Clips of It’s A Wonderful Life appear in all sorts of TV shows and films, some predictable Christmas fare and some you might not expect…
Thanks to NBC’s long-standing tradition of airing Frank Capra’s 1946 festive fantasy drama every 24th of December, It’s A Wonderful Life has become a Stateside Christmas institution. The film’s story of a small town family man facing financial ruin being coaxed back from suicide by an angel who shows him how important he is to the world is now as festive as overspending and overeating.
Its ubiquity means that It’s A Wonderful Life is one of the first ports of call when shows and movies want to inject a festive feel into their fictional worlds, hence it having been subject to more on-screen references, quotes, parodies and homages than you can shake a jingle bell at. The Muppets, The Simpsons,...

Broadway Video Television president JoAnn Alfano has left Lorne Michaels' company to launch her own banner, TV Tray Entertainment.
Alfano, who was a development executive at NBC and Universal Media Studios' predecessor NBC Studios before joining BV in 2003, is staying put at UMS with a two-year first-look development deal.
Meanwhile, BV is in the process of re-upping its primetime development deal with the studio. The company is expected to expand development in New York and to announce its staffing plans soon.
"We are truly thrilled to welcome JoAnn in this new capacity, and we know that her successful development experience at BV and on the studio and network side will pay creative dividends," UMS president Katherine Pope said. "It's wonderful to see her open her own production company under our roof, and we can't wait to get started working."
At BV, Alfano was involved in the development and served as an executive producer on the critically praised comedies 30 Rock for NBC, Sons & Daughters for ABC and USA Network's upcoming comedic one-hour series To Love and Die.
Alfano will continue to serve as an executive producer on the BVTV/UMS-produced Love, which was created by Sara Goodman and stars Shiri Appleby, Tim Matheson, Frances Fisher, Christine Adams and Kristin Datillo.

Alicia Witt is joining the squad of Law & Order: Criminal Intent, the drama series moving from NBC to USA Network in the fall.
The casting is one of many programming announcements made Sunday by NBC Universal's cable stable at the Television Critics Assn.'s final cable session. Bravo announced new season pickups of The Real Housewives of Orange County and Top Chef, while Sci Fi is resurrecting the former series Farscape for an Internet-only run.
The addition of Witt also reflects something of a new trend at USA, where network president Bonnie Hammer is looking to bring in strong lead female characters in upcoming new series, including In Plain Sight and To Love & Die, which star Mary McCormack and Shiri Appleby, respectively.
"USA in recent years has been a little too focused on guys for my tastes," said Hammer, who also is president of Sci Fi.
Witt (The Upside of Anger) will sub for Julianne Nicholson, who will be out on maternity leave. She plays Det. Nola Falacci opposite Chris Noth's Det. Mike Logan.
"Alicia Witt will add a new dimension to the series as it enters its seventh season," said Jeff Wachtel, executive vp original programming at USA.
In an unusual move, "CI" was left off corporate sibling NBC's schedule during May's upfront presentations and sent packing to USA, where it will begin running Thursdays at 10 p.m.

USA Network has given a series pickup to "To Love and Die", a light one-hour from creator Sara Goodman, Lorne Michaels' Broadway Video Television and Universal Media Studios.
The network has ordered 11 additional episodes of "Die", which centers on a fun-loving thirtysomething (Shiri Appleby) with abandonment issues who becomes convinced that her dating problems would be resolved if only she could track down the father (Tim Matheson) she never knew. When she finds him, she discovers that he's an assassin and that she might have found her calling.
"It has a high-concept character at its center and a light tone with a somewhat twisted soul, which fits our brand perfectly," said USA executive vp original programming Jeff Wachtel.
On the series, Appleby and Matheson are joined by Frances Fisher, Christine Adams, and Kristin Dattilo. Additionally, negotiations are underway with the pilot's co-star Ivan Sergei to continue on the series.
While the timing of the series pickup is said to be tied to the options on the actors in the pilot coming up, the network's decision to order "Die" was prompted by its recent success with the female-centered miniseries "The Starter Wife".
"We made our mark with character-driven dramas with guy leads with The Dead' Zone, ' 'Monk' and 'Psych, ' now we would love to have shows with female leads," Wachtel said.

Frances Fisher and Ivan Sergei have joined the cast of USA Network's tentatively titled pilot To Love and Die in L.A.
The project centers on a fun-loving thirtysomething (Shiri Appleby) with abandonment issues who becomes convinced that her dating problems would be resolved if only she could track down the father (Tim Matheson) she never knew. When she finds him, she discovers that he's an assassin and that she may have found her calling.
Fisher will portray Janet, the mother of Appleby's character, and Sergei will star as Blue, a potential love interest for Appleby's character who also works for her father.
Jackie de Crinis, senior vp original scripted series programming at USA, praised the two newest cast members.
"Frances was just so mind-blowingly funny and beautiful and hit every layer of this character with wit, elegance and self-confidence -- she knocked it out of the box," de Crinis said. "Ivan is such a great get -- he's handsome, sexy and cool and just felt like a great Blue. We're so happy to have such an incredible ensemble."...
