Hilarious first episode to a deliriously illogical Saturday morning cartoon show
Lex Luthor and the Legion of Doom have a foolproof scheme for eliminating the SuperFriends. Luthor has invented a dream machine, whose red beam will find the SuperFriends, wherever they are, and cause them to "dream" that they are committing various robberies. Only the "dreams" are real.
That night, Superman steals all the gold from Fort Knox. Batman and Robin loot the U.S. Mint. Black Vulcan removes the priceless treasures from King Tarom's tomb. Flash steals the crown jewels. Wonder Woman lassos the world famous paintings in Paris. (Who knew that a rope would be the most effective way of removing them en masse from the wall?)
What weird dreams, they all say in the morning. Only they discover something that turns their dreams into nightmares (to paraphrase Hawkman). They open a secret panel at the Hall of Justice - behind it is all their stolen loot!
Well, there's nothing left for them to do but turn themselves in until they can figure out this mess. The chief of police puts them in a jail cell and relies on their personal integrity not to break out. Only that's not the chief of police! And that's not a lady cop next to him! That's Bizarro and Cheetah in disguise!
It's time to get the hell out of that cage. But it's too late. The cage emits yellow rays that freeze their muscles. Worse, the cage is rocket-powered; and Bizarro sends it hurtling toward the sun. "Holy hotfoot, Batman!" cries Robin. The SuperFriends will all be burnt to a crisp.
Luckily, Superman but no. "Without the use of my muscles," he says, "my super strength is useless." Will the SuperFriends escape?
Meanwhile, Brainiac (who never speaks in this episode) has helped Bizarro and Cheetah create a device that will turn everyone in the world into Bizarros and Cheetahs. All these ersatz Bizarros and Cheetahs become minions who commit profitable robberies for the Legion of Doom. One wonders, though, why they even bother with money when they have complete power over everyone on earth anyway.
Then again, it's unclear whether they've really made minions of everyone. The SuperFriends eventually return to earth. (Oops, I gave away that they escape.) They round up all "Bizarro- and Cheetah-faced citizens." If everyone is a Bizarro- and Cheetah-faced citizen, what's the point?
There's still more deliriously illogical fun where that came from.. Highlights: Lex Luthor introduces the Legion of Doom to one another. Batman's butler, Alfred, makes a nifty entrance.
