- TriviaBaby Gerald, Luigi Risotto, Assistant Superintendent Leopold, and Flanders' parents make their first appearances on the show in this episode. Leopold and Luigi were designed by David Silverman, one of the show's directors. Bob Anderson thought Luigi was one of the funniest characters on the show when he first read Luigi's lines in the script during a table read of the episode. When Anderson skimmed through the script and saw Luigi's lines, he said he "frightened Julie Kavner because I was laughing to myself, but trying to keep the laughter in because it was so damn funny."
- GoofsMrs. Krabappel feeds Santa's Little Helper cookies that Martin calls "Raisin Roundies." Raisins are incredibly toxic to dogs. It is very likely Santa's Little Helper would have died in the closet before he smelled the horse meat.
- Quotes
Principal Skinner: Now I... I finally have time to do what I've always wanted: write the great American novel. Mine is about a futuristic amusement park where dinosaurs are brought to life through advanced cloning techniques. I call it "Billy and the Cloneasaurus."
Apu: Oh, you have got to be kidding sir. First you think of an idea that has already been done. Then you give it a title that nobody could possibly like. Didn't you think this through...
[fade to later]
Apu: ... it was on the bestseller list for eighteen months! Every magazine cover had...
[later]
Apu: ... one of the most popular movies of all time, sir! What were you thinking?
[pause]
Apu: I mean, thank you, come again.
- Crazy creditsBart's chalkboard gag for this episode, the 100th of the series, reads: "I will not celebrate meaningless milestones."

It's also probably one of the funniest episodes too, I laughed my ass off throughout the episode, the jokes always landed.
This episode was amazing, and I really appreciated how it highlighted Bart's softer side. The way he befriended Principal Skinner was touching.
I liked the rhythm and style of the episode, the character development was handled brilliantly, and I also think this is one of the only episodes we see Agnes being nice to Skinner.
The writers did a fantastic job of balancing humor with touching moments, making it not just funny but also emotionally satisfying.
