Very wonderful drama - how I wish the BBC would issue a DVD

A very beautiful piece about a young man coming to terms with his trans-gendered state. Relatively authentic and sympathetic in its treatment of trans-gendered people - it would be a long time before anything as good was done again. The final sequence where the central character finally finds himself and is able to hit back at his tormentors at work was wonderful. How I wish the BBC would issue a DVD of this. I'd love to see it again - it was a play which deeply influenced my own life.

This was a very radical piece at the time. Despite a few sensationalised pieces about the world of trans-gendered people most were based on little knowledge. Even Solom appeared to be quite authentic and I recall it was based ( it was claimed ) on a real transsexuals experiences before coming out.

Warning: Spoilers
Aaah...there used to be some wonderful dramas on 'Play for Today.' I remember seeing 'Even Solomon' back in 1979. I knew little or nothing about trans-gendered individuals and it was unusual for the subject to be portrayed on TV at that time - society wasn't nearly so open and upfront as it is now about such issues. A beautiful and sympathetically written drama and I found myself rooting for the main character all the way through - I wanted him to beat the bullies and stand his ground, and I've never forgotten the brilliant scene in the bank towards the end when he finally does. It would be great see it again and I don't know why the BBC haven't released some of these vintage plays on DVD. Maybe one day...
