Since we’ve already had faith-based features involving football, baseball (“Where Hope Grows”), basketball (“Slamma Jamma”), boxing (“Carman: The Champion”), competitive skateboarding (“Hardflip”) and even mixed martial arts (“The Fight Within”), it was doubtless inevitable that someone would produce a movie where the Lord works in mysterious ways on the golf course. Robert Redford’s “The Legend of Bagger Vance” (2000) didn’t quite qualify, given the nondenominational nature of its spirituality. On the other hand, “Walking With Herb” is explicitly and unashamedly upfront about depicting how an agent of God, or someone of an even higher pay grade, might directly intervene in providing a shot at redemption — and no handicap at all — for a golfer far from the fairway.

The distributor has taken the unusual step of acquiring worldwide rights to J.D. Scott’s sports drama.
Samuel Goldwyn Films will release Spirit Of The Game theatrically in partnership with Purdie Distribution on October 7.
The 1950s-set tale tells the true story of a group of young missionaries who travel to Australia to spread the gospel and wind up helping the fledgling national basketball team as it prepares for the 1956 Olympic Games. Kevin Sorbo stars.
“We could not be more excited about releasing Spirit Of The Game with Purdie Distribution,” said Peter Goldwyn, president of Samuel Goldwyn Films. “This is an inspiring sports drama which showcases the compatibility of faith and competition.”
Goldwyn released sports film Facing The Giants, which grossed more than $10m.

Risen is a modest but engaging riff on the old post-crucifixion Easter legend as told through the eyes of a non-believer. In 33 Ad Jerusalem, Roman occupiers are under threat of a Jewish uprising. The Jews claim a Nazarene named Yeshua (aka Jesus – played by Clifton Curtis) is the Messiah, so Pontius Pilate (Peter Firth) promptly has him crucified, then orders Roman officer Clavius (Joseph Fiennes) to witness the execution and help dispose of the body. Three days later Jesus’ corpse has vanished from its cave tomb, though the entrance was blocked with a boulder and watched by guards. Pilate orders Clavius and Lucius (Tom Felton), to find Jesus and his disciples at all costs, for fear that if they don’t quickly produce a corpse, the Jews will rise up. Thus begins a manhunt of biblical proportions.

It's pretty rare for a movie to rise from second place to first at the box office in its second week of release. It's pretty rare for such a movie to defeat a summer smash that's topped the chart for three weeks running. And it's pretty rare for a low-budget, Christian-themed movie with a star-free cast to become the top-grossing film in North America.
And yet, "War Room" did all three of those things this week. After last weekend's impressive $11.4 million debut in the No. 2 slot, the film rose to the top spot this weekend with an estimated $9.4 million from Friday to Sunday (and a projected $12.3 million over the four-day holiday weekend). It dethroned previous three-time champ "Straight Outta Compton" (No. 2, with an estimated $8.9 million from Friday to Sunday and $11.2 million over the Labor Day holiday). It also defeated two new wide releases, one starring the iconic Robert Redford in...

The heavenly $11 million opening for the faith-based drama “War Room” was the latest earthly blessing for Alex Kendrick, who with his brother Stephen has become one of the most successful independent film producers in recent years. The brothers’ first three films — “Courageous,” “Fireproof” and “Facing the Giants” — were financed by Georgia’s Sherwood Baptist Church for a combined $5 million and wound up grossing nearly $80 million. The $3 million “War Room,” which Alex Kendrick co-wrote, produced, directed and starred in, was the first production under the brothers’ new banner, Kendrick Brothers Productions. And it seems poised to follow the...

Brothers Alex and Stephen Kendrick's faith-based empire is determined to convert religious-centric film doubters to believers through consistent box office success, as witnessed by War Room's $11 million debut this weekend. Despite playing in only 1,135 theaters, War Room placed No. 2 behind Straight Outta Compton, which grossed $13.2 million from 3,142 locations. The prayer-themed film marks the highest debut for the siblings, and their fifth collaboration after Courageous (2011), Fireproof (2008) and Facing the Giants (2006). Their first movie, Flywheel, was released on DVD in 2003. All of their projects have gone out

The last week in August is not a prime movie release slot, but there’s one new opener on Friday that is primed to exceed expectations: “War Room,” the latest Christian-themed feature by Georgia-based filmmakers Alex and Stephen Kendrick. The brothers have emerged as the most commercially successful independent producers of faith-based films. Their last three previous movies — 2006’s “Facing the Giants,” 2008’s “Fireproof,” which was the highest-grossing indie that year, and 2011’s “Courageous” — have taken in $87 million at the box office on a combined budget of $2.6 million. “War Room,” with a more ambitious $3 million budget, is on track...

Forecast Update: Looks like that headline, "'Compton' Three-peats," should have had a question mark behind it. Sony is reporting that War Room, the faith-based film from the Kendrick brothers, made $3.87M in Friday receipts while Universal reports that Straight Outta Compton made $3.83M. It may not be enough to take the weekend though as Sony is also projecting that War Room makes $10 - $10.5M by Sunday night. Universal places Compton at $12.3M. War Room's per screen average for Friday was $3,414 on 1,135 screens. That's close to the psa that Freestyle Releasing's Christian-themed God's Not Dead made last year in March when its Friday hit $2.8M on 780 screens, an average of $3,592 per. God's Not Dead, which ended the weekend with $9.2M and an eventual $60.8M domestic cume, opened in 4th on the charts but was in a much more crowded and competitive frame. Divergent, for example, was #1 with $54.6M that weekend.

Friday Am Update: From shows beginning at 8 p.m., Ouija opened to an estimated $911,000 from 2,061 theaters last night. That's on par with 2012's Sinister ($930,000), which went on to earn $18 million on opening weekend. John Wick wasn't far behind with an estimated $870,000 on Thursday night. That number essentially guarantees that the movie earns over $10 million this weekend, and points to a likely finish north of $15 million.Forecast: After a few busy weeks at the box office, look for things to quiet down a bit this weekend.Horror movie Ouija*based off the "game"*should open in first place with around $20 million. Meanwhile, John Wick will likely open behind holdovers Fury (2014) and Gone Girl.At 2,858 theaters, Ouija is poised to do solid business with teen moviegoers this weekend. The movie revolves around a group of teens who try to connect with their deceased friend via a Ouija board, and inadvertently summon an evil spirit instead.

Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz, Dream House This past weekend (Sept. 30-Oct. 2), Dolphin Tale grossed slightly less than estimated according to North American box-office actuals found at Box Office Mojo. Directed by Charles Martin Smith, and featuring Harry Connick Jr, Ashley Judd, Nathan Gamble, Austin Stowell, and Morgan Freeman, Dolphin Tale pulled in $13.91 million, or about $300,000 less than originally estimated. At no. 2, Bennett Miller's Moneyball collected $12.03 million, or about $500,000 less than estimated. Brad Pitt stars, along with Jonah Hill, Robin Wright, and Chris Pratt. At no. 3, The Lion King 3D added $10.61m, also below estimates but more than enough for it to remain well ahead of both Mike Nichols' The Graduate and Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park on Box Office Mojo's inflation-adjusted chart of all-time box-office champs. Originally released in 1994, The Lion King features songs by Elton John and Tim Rice, and the voices of Matthew Broderick, James Earl Jones,...

Ken Bevel, Ben Davies, Courageous Dolphin Tale Tops; The Lion King Surpasses The Graduate, Jurassic Park (Inflation-Adjusted): Box Office Directed by Capote's Bennett Miller and starring Brad Pitt, the baseball drama Moneyball was the no. 2 movie at the North American box office this weekend (Sept. 30-Oct. 2), according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. Featuring Jonah Hill, Robin Wright, and Chris Pratt, Moneyball's cume currently stands at $38.46 million. Cost: $50 million. Alex Kendrick, Kevin Downes, Courageous Newcomers Courageous, 50/50, Dream House, and What's Your Number failed to make it to the top three spots at the North American box office on Friday, Sept. 30. Also of note, movie stars — e.g., Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, Anna Faris, Chris Evans — took the backseat to a Christian Message. Directed by Capote's Bennett Miller and starring Brad Pitt, the baseball drama Moneyball topped the Us/Canada chart, according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. Moneyball, which has for the most part trailed behind The Lion King 3D this past week, grossed $3.85 million (-43% from last Friday). Jonah Hill, Robin Wright, and Chris Pratt co-star. Kiddie flicks — both with the advantage of 3D surcharges — came next: at no. 2, Dolphin Tale earned $3.46m (-32%), while at nearly 1,200 fewer theaters The Lion King 3D collected $3.3m. The actor who made Bo Duke a TV staple during the early 1980s will play a modern George Bailey in "Doonby."
In the feature film, John Schneider stars as Sam Doonby, a happy-go-lucky drifter who takes up residence in a small Texas town but seems suspiciously immune to the misfortunes that beset the other townsfolk.
The film is described as a cross between "It's a Wonderful Life" and "Crazy Heart" and also stars Robert Davi as the town sheriff.
Tommy Warren, who was behind the "Teed Off" series of golf comedies from National Lampoon, is producing with Mark Joseph, a marketing veteran whose campaigns included "The Passion of the Christ" and "Facing the Giants."
Joseph also is co-producing the film's soundtrack, which includes music from AC/DC lead singer Brian Johnson.
"Doonby" is written and directed by British filmmaker Peter Mackenzie and will be shot at Spiderwood Studios near Austin.

If David Nixon has his way, the 3-D craze that is sweeping the multiplexes with mainstream pictures like “Avatar” and “Alice in Wonderland” will carry Christian-themed message movies to larger audiences. And it will happen sooner rather than later.
“I definitely think that if the (craze) hangs on, then in the next year or two, we will do a Christian film in 3-D,” said Nixon, the successful producer and director behind such inspirational hits as “Fireproof” and “Facing the Giants.” He called to promote his latest (two-dimensional) Christian drama “Letters to God,” which is in theaters.
“They’ve made is so easy now,” Nixon continued. “The technology doesn’t hurt your eyes. And it’s not about the effects. It’s not about that cheesy kind of play in the 1950s. It’s about adding depth, the way your eyes really see the world. So I...

The new film "Letters To God" is advertised as being from one of the producers of "Facing the Giants." If this is true then I wish the makers of "Letter" had learned the "Facing the Giants" lesson. That being you don't need to beat people over the head with religion in order to make your point. "Letters To God" keeps letting the story be interrupted by the sponsor, which in this case is Christianity. The core story concerns a young boy named Tyler (Tanner Maguire) who has a malignant brain tumor. He is taking chemotherapy which may or may not work. His father is recently deceased and that leaves his mother Maddie (Robin Lively) with the main responsibility of the household. Her oldest son Ben (Michael Bolten) is feeling isolated. He loves Tyler but resents the time spent on him. Maddie's mother...

After conquering the Easter opening weekend record with $61.3 million, Clash of the Titans aims to repeat as box office king this weekend. It will face stiff competition, though, from comedy Date Night, starring Steve Carell and Tina Fey. Also opening in nationwide release is Letters to God, which hopes to replicate the minor success of comparable Christian movies. Overall business will likely be way down from last weekend, when Clash, Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Too? and The Last Song debuted. Clash of the Titans adds 25 theaters this weekend for a total of 3,802, though this will do little to prevent a big second weekend decline. Recent similar movies 300 and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor fell 54 and 59 percent from their openings, respectively. With mixed word of mouth (Box Office Mojo readers gave the movie a decent "B" grade, but the tacked-on 3D effects have been greeted...

Sherwood Pictures has announced that they will begin production on Courageous.
The film will revolve around “four fathers and friends, all in law enforcement, who go through a terrible tragedy and begin looking at their role as fathers. They’re soon challenging one another to fulfill God’s intention for fathers.”
Senior Pastor Michael Catt, Executive Pastor Jim McBride, and ministers Stephen and Alex Kendrick will produce.
Sherwood Pictures is the Christian faith-based studio behind the mammoth hits Fireproof and Facing the Giants.
Production is set to begin in March with no debut date. Sherwood is expected to use existing fans, along with churches and non-profit organizations to provide buzz for the movie; a plan that has worked brilliantly for their previous projects.

Production is set to begin in March with no debut date. Sherwood is expected to use existing fans, along with churches and non-profit organizations to provide buzz for the movie; a plan that has worked brilliantly for their previous projects.
