This episode is one of only four in the eight "complete season" DVD sets that do not have a laugh track. All four occur in the Fall of season 4.
This marks the first episode in which Barney is referred to as "Bernard P. Fife." In Season 1, Episode 25, "A Plaque for Mayberry," Andy says Barney's middle name is "Oliver." In Season 3, Episode 19, "Class Reunion," Barney's middle name is "Milton."
This episode originally aired four days before President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas on November 22nd, 1963.
Once again, the last name "Beasley" is used. Andy mentions that he should send a copy of Opie's report card to Edgar Beasley. Other Beasleys include Juanita Beasley at the diner, Goober Beasley (before he was Pyle), Lorraine Beasley in "A Wife For Andy," Virginia Beasley and Andrew Beasley, as mentioned by Floyd in "The Case of The Punch in The Nose."
Opie runs away and finally tells Andy that he was leaving to join the Navy. Years later, Ron Howard left the series "Happy Days" by having his character, Richie Cunningham, join the Navy. Still years later, Jim Carrey, as "The Grinch," does a parody of Ron Howard wearing a navy ball cap as Ron Howard was also known to do.
