- Flavia Gemina makes friends with her next-door neighbor, Jonathan Ben-Mordecai, and makes another new friend when she convinces her father to buy a young African girl, Nubia, from a cruel slave dealer. When her father leaves on another sea voyage, he sends Flavia and her new friends to her uncle's farm near Pompeii to be out of harm's way. En route, the children make the acquaintance of Pliny the Elder, the famous Roman admiral and natural historian, and a mute boy named Lupus, who saves Pliny from drowning. The four new friends decide to look into the recent disappearances of young children in the area, but the countryside is thrown into chaos by strange happenings, all of them foreshadowing the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius.
