Florence's beloved Verdi sports her sensible chapeau.
Florence Foster Jenkins was a woman of grand exuberance. She’s mostly remembered for her terrible voice, which I suppose is fair. It’s worth noting, however, that she didn’t exactly intend to make comedy albums. It was her irrepressible love of music that drove her to the stage, the recording studio and, by way of generations of blithe dinner parties, into the 21st century.
With that in mind, a Meryl Streep movie seems like an inevitable conclusion. Florence Foster Jenkins’s director (Stephen Frears) and screenwriter (Nicholas Martin) clearly understand both pieces of the character, her fervent fandom and her wobbly voice. In fact, they so thoroughly embrace her passion for music that they suggest it’s what killed her.
But I’m getting ahead of myself. Before Streep...

Ruth Wilson didn't get to go to her first Golden Globes. A nominee in 2008 for Jane Eyre, the actress was foiled by the writers' strike, which reduced the ceremony to a news conference that she watched from a hotel bar. Seven years later, she returned for the ceremony—and won. "It was nice enough just to be there this time," Wilson says the morning after she bested Viola Davis, Claire Danes, Robin Wright, and Julianna Margulies to win Best Actress in a Drama Series for her role on Showtime's The Affair. "I was up against those incredible actresses; I didn't expect to win at all.

Ruth Wilson is a potential Golden Globes contender for her performance as a married woman who becomes involved with a married man (Dominic West) in Showtime's "The Affair," but even though the actress has been nominated before – for the TV miniseries "Jane Eyre" in 2007 – she never got to attend the event. She's played a seductive killer, a damaged prostitute, and an anguished schizophrenic. Does Ruth Wilson never fancy doing something lighter? As she makes her directing debut, she talks to Andrew Dickson
"Um," says Ruth Wilson worriedly, her brow furrowing and her long limbs coiling in embarrassment around her chair. "I am a bit of a control freak. Well, not really. Not totally." She halts. "Ok, I am a bit." Blimey. All I've asked is whether she's ever performed drunk. She seems scandalised by the notion. "No, no," she says. "The idea of not being in control of your faculties, I don't think so. Too much responsibility. Too scared!"
Fear isn't a concept you associate with Wilson, who has made her reputation in some unflinching roles: a sensuous Stella in A Streetcar Named Desire, a psychologically harrowing Karin in Ingmar Bergman's Through a Glass Darkly, Anna Christie in Eugene O'Neill's...

'Until a few years ago, I was endlessly playing villainous, smug, posh guys on telly'
Your parents [Maggie Smith and Robert Stephens] were both famous actors. Was following in their footsteps inevitable?
No, my parents didn't particularly encourage me initially. They knew how hard the profession is: just because they'd been successful didn't mean I would be. They weren't like, "I tell you what, why don't we all do a production together?" They said, "You're on your own." I'm really grateful: it made me get out there and hone my taste.
What was your big breakthrough?
Playing Coriolanus at the RSC. I was about 25, and the play had never been done there before with anybody of that age. It got rid of everybody's preconceptions about Coriolanus being a 50-year-old fascist dressed in leather who likes beating people up.
Do you suffer for your art?
No. First and foremost, it's a way of putting bread on the table.

Ruth Wilson might not yet be familiar to most people who see The Lone Ranger in theaters over the Fourth of July weekend, but the British actress is already well established in her native England, having starred on the BBC's Luther and several critically acclaimed miniseries, like Jane Eyre. We recently sat down with Ruth in Santa Fe, Nm, to discuss the thrill of working alongside Johnny Depp in her first big American film and the "quirkiness" that leading man Armie Hammer brought to the project. Ruth also filled us in on the most terrifying stunt she took on for the role: dangling upside down from a moving train.

Will a western work? That’s the question with Disney’s The Lone Ranger, which arrives this summer as the most expensive cowboy film in history. The trio behind the film — producer Jerry Bruckheimer, director Gore Verbinski and star Johnny Depp — are accustomed to genre skepticism, they heard the chorus of doubters when they salvaged the swashbuckler genre from the briny depths with the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

Directors' group to investigate after Cannes film festival snubs women for Palme d'Or prize
The woman behind the hugely successful new BBC drama Parade's End is leading a campaign to give female directors a better deal in television.
Susanna White, whose adaptation of Ford Madox Ford's four-volume novel is winning widespread acclaim, is a member of Directors UK, a group representing British film and television directors, which has set up an all-women working party to examine the difficulties experienced by aspiring female directors. The move is partly a response to the fact that no women were entered for the Palme d'Or at this year's Cannes film festival.
White told the Observer that she had only broken into the top ranks of directors with extreme difficulty. "I think my journey has been a very, very, slow one."
Welcoming the new focus, she said: "I'm very keen for this to happen.

So, writer-director Gary Ross, having helped make "The Hunger Games" into a gigantic hit, has decided to move on to new pastures. As we reported last week, Ross will be focusing on a new project, and after a few days, Lionsgate officially confirmed (admitted) he will not be helming "Catching Fire," with both the studio and the director issuing formal statements.
Which leaves Lionsgate needing to find someone to replace him, and find someone soon. They have a script from "Slumdog Millionaire" writer Simon Beaufoy, a release date of November 22, 2013, and a scheduling window they need to hit before Jennifer Lawrence has to move on to shooting the "X-Men: First Class" sequel. With all that in mind, we've picked out five names who we think would be good candidates to fill the hole left by Ross on "Catching Fire." Bear in mind, given the studio won't likely be spending big cash on a new helmer,...

Disney's biggest gamble of 2013, Gore Verbinski's The Lone Ranger, has officially gone into production. There was a point I didn't think this movie would actually happen, but here it is. Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer will lead the pack of actors into the wild west.
The reason I say this movie is a gamble is because Disney is spending $216 million dollars to make the movie, and no Western in the history of cinema has ever made that much money. The highest grossing western of all time is Dances With Wolves, and that only brought in $184 million. I can't believe Disney is pumping this kind of money into a western, because I don't think it's going to make that kind of money back in theaters. Hell, Favreau's Cowboy & Aliens only made a little over $100 million and that mixed both sci-fi and western elements! That should have been a blockbuster, and it wasn't.

After weeks of drama, intense negotiation, and will-they-won’t-they whispers, “The Lone Ranger” is officially back on at Disney. From the outside looking in, it doesn’t seem as though Disney really won this financial battle with Gore Verbinski and Jerry Bruckheimer. They wanted that budget of $230 million substantially reduced, but capitulated at last to Verbinski and Bruckheimer’s final tally of $215 million. Verbinski, Bruckheimer and Depp all reduced their fees, shortened the shoot, and trimmed the production budget, but it still seems like an awfully steep price for the studio to pay. I’m not at all sure that includes marketing, after all.Depp and Armie Hammer remain attached to play Tonto and the Lone Ranger, respectively, and Deadline reports that Ruth Wilson has joined the cast as the female lead. Wilson is a brilliant and lovely actress, yet another British star that hasn’t made the leap across the sea,...

Jane Eyre director makes logical step from period drama to film about space-age assassin
Cary Fukunaga is to follow up his forthcoming big-screen take on Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre with a science-fiction thriller about a hitman tumbling through space, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Spaceless, based on an original screenplay by Jeff Vintar, has Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski on board as producer and has been green-lit by Universal Studios. It concerns an assassin who wakes to find himself floating through space in a suit that is running out of air, fitted with a computer designed to keep him company until he expires. The last thing he remembers is breaking into a space station to carry out a hit, but is he really about to die? Could he be trapped in an artificial reality or simply experiencing the effects of madness?

Disney, Jerry Bruckheimer and Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy director Gore Verbinski are really, truly making a new Lone Ranger, in which Johnny Depp will star as a sort of revisionist Tonto, with Armie Hammer (The Social Network, J. Edgar) playing [1] the titular ranger. Now two Western veterans, Dwight Yoakam and Barry Pepper, are in talks for the film. Just for good measure Helena Bonham Carter is likely to join the cast, thereby making Lone Ranger a bridge between Johnny Depp's major movie worlds, Tim Burton and Pirates of the Caribbean. Variety [2] says "Yoakam would play Butch Cavendish, leader of the Cavendish gang and the pic’s primary villain, while Pepper would play Captain J. Fuller, the leader of the seventh cavalry. Carter is still in early discussions — but if a deal closes, she would play the colorful madam of a local brothel." Also in the cast are Tom Wilkinson,...

Time for a little The Lone Ranger update. Finally, we’re here to add one lovely lady to this long-waited project, and trust us, this sounds quite interesting! British actress Ruth Wilson is currently in negotiations to star as the female lead in the upcoming Gore Verbinski‘s project that we already wrote about.
If negotiations work out, Wilson will join the cast that already includes Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer.
Yeah, I’m sure you all agree this cast is great. As we previously reported, Armie Hammer is on board to star as the Lone Ranger, Johnny Depp will be his side-kick Tonto, while Wilson comes in to play a character named Rebecca.
According to Deadline, Wilson, who was nominated for a Golden Globe for a TV mini-series Jane Eyre back in 2008, beat out Jessica Chastain (best known from The Tree of Life) and Abbie Cornish (who we all...

[1] Ruth Wilson will be breaking into the boys' club as the female lead of Gore Verbinski's The Lone Ranger, starring Armie Hammer as the Texas ranger and Johnny Depp as his sidekick Tonto. Although Wilson's name may be unfamiliar to most Americans, she's known in the UK for her work on the BBC's Luther and the Masterpiece Theatre miniseries Jane Eyre. Wilson was selected over Jessica Chastain and Abbie Cornish, who were also being considered for the part, and is currently in negotiations. Very few details have been revealed about her character, named Rebecca. Unlike the earlier versions of the property, Verbinski's Lone Ranger will be told from Tonto's perspective -- "Don Quixote told from Sancho Panza’s point of view," as Verbinski has described [2] it. The film will hit theaters December 21 [3]. [Deadline [4]] After the jump, B.J. Novak joins The Dictator opposite Sacha Baron Cohen a.k.a. Borat, and...
