We might be entering the dog days of summer but Hulu isn’t slowing down. The streamer’s list of new releases for August 2023 is a pretty impressive collection of content.
The biggest Hulu original this month is season 3 of true crime comedy Only Murders in the Building on Aug. 8. This time around Meryl Streep and Paul Rudd are joining the already-stacked cast that features Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. This season’s central murder appears to take place at a theater (outside the building) but I think we’ll let it slide.
That’s far from the only worthwhile original in August as Aug. 2 sees the premiere of the third and final season of superb comedy Reservation Dogs. That will be followed by South Korean sci-fi series Moving on Aug. 9, Solar Opposites season 4 on Aug. 14, and A Murder at the End of the World on Aug. 29. Of course,...

For a high octane action film starring Vin Diesel as an extreme athlete version of James Bond, "XXX3: Return of Xander Cage" is much more entertaining than it has any right to be. With "Fast X" quickly approaching to help kick-off the summer season, it's clear Diesel has learned that, sometimes, there is safety in numbers. Having a huge cast around you helps take the pressure off of the actor at the top of the call sheet, and Diesel embraced the idea of having a team of some of the best action stars in the world come on board for the third adventure of Xander Cage.
Directed by DJ Caruso, the culmination of one of the most ridiculously entertaining action franchises in recent memory featured a stacked cast that included Donnie Yen, Ruby Rose, Samuel L. Jackson, Kris Wu, Toni Collette, and Thai boxer extraordinaire Tony Jaa as a bleach blonde villain named Talon.

There are diverse streaming releases slates and then there is Hulu’s list of new releases for May 2022. There are no big franchises here, no big themes – just a whole bunch of original and library titles for everyone to enjoy.
Hulu’s major original releases in May come in the middle of the month. Candy premieres on May 9 and stars Jessica Biel as your friendly neighborhood axe murderer. If that sounds a bit outlandish, bear in mind that this limited series is based on the real life story of Candy Montgomery and her victim, the tragically named Betty Gore. On May 15, Hulu will play host to Conversations with Friends. This is the latest adaptation of the works of Sally Rooney. After the breakaway success of Normal People, Hulu is undoubtedly hoping for more lightning in a bottle.
On the movie side of things, May will welcome The Valet on May...

"Twin Peaks: The Entire Mystery"
What's It About? David Lynch's two season TV series had viewers riveted to figure out who killed the beaming blonde homecoming queen Laura Palmer. And maybe, just maybe, some of us fell a little in love with Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan), the curious FBI agent sent to investigate Laura's murder while enjoying many damn fine cups of coffee.
Why We're In: This ten-disc set comes with both seasons of "Twin Peaks," as well as the movie "Fire Walk With Me," plenty of featurettes, and deleted scenes (!!!!) from the beloved TV series. Not that we'll ever really know what happened in the strange little town of Twin Peaks, Wa.

Tiff’s Midnight Madness program turned 25 this year, and for two and half decades, the hardworking programers have gathered some of the strangest, most terrifying, wild, intriguing and downright entertaining films from around the world. From dark comedies to Japanese gore-fests and indie horror gems, the Midnight Madness program hasn’t lost its edge as one the leading showcases of genre cinema. In its 25-year history, Midnight Madness has introduced adventurous late-night moviegoers to such cult faves as Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused and Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. But what separates Midnight Madness from, say, Montreal’s three and half week long genre festival Fantasia, is that Tiff selects only ten films to make the cut. In other words, these programmers don’t mess around. Last week I decided that I would post reviews of my personal favourite films that screened in past years. And just like the Tiff programmers,...

Asian action star Tony Jaa has signed to appear in Fast and Furious 7.
The Thai actor, who is best known for the Ong Bak series, will make his English-language debut in the next instalment of the Universal franchise, claims The Hollywood Reporter.
Jaa will star alongside Jason Statham, who has been confirmed as the villain in the car heist drama opposite series veterans Vin Diesel and Paul Walker.
As well as being the first English language film Jaa has starred in, Fast and Furious 7 will be his first outing with a major studio.
He said in an email: "I have been a big fan of the Fast and Furious franchise. The films are fast-paced, fun and keep the audience involved.
"There is a great mix of humour and action, something I really appreciate. There is no better film to be involved in for a first Us studio production."

More than eight months after principal photography began, the questions are starting to pop up with increasing regularity: Where is Tony Jaa's Tom Yum Goong 2? And why has not a single scrap of footage or even any still images been released yet? The answer, in short, is get ready to wait a while longer. The originally planned 2012 release date? Not going to happen. No chance. For those unfamiliar with the back story, there is quite a lot riding on this film both for Jaa and production house Sahamongkol Film. Jaa's directorial debut, Ong Bak 2, was an utter disaster behind the scenes to the degree that control of the production was taken away from the star deep into production and handed to Panna...

In many ways "Bangkok Knockout" is the perfect film for Fantasia (or any other similarly themed genre fest), but let's be clear: the latest from "Ong Bak 2" and "Ong Bak 3" director Panna Rittikrai is terrible in almost every conceivable technical, narrative and aesthetic category. It's atrociously acted, with a derivative, absurd story shot with no real skill except in making sure that when two characters are speaking to each other, they are both in the frame. However, when it's time for the fights--which are frequent, exciting and amazingly staged, Rittikrai is firmly in his element and the audience…...

Good news for fans of Muay Thai action flicks: the formerly retired Tony Jaa has emerged from his self-imposed spiritual retreat, ready to kick ass on screen once again. Not only that, but he is re-uniting with the director that helped catapult him to fame with the martial arts movie Ong-Bak. That's right, Prachya Pinkaew and Tony Jaa have put aside their differences to start work on Tom Yum Goong 2, the sequel to the film that was released in North America as The Protector. Fight choreographer Panna Rittikrai is also on board and if that wasn't enough, Chocolate star Jija Yanin will supposedly have a significant role as well. Plus it will be shot in 3D. What more could you ask for? The announcement seems like it is coming not a moment too soon for Prachya Pinkaew, whose U.S. debut Elephant White is going direct-to-dvd next month and looks pretty questionable [1]. Of course,...

If you're Tony Jaa and you're looking to rebuild your career after the very public meltdown and collapse that was the production of Ong Bak 2 - find the details on that here - how do you go about doing it?Well, one possible solution - a very good possible solution - is to get the hell out of Thailand to a nation where memories are a little shorter and where the masses did not witness your televised breakdown. Then pair yourself up with an acknowledged master, cut out all the outside distractions and focus on simply doing what you do best. And that appears to be exactly what Jaa is now doing.Details are sketchy but according to reliable sources, with Jaa now out of...

I love Tony Jaa. He's a goddamn dynamo. When Jackie Chan lost his balls to the same kiddie grinder that claimed Eddie Murphy and Ice Cube, I fretted that there'd be a lack of a does-his-own-stunts acrobatic martial artist. And along came Jaa. Watching him flip around and smash things with his elbows and knees, careening off temple walls and marketplace stalls like Tinkerbell on meth, it's a motherfucking joy to behold. But somewhere between Ong Bak: the Thai Warrior and this film, he burned out in a big fucking way. The slip started under extreme pressure during the filming of the second film, which I despite a confubbling plot I adored, merely because Jaa ended the film kicking the shit out of All The Ninjas. All one hundred thousand. But in the latest installment, Jaa's lost prince warrior is beaten and broken, and infused with the noble spirit of Buddha,...

One thing is perfectly clear with Ong Bak 3: The Final Battle, which is an adequate follow-up to the superior Ong Bak 2: The Beginning (here), is that Tony Jaa is the most thrilling, dynamic martial art film star since Bruce Lee.
I’ve seen them all, and while through their longevity in a different film world than Jaa, it’s clear that Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Donny Yen, and others have better well-rounded films, their talents seem so stiff compared to the grace and ferociousness of Tony Jaa. Ong Bak 3 also has a bit of sadness to it, with life imitating art and visa versa. Jaa’s character of Tien seeks pure enlightenment or Arahat after facing much punishment, anger, rage, by the end of Ong Bak 2, which is very curious as Tony Jaa has sought ordination to be a monk in a Buddhist temple in Surin,...

To tell you all the truth, I was flirting with just a Top 5. 2010 certainly hasn’t been the best year at movies, but as the year is coming to a close, and I recall over the 150 films I had seen – either theatrically, video-on-demand, screeners, or direct-to-dvd – I started to find that maybe my initial reaction to 2010 had been short-sighted. Also, Killer Film is a genre site, “the genre site of awesome” I like to say, so don’t expect to see Toy Story 3 (here) on my list, although I loved it, and no The Social Network (here) because that film doesn’t fit our new style and well, I just didn’t dig it like those other stuffy critics.
My list is fun, a list of 10 films that will be etched into what 2010 was, so let’s get cracking:

Since his arrival on the martial arts scene doubling for Robin Shou in Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, Tony Jaa (born Panom Worawit) has made a lasting impression. Legend has it he attracted serious interest from the director Prachya Pinkaew (The Protector) purely on the merits of his demo reel, and Pinkaew was so impressed that he created 2003’s Ong-bak to showcase Jaa’s abilities. Worawit rebranded himself Tony Jaa with a view to taking his unique blend of action in an international direction. It became Jaa’s breakout film — although sometimes criticized as simply showing off — featuring his inventive moves done without wires or the assistance of CGI, which led to inevitable comparisons to Bruce Lee and attracted considerable international attention.

Tony Jaa’s “Ong Bak 3″ is kinda like Mel Gibson’s “Passion of the Christ”, except with more Thai food and less crazy. Magnet Releasing has the film scheduled for limited release on January 14, 2011, though at this point if you haven’t seen it yet on DVD, you’re just not trying very hard. In any case, check out the latest U.S. trailer for the film below. New to trailers is the third and final installment of the awesomely adrenaline rushing Ong Back. Written, directed, and starring Tony Jaa; Ong Bak 3 is the last film under his belt before committing himself to life as a monk. With Tony Jaa committing himself to becoming a Buddhist monk [1] for the foreseeable future, it has fallen to others to carry on the future of Thai action cinema. While there doesn't seem to be any one star standing up to take his place, aside from maybe JeeJa Yanin (Chocolate), legendary director and action choreographer Panna Rittikrai is attracting a lot of attention with an ambitious new film called Bko: Bangkok Knockout. Magnet Releasing just acquired the U.S. rights to the film and plan to bring it to North America sometime next year. The movie combines a variety of martial arts styles, from Muay Thai to Capoeira, Kung Fu and Tai Chi, with a simple plot involving a group of "fight club pals" seeking to rescue a kidnapped friend. Rittikrai is credited as the co-director of Ong Bak 2 and 3, but he also directed the 2004 film Born to Fight, and co-ordinated stunts for Ong-Bak,...

Ong Bak 3
Directed by: Tony Jaa, Panna Rittikrai
Starring: Tony Jaa, Sorapong Chatree
Rating: R
Release Date: January 14, 2011
Trailer Score: 6/10
My Thoughts: The trailer swings pretty uncontrollably from awesome to painful and whenever there’s even a hint of awkwardness, it usually points to more bad things than good. Except, I am a slavish devotee to Ong Bak: Thai Warrior and Ong Bak 2 was fine, too – Tony Jaa is supernatural and we don’t need a well-constructed script for him to impress the hell out of everyone…oh, and it opens on my birthday. So it doesn’t really signify that the trailer is cheesy in parts, badly directed in parts, and openly worshipful of its star/writer/co-director Tony Jaa, because I’m still going to see it. Not only that, I’ll probably make my friends take me for my birthday, so fun can be had by all.

Thai martial arts wizard and all round enigma Tony Jaa returns with “Ong Bak 3”, the second sequel to his bone crunching 2003 hit original. As with 2008’s “Ong Bak: The Beginning” Jaa again takes up the directorial reigns as well as scripting and producing, along with mentor and series collaborator Panna Rittikrai. The film is another historical effort, following themes of karma and destiny as Jaa’s warrior comes to terms with his fate while battling villains in a series of wild set pieces. With his apparently having given up his cinematic career to become a Buddhist Monk, the film not only provides a conclusion to the era spanning trilogy, but also offers what may well be one of the last chances for fans to see him kicking ass in his trademark unfettered style. The film picks up where part 2 left off, with Jaa’s revenge seeking warrior Tien being captured by his nemesis,...

My Thoughts: I’ll do a lot of things in the name of martial arts flicks. No, seriously, I even took a class in college on kung fu movies, but there are some times when a line must be drawn. Even as a huge fan of the first Ong Bak and Tony Jaa’s incredible skills as a martial artists, Ong Bak 3 holds little to no appeal. Hell, even with the second one when they tried to make Tony Jaa’s character into some profound being, I wasn’t buying it. I’m just hoping that this will have enough action to make it worthwhile, but judging from this teaser trailer, I’m still a little worried. I don’t know who they’re trying to...

Tony Jaa is back! Yes, the man who jumps through barbed wire hoops feet first and can scale walls like Spider-Man returns to our screens with Ong Bak 3. He’s wrote the script, directed it and will probably “write the theme tune, sing the theme tune”. Okay, maybe not.

It is no secret that I was disappointed with “Ong Bak 2”, though I’ve encountered fans of the sequel. While their points are certainly valid, I’ve watched the movie a couple of times, and it simply doesn’t do it for me, even with the epic fight sequences. Star Tony Jaa ruined his relationship with “Ong Bak” director Prachya Pinkaew by demanding that he direct the sequel. And production of “Ong Bak 3” was, well, a disaster. The film was quickly cobbled together from an inferior script, and Jaa famously had a meltdown in the middle of shooting, rode and elephant into the jungle, shaved his head, and hid out with some monks for a couple of months. At one point he appeared on television in tears, vowing to finish the film. (Twitch breaks it all down for you if you want the gory details.) I haven’t...

The third instalment of Tony Jaa’s Ong Bak reboot is heading for release Stateside next month, and if you’ve read our review of the film you’ll already have a good idea of our views. Heavy (at times) on the action, light on narrative with a love interest thrown in for good measure its a mess of a movie. But hey, that’s our opinion. Watch Tony Jaa epically kick some ass in this new trailer for Ong Bak 3! This trailer is shows off some great fight sequences from the new sequel. Tony Jaa's Ong Bak 3 is a train wreck, frankly, but it's now a train wreck with a trailer that casts it in the best possible light. Heck, the new Us trailer for the film is so good that it actually made me wonder briefly if I'd gotten things wrong when I first saw the picture (I got over that quickly) and it managed to do that without including Dan Chupong in any significant way. Which is impressive since Chupong has all the best bits in the movie.
For those unfamiliar with the behind the scenes saga of Ong Bak 2 and Ong Bak 3 - a story that began with the star destroying his relationship with Ong Bak director Prachya Pinkaew when he insisted on directing the sequel himself, then melting down and hiding in the jungle for two months, then shaving his head and joining the monkhood...

Director: Tony Jaa & Panna Rittikrai. Review: Adam Wing. It’s very hard to ignore a troubled shoot like this, but the Ong Bak sequels have lurched from one disaster to the next and the evidence is there for all to see. Lets get one thing straight from the start though, Ong Bak 2 was never a true sequel to the smash hit movie that introduced Tony Jaa to the world. Glad we cleared that one up. Now that Tony Jaa has put his cinematic career aside for his spiritual pursuit (he's already become a Buddhist monk), Ong Bak 3 could well be the last screen appearance for the international martial arts sensation. A tragic loss to the big screen if you ask me, despite his failure to reach the dizzy heights of Ong Bak and The Warrior King, Tony Jaa is still a talent we can’t afford to lose.

Ong Bak was released in 2003 and was a hit with audiences in Thailand and The West and also received mostly favourable reviews from critics. A sequel was announced (although the film ultimately became a sort of prequel) and was released in 2008. This was another box office success although critics were less enamoured with Ong Bak 2.
Ong Bak 3 picks the story of Tien (Tony Jaa) from Ong Bak 2 and opens with him in chains. He is then tortured for what feels like an incredibly long time before spending an even longer time recovering from this torture. Although a little unclear in the film it actually seems like Tien dies and is then reborn. This torture and subsequent rebirth is most likely inspired by Jaa’s interests in Buddhism but it also brings to mind the version of a particular story brought to film by Mel Gibson.

The folks over at Magnet Releasing have been busy little beavers lately, having recently acquired the rights to a load of interesting titles. Their queue of upcoming films includes the comically renamed “Chawz”, the latest Korean all-star serial killer joint “I Saw the Devil”, and “Ong Bak 3”, which everyone hopes will be better than “Ong Bak 2”. That’s a solid list. And now they’ve added Takeshi Miike’s samurai remake “13 Assassins” to their roster. The film premiered earlier this year in Venice, and also played at Fantastic Fest and the Toronto International Film Festival. Based on the 1963 film of the same name, “Assassins,” set in Japan in 1844, centers on a samurai (played by Koji Yakusho) who brings together a baker’s dozen of killers to assassinate the shogun’s brother. Magnet, the genre offshoot of Magnolia Pictures, will unleash “13 Assassins” in the Us in early 2011. There is...

It's an ongoing debate among my friends and I which is the better Tony Jaa film, Ong Bak, The Protector or Ong Bak 2. And by "better film" we clearly mean which has the better action, as the plots of any of these movies are worse than most Atari games (which are ironically now all being turned into feature films). But after the abrupt ending of Ong Bak 2, we knew that Jaa would return in a new installment, which I'm presuming was filmed immediately after 2 as latest reports have...
