the big story, and asks what movie Carolyn was going to see so they can try to contact her. Vicki reluctantly tells her Carolyn changed Joe's plans and they went to the Blue Whale. Elizabeth is upset by the news since she had made Joe and Carolyn promise not to go there again. She becomes even more distraught when Vicki tells her it might have been because Burke was there. Vicki says she didn't say anything sooner because she didn't think it was that important. Elizabeth tells her Carolyn is a confused girl and could be easily hurt. Vicki doesn't understand why Burke would try to hurt her, and Elizabeth says the only difference between Carolyn and the accident is the car can be repaired.
Elizabeth calls the Blue Whale and is told Carolyn left with Burke.
