It’s a powerful plea against the death penalty, but also an Oscar bid for a fiery actress. And don’t forget the cool jazz music score. On top of this Robert Wise adds a formerly- taboo sequence, a realistic depiction of an execution in the gas chamber. Of such things were gritty, hard-hitting reputations made.

Jack Ketchum and Edward Lee are both masters of the erotic grotesque. Lee tends to go for the gut, figuratively and literally. His plainspoken approaches to sexual and body horror result in novellas like “The Pig,” which delves – deep – into the world of snuff porn, junkies, and bestiality. (Its sequel, “The House,” pulls some punches … but not many.) If you’re into the grossest of gross-out splatterpunk, Lee’s your man.
Walking the same forest but ending up in a different clearing is Jack Ketchum. His infamous The Girl Next Door is hard to read and impossible to put down, the epitome of sex terror that unnerves rather than grosses out. His recent work with Lucky McKee, I’m Not Sam, starts sane and grows unbelievably uncomfortable, the sexuality at its center is less vividly awful than that in The Girl Next Door, but arguably more repulsive.
Sometimes these guys write stories together.

It’s Monday night…you know what that means. Time for the Internet to weigh in on Ashton Kutcher’s fourth go-round on Two and a Half Men. Many deride it, but it’s quickly becoming the little big show that could. While there was a drop off from the previous week, over 17 million viewers (!) tuned in last Monday. The numbers don’t lie. For whatever reason — Love of the show? Shirtless Kutcher? Morbid curiosity? — people are still watching.
This week’s episode centered on the continuing romantic woes of Kutcher’s helpless billionaire character, Walden. I think my favorite...

NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt has just announced full season orders to new comedies “Up All Night” and “Whitney.”
“We made comedy an important goal for us this season and I’m very pleased to be making full-season commitments to both ‘Whitney’ and ‘Up All Night,’” said Greenblatt. “We’re thrilled with the creative direction of both shows as well as the potential for them to continue to build loyal audiences over the coming months.”
The network’s full-season pick-up of “Whitney” comes as a major surprise to… well, anyone who has suffered through an episode. Morbid curiosity gave it a 3.3 rating on its first night, but audiences abandoned the comedy by its second airing, which drew a 2.5 (down 24%).
The show, which stars foul-mouthed comedienne Whitney Cummings, was an odd choice for NBC’s Thursday night comedy block from the beginning. Its multi-camera format (complete with a trying-too-hard laugh track) is...

Hurry up and choose your side, True Blood fans. Practically everyone else did on "Spellbound," as storylines continued to converge while, ironically, friends were torn apart.
Can Tara and Sookie ever come back from being on opposing teams in the Battle at Bon Temps Cemetery? Because this is a TV show, the answer is likely yes. But I'd never forgive my Bff if she ever set out to destroy my true loves. Gotta put my foot down somewhere, preferably across Antonia's throat.
Clearly, I'm on Team Vampire here, but I've said it from the introduction of Marnie: it's refreshing to have an enemy viewers can fully understand. I'd likely want to murder all blood suckers, too, if I were Antonia. Same for Tara. Consider all she's been through.
In my ideal conclusion to this season, Sookie actually kills Tara while defending Bill and Eric. The series will never go there,...

Writer/director/actor Dave Reda has made a name for himself over the last few years with his indie genre projects including Bit Parts and his most recent effort, Horror of Our Love (which screened recently as part of the Los Angeles Comedy Festival).
We recently caught up with Reda (of Elfwtin Fillms) to find out what his top five indie genre projects are. Check them out below!
1. Hate* (*A Comedy) (Drew Daywalt and David Schneider)
This is one of my most favorite short films... A deadly vengeful speaking chicken and poison chimichangas?? This one is so well made and a total blast. Drew also is the director of the insane short film Polydeus, which is a crazy film centered around an 80's video game. The make-up on the creature is fantastic, too.
2. Death In Charge (Devi Snively)
This is such a cool short film, very well made, and an unusual Grim Reaper.

The horror “scene” in Massachusetts feels pretty desolate these days, especially in the winter season when the real horror is finding used condoms underneath the piles of black snow. Occasionally we get recognized when Rock & Shock comes to Worcester in the fall, and there are of course the monthly screenings in Somerville thanks to Chris Hallock and Mike Snoonian of All Things Horror. But how can we get Boston more involved with the horror scene? Creator of the Stiletto Film Fest, Megan Sacco (aka Lady Haunter) may have a few answers.
On February 27th the Stiletto Film Fest made its debut in Clinton Massachusetts. A horror film festival that featured short and feature length films done by women—a perfect way to seal the end of Women in Horror Month. Sacco who crossed over to the horror world after being in the Haunt industry for 15 years, decided that Massachusetts needed...

Saw 3D Directed by: Kevin Greutert Written by: Patrick Melton, Marcus Dunstan Starring: Tobin Bell, Costas Mandylor, Betsy Russell How many Saws does that make now? Evidently, even its creators have stopped counting. Saw 3D is only the second film in the annual horror franchise I’ve seen (the first being the first), and this alleged “final chapter” assumes working knowledge of Jigsaw canon. My critique, however, is of Saw 3D as a stand-alone film, though my gut reaction undoubtedly echoes what you already know — this is a ‘fans only’ affair. The story of Saw fandom is one of diminishing returns. After being decimated at the box office this Halloween and last by the low-budget Paranormal Activity films, the series is struggling to stay relevant, or at least to sell tickets on shock-value alone. Saw has long since passed that threshold, and the obvious draw this year is the incorporation of 3D.

Morbid Curiosity was an underground magazine that published first-person, true narratives of bizarre interests, odd trips, and supernatural experiences, among other strange and morbid things. The magazine was disbanded in 2006. In 2009, Editor Loren Rhoads compiled a book of all the best stories.
This a bizarre book. It’s not particularly interesting all the way through. In fact, the first half reads quite a bit like a freshman college composition class textbook. You don’t really want to read it, but you do, because you’re hoping something catches your attention. Some of the stories are interesting, and some make you wonder what was so morbid or curious or even applicable to the theme that got them in the magazine,...

Sinatra Was Buried With Bourbon, Cigarettes & Candy
Frank Sinatra was buried with a bottle of bourbon, a pack of cigarettes, a lighter and a roll of dimes so he could call his loved ones from beyond the grave, according to a new book.
The singer's casket was filled with items his family members felt sure Ol' Blue Eyes would like to take with him and Alan W. Petrucelli's new tome, Morbid Curiosity, The Disturbing Demises of the Famous and Infamous, lists them.
According to the author, Sinatra's coffin was also filled with Tootsie Rolls, his favourite candy, a dog biscuit, so he could feed the dogs in heaven, and a roll of cherry Life Savers.
Sinatra died of a heart attack in 1998 and was buried at Desert Memorial Park in Cathedral City, California.
