There’s “Interstellar” and the David Lynch version of “Dune,” as well as “But I’m a Cheerleader” starring two of the biggest television leads at the moment, Natasha Lyonne and Melanie Lynskey. Viewers can also find musical films like “The Wiz” and “Dreamgirls” and dramas like “The Eternal Daughter” and “C’mon C’mon.” Horror titles include “28 Weeks Later,” for those trying to catch up on the zombie trilogy before this year’s “28 Years Later,” and “Barbarian.”

Sci-fi is not just about aliens and spaceships; it is about what science can do to address the current problems of the world, and whether it will solve those issues or worsen them. There is a reason speculative fiction like that always stands apart.

While ‘80s films like Blade Runner and Terminator wondered about the future of humanity, Hollywood seemed to pivot to a more blockbuster-y treatment for these films. The box office recovery at Imax continued during the first quarter amid a record-breaking box office performance in China and a strong slate of “Filmed for Imax” titles released into theaters, including Captain America: Brave New World and Ryan Coogler’s Sinners opening strongly last weekend.

Overall revenue at the cinema technologies company came to $86.7 million, up 10 percent from a year-earlier $79.1 million. That beat a Wall Street analyst projection of Imax posting Q1 revenues at $84.23 million.

Imax posted net income at $8.2 million, up 52 percent from a year-earlier $5.4 million. The adjusted net income per share in Q1 came to 13 cents, which fell 13 percent from a per-share loss of 15 cents in the same year-ago period.

Technology Products and Services revenues, or the proceeds from the sale, lease and maintenance of Imax’s theater systems network, rose 17 percent to $51 million. During the latest quarter, Imax installed 21 theater systems, compared to 15 systems in the same period of last year.

Imax saw its highest-grossing first quarter ever at the global box office with $298 million on the strength of a record-breaking Chinese New Year holiday, which delivered triple the company’s previous best with $182 million.

Phenomenon Ne Zha 2 has earned more than $164 million in Imax, the company’s highest-grossing local-language animated film and release in China ever. Global box office of $298 million in Q1 was up 12% year-over-year with other top grossing first-quarter titles including Captain America: Brave New World ($27 million), Mickey 17 ($11 million) and the Interstellar rerelease ($10 million).

Overall, the company beat on revenue, which rose 10% to $87 million (vs the $84.2 million Wall Street anticipated). Adjusted earnings per share was in line at 13 cents. Shares are down in after-hours trading.

This year is seeing a record number of so-called “filmed for Imax” releases worldwide including Sinners last weekend, which kicked off a run of eight consecutive Hollywood releases filmed with Imax cameras.

Jessica Chastain is set to star in a new horror film directed by Rob Savage and based on Incidents Around the House, a novel by Josh Malerman. The project is being developed by Universal Pictures with Atomic Monster and Blumhouse, in association with Spin a Black Yarn.

Nathan Elston, known for his work on Succession, is writing the screenplay. Plot details have not been released, but the source material centers on a young girl who perceives a supernatural presence in her home, which she names “Other Mommy.” The story unfolds within a family dynamic shaped by fear and uncertainty.

James Wan is producing the film through Atomic Monster, alongside Michael Clear, Judson Scott, Macdara Kelleher, Rob Savage, Josh Malerman, and Ryan Lewis. Alayna Glasthal is overseeing the project for Atomic Monster.

Chastain’s past work in horror includes Mama, directed by Andy Muschietti, and It: Chapter Two, where she reunited with the director.

It’s time to look at the work of one of the greatest directors of our generation: Christopher Nolan. How big is Nolan these days? Interstellar, a movie which was never among the director’s top grossers, hit IMAX screens last week for its tenth anniversary, and screenings have been selling out constantly. As a regular listener to the Kermode & Mayo film podcast, I’m well aware of its ‘six laugh test’ criteria. That is, a film comedy needs to generate half a dozen chuckles at the least to earn its keep.

I have a slight variant on it: the six characters test. I’m increasingly finding with big Hollywood films that I struggle to remember the names of more than two characters by the time I get to the end credits. It might be my failing faculties, but I also think a lot of blockbusters struggle to generate characters who you can remember the day after. James Cameron’s Aliens? I can reel off a bunch of names. James Cameron’s Avatar?...

Timothée Chalamet has become a very big deal over the last decade or so. With two Academy Award nominations and an ever-expanding list of excellent movies under his belt, the actor has flaunted his talent in a vast array of roles that range from playing Bob Dylan in "A Complete Unknown" (2024) to starring as Paul Atreides in Denis Villeneuve's "Dune" movies and following Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp in portraying eccentric chocolatier Willy Wonka in "Wonka" (2023). That's a lot, especially from a young actor who seems destined to turn in great roles for many decades to come.

Any one of Chalamet's best movies is a great way for a movie fan to spend a couple of hours glued to their seat. However, few prolific actors can maintain a perfect win record throughout their career, and even one as wildly successful as Chalamet has a few less than beloved films in his CV.

I know, I know, Tenet had us all doing mental gymnastics, rewinding scenes like we were CIA analysts with a film degree. But five years later, it hit me: Christopher Nolan didn’t just make a time-twisting masterpiece, he kind of extended Déjà Vu, that underrated Denzel Washington-Val Kilmer flick we all half-remember from 2006.

Seriously, watch ’em back-to-back. Time loops? Check. Sci-fi tech? Yup. Stoic lead unraveling causality while trying to save the girl? Triple check. Nolan went full Nolan with it. And to be for real, I feel like I cracked a cinematic conspiracy, and no one’s talking about it. So, let’s rewind.

Universal Pictures has very big hopes for Christopher Nolan's star-studded adaptation of Homer's Odyssey. A studio exec recently spoke about the upcoming film at CinemaCon 2025.

Per Variety, Jim Orr, Universal's distribution chief, spoke very highly of Nolan's Odyssey adaptation, calling it a "visionary, once-in-a-generation cinematic masterpiece that Homer himself would quite likely be proud of." While Orr appeared to be serious with his comments, the audience - made up largely of theater owners - laughed at the overstatement.

None could argue with Orr about The Odyssey's "staggering" all-star cast, which includes Matt Damon as Odysseus and Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Robert Pattinson and Charlize Theron, whose roles have yet to be revealed. Filming for the blockbuster epic remains ongoing, and leaked images from the set continue to give hints and clues as to actors' roles.

I have tried to dissect and explain the ending of Interstellar in a lucid manner from my understanding. I will not get into nuances of science about the Wormholes and Black Holes so you can study them separately here. Christopher Nolan himself stated,” People are always accusing my films of having plot holes, and I’m very aware of the plot holes in my films and very aware of when people spot them, but they generally don’t. But what were some science issues people had with the film? That was Kip’s domain.” I also want to add that this is a science Fiction movie, not a documentary on space that could have an accuracy of a cent percentage.

Amazon MGM Studios started its inaugural CinemaCon presentation with a bang: the first trailer for Project Hail Mary, a new science-fiction feature from directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller with Ryan Gosling in the lead role.

The movie is based on the 2021 novel by Andy Weir (The Martian) with a script from Drew Goddard. The ten-year anniversary celebrations for director Christopher Nolan's epic science-fiction film Interstellar are showing no signs of abating. Not too long after the movie was re-released in theaters worldwide, it entered a rather exclusive list on the platform Letterboxd, where users can log, review, and rate films. Interstellar is now among only three titles on the platform with over five million views. Released in 2014, the film featured Matthew McConaughey as a NASA astronaut who goes on a mission to find a habitable new planet for a severely endangered humankind.

On Monday, Letterboxd announced that Interstellar had become the latest film to achieve over 5 million views, joining Greta Gerwig's Barbie and David Fincher's Fight Club. It's an eclectic list that reflects the diverse tastes of the platform's users. While Interstellar is a philosophical big screen spectacle, Barbie is a satirical comedy drama, and Fight Club is the definition of a cult hit.

Holy Hannah. After last week, I'm used to a lighter workload. Granted, most of these properties aren't new, just new to Netflix. There are certainly a lot of classic films in the group, so I'll hit the highlights. Or at least a dozen of them. Maybe even a baker's dozen, lucky you.

Netflix closes out March with three original titles, then bombards us with 27 features on April Fool's Day. Unless they're doing some weird meta-promotion, and not releasing anything on April 1st. Speaking of April Fool's - I've included one fake title in the list. Hopefully, you'll be able to discover it without too much trouble.

Every month, Netflix has to purge some of its catalog and make room for new arrivals. Still, the first week of April 2025 is rough. If you wanted to catch many of the films below, you have two days left.

There is no way to binge-watch everything that is leaving. That is true even if you line up several TVs and your computer(s) next to each other and play different things at once. Don't do that because that would be weird (or would it?).
