I saw a documentary about the 1950s quiz show scandal as well as the 1994 drama starring Ralph Fiennes, so this installment of "The American Experience" was very familiar to me. However, despite this, I STILL found the episode exciting and fascinating to watch.
In the 1950s, for a time, quiz shows were THE most popular television shows on prime time TV. It's hard to imagine this now...and the show paints a picture of what caused their downfall. Apparently, the shows were rigged and the winners only won in many cases because of cheating orchestrated by the shows' producers. The steps leading to this AND the truth eventually coming out are the subject of the show.
It really helped that the whistleblower, Herb Stempel, was alive and contributed to the episode. It also was well constructed and never dull. Overall, one of the better installments of a great TV documentary series.
