Composer Bruce Lynch employs some clever scoring to differentiate the Rangers in each of their stories about their recent battle, with each represented by a different instrument and musical style. Jack is backed by electric guitar against 1970s jazz funk, reminiscent of Isaac Hayes's score for Shaft. Sky is backed by harmonica in what might loosely be called a cowboy style. Bridge is backed with a triangle in a Henry Mancini/Pink Panther-like swaggering jazz band setting. Z is represented by Spanish guitar in a studio orchestra for a slightly Latin flavor. Syd is flat-out represented by celesta in what is unquestionably "The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" from "The Nutcracker" by Tchaikovsky.
This story features the Rashomon effect, named after the 1950 Akira Kurosawa film which was based on two stories, "Rashomon" and "In a Grove" ("Yabu no naka"), by Ryünosuke Akutagawa. In effect, an event is observed by various individuals whose subjectivity causes them to tell conflicting versions of it, bringing into question humanity's ability to perceive and convey objective truth.
