- Kirk and Spock accept a secret mission (the mission is put together by the Vedala, the oldest space faring race in the Federation) to a mad planet where they'll search, as two in a six-member team of specialists (The other 4 include Tchar (Master of the Eerie, Prince of Skorr), Sord (his people are cautious and Sord was sentenced to this expedition), Em/3/green (expert locksmith and thief), Lara (hunter with a flawless directional sense)), for a stolen relic. Spock was chosen for his analytic mind and scientific expertise. Kirk for his leadership and adaptability.
The Skorr were warriors (2 centuries ago they had advanced military technology and could breed vast armies rapidly) who converted to a peaceful race due to their religious leader Alar. Alar's sermons (his brain waves) were recorded and stored as an Indurite sculpture. but they were stolen and now the racial fury in the Skorr is making them prepare for war against the known Galaxy. Spock says Skorr have the tech to breed 200 billion warriors in 2 yrs. The theft has been kept secret for now from the Skorr population. It is not clear who took the relic, but the motive is to provoke a holy war.
The relic has been traced to the mad planet, which is geologically unstable, earthquakes, tidal waves, and temps ranging from 20 Kelvin to 204 C above. Three previous expeditions have tried, failed and become lost, but if the relic isn't recovered before its people discover its absence, a holy war (jihad) will sweep the galaxy.
The group is transported to the planet and use their collective abilities to locate the relic. Lara navigates, Em/3/Green rewires the power packs in their ride to make it go faster, Tchar rigs a barricaded diversion to keep them safe from the constant lava flows from eruptions. The groups escapes the lava to move into an ice age. From ice age into a forest, where Sord thinks he saw something moving. The group gradually gets closer to the relic. Spock is intrigued as the Vedala told them that there were no living beings on the planet.
The party reaches a temple inside which the relic is hidden. Em/3/green picks the lock to the temple (they are on a timed trigger and if Em/3/green doesn't get them all opened in time, they will explode) and they are able to get inside. they are attacked by mechanized sentinels, who are disposed off by phasers. Tchar is carried away by one such mechanical sentinel. The temple doors close once the group enters. Kirk suspects a traitor in their midst as all 3 previous expeditions were lost. As the group is about to touch the relic, they are attacked from the air and Kirk calls out Tchar as their attacker and the traitor. Tchar stole the relic in the first place. Tchar is a prince and wants to reclaim the lost glory of his race (he says the Skorr were a warrior race and are now slaves to the illusion of peace). Kirk and Spock capture Tchar and transport back to Vedala. The Vedala request each to keep the mission a secret and send them back with their thanks.
