Big Jim's club, Club Cartoni, is loosely based on an actual club in the South Loop called Tommy Gun's Garage. A majority of the cast are involved in the stage show. A brief clip of Tommy Guns can be seen during the opening title sequence just before the title credit "Directed by" appears on screen.
The original song "Dressin' up for Baby" was written by producer John Stemberg, and is performed by Angelynn Schoofs who plays Billie in the movie.
