"Where's Scooby Doo?" is the first of two two parters of 'The New Scooby and Scrappy Doo Show'. The other being the show's last episode "Wedding Bells Boos" (for me the best episode). The show has fared a good deal better on rewatch despite some episodes being a lot better than others. This was one of the episodes that won me over, even when my feelings on the show were a lot more mixed than they are now. There were episodes that did little for me on first watch, but others that worked very well.
One of the episodes of 'The New Scooby and Scrappy Doo Show' that worked very well is "Where's Scooby Doo?" Actually think it's even better on rewatch, due to finding more to like about the Hitchcockian-like premise and overall plot. A perfect episode it might not be, but when it comes to the best episodes of 'The New Scooby and Scrappy Doo Show' "Where's Scooby Doo" is definitely up there as one of the better ones and have always felt that even when going into double digits.
It's not a perfect episode by all means. Do think that the second part was a little rushed at times especially in the lead up to when Scooby is found.
Also thought that there could have been a reason provided for why the little man constantly kept disappearing.
However, the animation is colourful and fluid enough. The music has energy and atmosphere, and while the intro has always struck me as too short the melody of the theme tune is memorable. The voice acting is never less than solid, and uniformly great from all the regulars (Casey Kasem especially). There is a lot of amusing dialogue and a good deal for the spy/detective genre that is obvious from the very beginning.
The story is a fun one that is more complicated than the usual Scooby Doo episode without being confusing. Did like the suspense when the gang are talking to all the suspects. "Where's Scooby Doo?" is one of the few episodes of 'The New Scooby and Scrappy Doo Show' where the perpetrator was a surprise (in a show where most of the perpetrators were obvious), in an episode with a higher suspect count and where it could have been any one of those people responsible. The ending is a clever one and is surprising, with there being more than one clue throughout the episode it is not out of the blue (something that was felt on first watch as a kid, but more is picked up on when older generally).
Love how smart Daphne is, here at her smartest in a show that saw her as refreshingly resourceful and more of a leader, especially with the sweater. What she says about the sweater are things she would not have said in the older incarnations, that's how much she has come on as a character and in a good way. Scooby's antics, mostly in flashbacks, are very entertaining and very typical of Scooby.
Overall, liked it very much as a child even when a non fan of the show and still like it very much now. One of the best of the show. 8/10.
