I don’t see how news gets much better than this. John Noble, who played the beloved Walter in Fringe, as well as countless excellent portrayals of a wide range of characters over the years, not the least of which was the mad Denethor in the Lord of the Rings films, has been cast in a recurring role in my favorite new series of the season, Roberto Orci‘s and Alex Kurtzman‘s Sleepy Hollow.

The British Horror Film Festival, now in its second year, took place in London and Bournemouth over October 14th and 15th 2011, boasting a line-up of new home-grown genre fare. As well as the three films covered below, the festival opened with the premier of vampire thriller “The Reverend”, directed by Neil Jones (best known for boxing bio “Risen”) and starring Rutger Hauer, Tamer Hassan and Pinhead himself, Doug Bradley, and also included horror comedy “Kill Keith” and a showcase of short films. The Holding “The Holding” might seem somewhat of an odd choice for a festival designed around showing off genre talent, given that it’s not really a horror film at all, but a tightly wound rural suspense thriller with a few touches of murder and madness thrown in. Marking the feature debut of director Susan Jacobson, the film stars Kierston Wareing (recently in “Fish Tank” and “Basement”) as its chief woman in peril,...

Biopic of featherweight boxing world champion Howard Winstone.
Although boxing biopic Risen wears its heart on its sleeve, a trait that may strike some as earnestness, it does not have a lack of ambition.
An affectionate portrayal of featherweight world champion Howard Winstone (Stuart Brennan), we follow his career from his days fighting in his homeland of the Welsh valleys through to his attempts to secure the world featherweight championship. Guest Review by Dog Ate My Wookie
Stars: Erik Morales, John Noble, Stewart Brennan | Written by Neil Jones, Stuart Brennan | Directed by Neil Jones
Risen, the true story of boxing legend ‘The Welsh Wizard’ Howard Winstone is one of only three movies to be supported official by the World Boxing Council, rubbing shoulders with the likes of The Hurricane and Million Dollar Baby. Sadly despite this support, Risen never hits the heights of the aforementioned greats, lagging quite a bit behind infact.
The film follows the story of Howard Winstone, played by Stuart Brennan; one of amateur boxing’s most promising rising talents before an industrial accident left him with three missing fingers on his acclaimed knockout right hand. His amateur career is only briefly shown, as is his accident, with the film focussing on his recovery and push against adversity to make it as a professional boxer.

Howard Winstone (Stuart Brennan) grew up in the quiet Welsh town of Merthyr Tydfil, suffering a horrific injury in his late teens that cost him most of the digits on his right hand and looked likely to put paid to his aspirations to be a professional boxer. But he met Eddie Thomas (John Noble) who trained him and encouraged him, until he eventually fought for the Wbc world featherweight title.
*****
I confess to having known nothing of Howard Winstone before sitting down to watch Risen, though it certainly is a compelling story. He suffered one of those “comes out of nowhere” industrial accidents that should have rendered a professional boxing career impossible, so painful would hitting an opponent with nothing but stumps for fingers have been, yet box he did and exceedingly well. His professional record of 61 wins from 67 bouts is impressive enough, without taking account of the fact that...

(Joe Cornish, 2011, UK) John Boyega, Nick Frost, Jodie Whittaker. 88 mins
More Critters than Cloverfield, this alien-invasion movie is modest in scale and ambition but makes up for it in local flavour. The setting is south London – Brit cinema's default "ghetto" location, bruv – where sharp-toothed ETs come to regret messing with the hoodies, who team up with their recent victim and the upstairs drug dealer to defend their manor. It's no Shaun Of The Dead, but it's up-to-date and fitfully entertaining, and there's at least some social grit beneath the down-with-the-kids comedy.
A Screaming Man (PG)
(Mahamat-Saleh Haroun, 2010, Cha/Fra/Bel) Youssouf Djaoro, Dioucounda Koma, Emile Abssolo M'Bo. 91 mins
Saying a great deal with few resources, this skillful Chadian drama finds weighty moral, global and generational concerns in the story of a swimming pool attendant and his son.
Love Like Poison (15)
(Katell Quillévéré, 2010, Fra) Clara Augarde, Lio, Stefano Cassetti.

It's awesome to see Rutger Hauer getting so much work lately. To say that his presence has been missed from the screen over the last several years is a bit of an understatement. Thankfully the man is back and is as badass as ever!
