Al Pacino is not who Oscar Wilde had in mind when he wrote “Salomé.” One of Wilde’s lesser-produced plays, “Salomé” dramatizes the Biblical story of King Herod and his stepdaughter, who danced for him before demanding the head of John the Baptist. Pacino starred in and directed a staged reading of the play in 2006, snugly embodying a lascivious old man as he pleads for a dance from Salomé, portrayed by a 29-year-old Jessica Chastain. Fiery-haired and armed with classical acting chops, the then-unknown Juilliard graduate stole the show from Pacino.
That staged reading at Los Angeles’ Wadsworth Theater produced two little-seen cinematic products in “Wilde Salomé” (2011) and “Salomé” (2013), now making their New York debuts in repertory at the Quad Cinema. “Wilde Salomé” chronicles the staged reading as well as Pacino’s attempt to film the production for a movie adaptation, which became “Salomé.” Pacino explains it best in “Wilde Salomé...

Sneak Peek revealing footage of "X-Men: Dark Phoenix" actress Jessica Chastain from the feature "Salomé" (2006), on news of the upcoming theatrical release of the 'behind-the-scenes' documentary "Wilde Salomé":
"I have no issues with nudity," said Chastain, "especially in a lot of European cinema that I adore, but I find that in American cinema, the idea of nudity has always bothered me.
"When people are completely in control of their decisions, that is a really exciting thing. I love the human form — male nudity, female nudity, I’m all about it. I had to get to that place where, for me, it was my decision.
"What is that power? What is that freedom? Even the idea of the 'Salem' witch trials, when you think of the young girls dancing naked. What is so scary to society about that kind of female sexual freedom. I realized that there’s power in that to harness,...

Jessica Chastain has no issues with nudity, but only when the character decides to be naked by her own volition. The actress recently spoke with Vulture to promote the upcoming theatrical release of “Wilde Salomé,” a behind-the-scenes documentary about Al Pacino’s 2006 production of “Salomé,” which starred a then-unknown Chastain. One of the central scenes of the play finds Chastain’s eponymous character performing a nude dance for Pacino’s King Herod.
“I have no issues with nudity, especially in a lot of European cinema that I adore, but I find that in American cinema, the idea of nudity has always bothered me,” Chastain said. “I realized why: For me, I’m uncomfortable with nudity when it feels like it’s not the person’s decision to be naked, when it’s something that has been put upon them.”
“In a way, I see that as like a victimization,” she continued.

Perhaps it’s inevitable that actors with a career as venerated as Al Pacino’s slip into revery. The stage has his heart. His films – when they come – smartly play on the legend. Other recent releases (Wilde Salomé, Danny Collins, The Humbling) have seen the 75-year-old give creative ennui a nod and a wink. Manglehorn is a more sage assessment of a talent maturing with age.

★★★★☆ The shrouded world of the stage proved very much the theme of last year's Venice Film Festival. Director Barry Levinson's Philip Roth adaptation The Last Act (2014) is a bird of an entirely different feather to the screwball antics of She's Funny That Way (2014) or the anarchic brio of Alejandro González Iñárritu's Birdman (2014). Featuring a masterly turn by Al Pacino, The Last Act is actually closer to Pacino's own theatre-based documentaries Looking for Richard (1996) and Wilde Salomé (2011) in its looseness and postmodern playfulness. It's also by turns moving and very funny. Simon Axler (Al Pacino) is an ageing actor in decline and verging of a nervous breakdown.

Confession: We were distracted by Jessica Chastain's cleavage in this plunging Erdem dress. It's far more boob than the Wilde Salomé star typically shows and we love a style 180! Then we finally noticed the rest of the look and were slightly less thrilled. Our first thought: Banana-flavored cotton candy. Our second: We can't believe it's not (made of) butter! As much as we love both of those food items, neither is a couture compliment. What's sad about this style sitch is that it's the fault of color alone. The tiered skirt is fantastic, that bold neckline is beautiful, and the length is gorgeous on this tall, red-headed beauty. We even love the texture throughout the fabric to...

Oscar Wilde's controversial play, based on the biblical story about the beheading of John the Baptist, has been a long-time obsession of Pacino's, on a par with Shakespeare's "Richard III" for the actor. But although he filmed his theatrical staging of Wilde's tragedy way back in 2006 (casting Chastain in her first feature) and his companion-piece documentary "Wilde Salomé" premiered at the 2011 Venice Film Festival (where it received mixed reviews), yesterday marked their first presentation as a double bill. Both films and the Q&A were broadcast live to dozens of cinemas across the UK and Ireland. Initially banned from the London stage for its salacious depiction of biblical characters, "Salomé" was one of Wilde's most controversial works, but the great wit's wordplay within it is rhythmic, ornate and hypnotic; it's not difficult to fathom why Pacino became smitten after seeing Steven Berkoff's famed London production in the late.

If your Tuesday needs a few more severed heads than usual, you’re in luck: the new trailer for Al Pacino’s Oscar Wilde double bill of Salomé and Wilde Salomé is here. The play has long been a passion project for the shouty actor, and there’s plenty of excellent Pacino ranting (“I got four days to shoot a 90-minute play!”) for those who like that sort of thing. In the title role is one Jessica Chastain. Her performance predates Zero Dark Thirty and The Tree Of Life, though it was purportedly this play that brought her to the attention of one Terrence Malick. The original play sees the titular Salomé, daughter of King Herod, cultivate an obsession with John the Baptist, leading to dancing, pining and beheading. As Wilde himself wrote, “One should not look at anything. Neither at things, nor at people should one look. Unless it...

Al Pacino, Christopher Walken and Alan Arkin walk into a hotel room, and that sounds like the set-up for a joke. It's more like a long-delayed punchline. New York — Al Pacino, energized by a conversation that has inevitably turned to the intricacies of acting, is snapping his fingers.
"When you get me on the acting trail, I get on that train," he says, punctuating what he calls an improvised "thesis on time" with staccato snaps.
The 72-year-old may be gray-haired and a little worn, but he remains, like a dancer, always on his toes, and still enamored of the "crazy, crazy, crazy thing" that is acting: "You're always looking for what's going to feed you, what's going to feed the spirit and get you going."
And Pacino is still getting going. Yet the subject of time – how much is needed to find a character (years in some cases, he says) and how it dictates the parts he chooses now – played a large role in a recent interview with the actor at the Waldorf Astoria in New York.

Jessica Chastain landed the lead role in "Zero Dark Thirty" at the end of a crazy year in which she'd appeared in two Best Picture nominees, "The Tree of Life" and "The Help" (winning an Oscar nominaton for the latter), along with "Take Shelter," "Coriolanus," "The Debt," "Wilde Salome" and "Texas Killing Fields." And while 2012 didn't see as many releases, it brought "Lawless," "Tar," the lead role in a new Broadway production of "The Heiress," her voiceover work in "Madagascar 3" -- and, towering over the rest, her performance in "Zdt"...

Remember last year when Jessica Chastain was everywhere? It wasn't by design. After being discovered by Al Pacino some years ago during an audition, the actress made her way into the business. She was cast by Pacino (who she called her "acting godfather" at last year's Palm Springs awards gala) in "Wilde Salome" and landed roles in a slew of other films that all just happened to drop at once. So 2011 became her big coming out...to the tune of an Oscar nomination for her work in "The Help" and various precursor wins for her performances in that film, "Take Shelter" and...

When Oscar Wilde visited San Francisco in 1882, his three-day presence caused a local sensation, with throngs of admirers mobbing him at every turn.
Al Pacino, in town for the premiere of his Oscar Wilde-themed documentary "Wilde Salome" found his portrayal of the notorious author-performer to be similarly compelling -- how else to explain the throngs which surrounded him from the Castro Theater to the Fairmont Hotel?

San Francisco gets a little starstruck when new notables appear; those red carpets seem to compel the teensiest bit of green envy of our Angeleno brethren, or our New York cousins, or our Parisian pals. It's just all so paparazzi-perfect, so flashbulb fantastic. So our little City was literally a-Twitter when the Pacino premiere also included designer Jean Paul Gaultier with burlesque idol Dita Von Teese, and appearances by local matinee idols Peter Coyote and Joan Chen.

Jessica Chastain has spoken of the perks of her rise to fame. Last year, Chastain starred in a total of seven films - Coriolanus, The Debt, Take Shelter, Texas Killing Fields, Wilde Salome, The Tree of Life and the Oscar-winning The Help. Chastain shared to People: "I now have more access, which is amazing. I've always wanted to wear stuff like this, I've just never been given the access. That's what has changed for me. "I'm not a model, and everything looks better (more)...

At the best of times, particularly in the latter stages of his career, Marlon Brando was pretty unpredictable; you never knew what you might get from the mercurial actor once he was on set. But in the case of the never-made "Divine Rapture," the filmmakers never got a chance to see what might happen out of their starry production. Set to star Brando, his friend Johnny Depp (they worked together on "The Brave" and "Don Juan DeMarco") and Debra Winger, the film was all set to shoot in Ballycotton, Ireland (indeed, you can see the cast in costume above) when producers CineFin failed to secure the $4 million they needed to make the movie, leaving the movie and many villagers in the lurch. This was back in 1995, however producer Barry Navidi (Al Pacino pics "The Merchant Of Venice," "Wilde Salome" and the upcoming "King Lear") has stuck with it and it...

Clearly believing that Sly Stallone should not have the market cornered on older blokes doing action stuff, Al Pacino, Alan Arkin and Christopher Walken have all signed on to star in Stand Up Guys. The film, which formerly warned kids off its lawn under the name Old Timers, follows two aging criminals facing a big day the following morning: one of them must kill his friend. They decide to go out for one last night of debauchery, which involves visiting a brothel, stealing some cars and escaping a police pursuit. But they also take a little time to reflect on their lives. Because, you know, no action comedy is complete without that bit.Noah Haidie wrote the original version of the script, and Fisher Stevens – yes, the one from Short Circuit, who is these days an Oscar winner thanks to producing dolphin doc The Cove – will call the shots this April in La.

Back in October we brought you the news when Jessica Chastain (Wilde Salome, Mama) scored the role of the wife of Tom Cruise‘s character, the first of two female lead roles in the big-screen adaptation of writer-director Joseph Kosinski‘s graphic novel Oblivion.
Shortly thereafter Chastain had to depart the Universal Pictures project due to scheduling conflicts, leaving both female lead roles open. Now, Variety reports that Olga Kurylenko (Quantum of Solace, Hitman) and Andrea Riseborough (Being Human, Resistance) have scored the two female lead roles in the film.
There still seems to be some question as to whether or not the film will revert to Oblivion, its original title or Horizons, the moniker the project took on when it was at Walt Disney Pictures.

Jessica Chastain was in Morocco when we spoke, jurying on a film festival. Or was she in Toronto filming a movie? No, maybe she was right here in New York City or in Los Angeles for a premiere or event? Who can say. It's been a dizzying year. Her definition of "staying put", I quickly discover, is staying in one place for a whole week. "I don't think this is a normal year for an actor," she says understating the case.
Chastain reigns over 2011's movies
She sounds bright and cheerful and ready for more movies, believe it or not, though she admits that the year has been tough on her personal life. This past summer she starred in two of the most talked about films of the year (The Tree of Life and The Help) and in the fall she was doing press for four more (The Debt, Take Shelter,...

Actress Says She Plays 'A Gun Moll' In 'Wettest County,' But Involvement In Princess Diana Biopic Isn't Certain Yet It's kind of remarkable to think that almost a year ago Jessica Chastain was barely known. Sure, geekier film folks (like us) might have known her as the girl who Terrence Malick had cast in "The Tree of Life," but few knew that she was going to be quite as omnipresent as she turned out be in 2011, starring and impressing in no less than six films (plus "Wilde Salome" on the festival circuit). Now, she's firmly arrived, and served as part of the jury at the Marrakech Film Festival where we caught up with Chastain earlier in the week, and she spilled the beans on a few of her upcoming projects, including John Hillcoat's "Wettest County" and a brief reunion with Malick for his untitled next film. The latter film,...

Jessica Chastain is the first to admit she has had a pretty amazing year. The Juilliard graduate had already made a name for herself onstage, playing opposite Philip Seymour Hoffman in "Othello" and Al Pacino in "Salome." In fact, her first film role was "Wilde Salome," a part documentary, part staging of the play in which the sultry redhead embodies the title role. (The film is seeking distribution.) Following that, she shot the little-seen indie "Jolene," which was released last year. But in 2011, Chastain was everywhere. First there was her sublime turn in Terrence Malick's oft-delayed "The Tree of Life," playing the ethereal wife of Brad Pitt's character. Then she stole scenes as naive new bride Celia Foote in the big-screen adaptation of "The Help." If you were lucky, you caught her turn as the patient wife of a man having nightmarish visions of the future in "Take Shelter.

American actress Jessica Chastain is to dye her hair blonde, cut it short, put on a British accent for the first time and step into the daunting shoes of the late Princess Diana for what is sure to be a highly controversial biopic, Caught in Flight. The film is a British production from Ecosse Films, the studio behind the John Lennon biopic Nowhere Boy and the movie about Queen Victoria’s bereaved relationship with Scottish servant John Brown and is a package being sold to distributors at the American Film Market.
Written by The Libertine scribe Steven Jeffreys, the film will focus on the post-Charles divorce years from 1995 and up to Diana’s death in 1997 and her ‘secret affair’ with Dr. Hasnat Khan, regarded by some to be the true ‘love of her life’. The relationship came before she dated Dodi Fayed, and some speculate (as they do about...

If we’re simply talking about actors, 2011 was won by Jessica Chastain. Looking at her filmography from the past eleven months — The Tree of Life, The Help, The Debt, Texas Killing Fields, and Take Shelter — and what she has coming up in 2012 — The Wettest County in the World, Wilde Salome, Coriolanus, Mama, and Terrence Malick‘s next film — her sudden and, most importantly, deserved rise to success is impossible to deny. (She has a major role alongside Tom Cruise in 2013′s Horizons, to boot.)
Many of the projects listed above could be considered “prestigious,” and this latest casting is no exception. Toh has learned that she’ll be playing Princess Diana in Caught in Flight, an upcoming film to be directed by Downfall helmer Oliver Hirschbiegel. ★★☆☆☆ Ami Canaan Mann's (daughter of Michael Mann) debut film Texas Killing Fields (2011) is a run-of-the-mill police procedural, which really has no place this year's Venice Film Festival. Detectives Souder (Sam Worthington) and Heigh (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) are investigating a series of abductions and murders of young women. The older detective is gripped by an almost religious sense of mission whereas Souder for all his in-your-face attitude, fights shy of drifting out of their jurisdiction.
This latter point is particularly problematic as the Texas Killing Fields - the dumping ground where most the bodies are found - are in his ex-wife's jurisdiction. Jessica Chastain plays the role of the feisty police officer with verve in her second outing at Vff 2011 - she also played half the title role in Al Pacino's wonderfully entertaining documentary Wilde Salome (2011).

Last month, we told you about the five actresses who were testing to star opposite Tom Cruise in the big-screen adaptation of writer-director Joseph Kosinski‘s forthcoming sci-fi project, Horizons. To refresh your memory, the actresses were Jessica Chastain (Wilde Salome), Olga Kurylenko (Empires of the Deep), Olivia Wilde (In Time), Brit Marling (Another Earth) and Noomi Rapace (Prometheus).
Now, Variety reports that Jessica Chastain, who we told you had recently scored a role in director Guillermo del Toro‘s supernatural horror film, Mama, has nabbed one of the two female lead roles in Kosinski’s film for Universal Pictures. The two female roles are the wife of Cruise’s character, and a “Mysterious” woman. It’s currently unclear which role Chastain has been cast in.

Jessica Chastain's star continues to rise. The actress shot two films some time ago (The Debt and The Tree of Life) which both saw release this year along with Take Shelter, Wilde Salome, The Help, Texas Killing Fields and Coriolanus. That's a lot of late-2011 exposure for an actress that was basically an unknown to the public as recently as this past May, even if much of it is only via festival appearances. She's also shot roles in The Wettest County in the World and Terrence Malick's next film, and is set for the film Mama. And now she's been tapped to co-star with Tom Cruise in Joseph Kosinski's Tron Legacy follow-up Horizons. (Once titled Oblivion.) We know now that Chastain will have one of two roles, but not yet which one. Here's the plot: In a future where the Earth’s surface has been irradiated beyond recognition,...

Jessica Chastain seems to be all over the place this fall. She made her debut this summer in Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life, and is on screens now or soon in The Help, The Debt, Take Shelter, Coriolanus, Wilde Salome and Texas Killing Fields. Quite a lineup for an actress that no one could have identified a year or two ago. She's still booking new roles, too. One of her most recently announced gigs is Mama, a feature-length expansion of a short film by Andres Muschietti, who wrote and directed the short. And now Chastain will be joined by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who plays Jaime Lannister in Game of Thrones. Guillermo del Toro is producing the film. Look, I'm the first to crack a Justin Bieber joke, but this hit piece, Does Justin Bieber Have Gender Identity Issues? is beyond tacky. And the author claims to be a doctor. I'm guessing from the same institution of higher learning that produced Fox's Dr. Keith Ablow.
This Catholic mom is afraid to leave her house for fear of seeing something gay. She was recently scandalized by "one gay couple was engaged in inappropriate 'elbow-rubbing.' Another lesbian couple was hugging in a way that was 'clearly not friendly.'" Honestly, I don't want to call her a bigot, because she's obviously in need of help.
In news from Austalia that is yet to be authenticated, a graphic that appeared after the finale for Torchwood: Miracle Day said Captain Jack would return in 2012.

When Terrence Malick chose Jessica Chastain years ago to be the female lead in The Tree of Life she was all but unknown; now she seems to be everywhere, and is garnering great praise for her performances in Malick's movie, The Debt and (at the Venice film fest) Wilde Salome. Malick employed the same canny eye for casting with his first feature, Badlands, when he chose Sissy Spacek to star. So when the director picks a relative unknown to star in his as-yet untitled film [1] that will star Christian Bale, we should all take notice. The actress in question is Haley Bennett (Marley & Me, The Haunting of Molly Hartley), said to be the frontrunner for a role that has drawn no small amount of interest. She's not signed yet, but looks like the winner for the role. Rooney Mara, Clemence Poesy and Mia Wasikowska were all previously mentioned as being in contention for the part.

It’s tough to categorize a piece of work when even those involved aren’t quite sure what they’re dealing with. Al Pacino isn’t sure what “Wilde Salome” is but the documentary, film, play has premiered at Venice Film Festival. Pacino says the film project, starring Irish American actress Jessica Chastain, isn’t a documentary and it isn’t a movie either. He says “it’s much more ambitious and complicated gesture in cinema."
