'The New Scooby and Scrappy Doo Show' was one of the Scooby Doo shows that was actually better than remembered through young adult eyes. Never disliked the show, but it was never among my favourites of the Scooby Doo franchise. It still isn't and some episodes are better than others, which is true actually of all the shows in the franchise but more so the 80s incarnations. But there were a few things not picked up upon before that came off really well, and what bothered me when younger actually was one of the best things.

It does make me sad about giving this title a slightly above mixed feelings rating, with "Hound of the Scoobyvilles" being as good as it is and a fine example of why 'The Scooby and Scrappy Doo Show' shouldn't be dismissed. To me, it was hard for me to rate it any higher due to "The Dinosaur Deception" being so mediocre. Along with "Scoobygeist"/"Quagmire Quake Caper", this is the double bill with the biggest divide in individual ratings.

"Hound of the Scoobyvilles" (9/10)- One of the best episodes of the show, let down only by the premature over-obviousness of the perpetrator with them being given away pretty much a third in.

On the other hand, there is a genuinely creepy atmosphere and the at times suitably nightmarish visuals help. The dark horror like backgrounds are particularly atmospheric in a way that is quite striking. The music never feels discordant with the action and the intro, while too short, is well designed and hardly forgettable musically. The voice acting from the regulars is great as is that for Bentley, love upper class-like British voices. The humour amuses even if it is quite goofy in an endearing way. The monster is one of the show's scarier ones and doesn't look silly. The setting is beautiful and suitably ominous. The gang are nailed, Shaggy and Scooby are typically loveable, Daphne's resourcefulness and leadership are refreshing and Scrappy doesn't bother me. The story is fun and creepy with a lively pace and it is overall one of the better episode to have an individual gang member as prime suspect.

"The Dinosaur Deception" (4/10)- The complete opposite in overall quality. There are a few plus points, with some colourful animation, a cool monster, lively music and strong voice work from the regulars (particularly Casey Kasem). As well as Daphne's refreshing character writing, showing a big evolution to her character compared to the first three Scooby Doo shows.

Unfortunately, those good things are outweighed by the bad and the flaws here are similar to "Quagmire Quake Caper", though perhaps marginally worse. The plot is typical, by the numbers and very thin (even thinner than "Quagmire Quake Caper" and that takes some doing), one that easily could have been done and solved in half the time it took. Making for some draggy, over-stretched pacing. There is no suspense or surprises and it just feels bland and easily forgettable. The supporting characters were forgotten not long after and Scrappy's contribution is not particularly memorable this time. As well as the story being even flimsier, the perpetrator is also even more obvious ("Quagmire Quake Caper" didn't make the mistake of giving the perpetrator's identity away quite some way before the end). The only improvement is the vastly superior monster, which was cool and menacing.

Concluding, one episode is great and one is mediocre. 6/10.
