"(A Life Without Limits) The Making of The Aviator" is a back-slapping "Behind the Scenes" documentary short made for the 2-disc DVD release of "The Aviator" (2004). Star/co-producer Leonardo DiCaprio (who played Howard Hughes) and the higher-billed supporting performers share their thoughts on the film. And, hey… they're all good. Everyone, it is revealed, was the director's first choice for their roles. With Martin Scorsese behind the camera, that's easy to believe.

It is interesting to learn that Mr. DiCaprio had a personal fascination with the playboy aviator, after reading a book about Hughes. No counterarguments are given for the filmmakers' decisions (they are "genius"). It would have been nice to see some support for the film's casting and elevation of Katharine Hepburn and Ava Gardner as Hughes lovers. And, what was meant by the film's opening segment, which suggests an incestuous relationship between Hughes and his mother.

*** The Making of The Aviator (5/14/05) Martin Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio, John Logan, Cate Blanchett
