- At the turn of the 21st century, a religious fanatic enlisted by the Millennium Group resurrects four members of the group as zombies to bring about the end of the world. Mulder and Scully enlist the help of Frank Black to help stop the apocalyptic designs of the Millennium Group.—Muldernscully
- After a funeral, a man sneaks back in, opens the casket, removes the clothes from the corpse and puts them on, leaving a cellphone behind in the casket and praying all the while. Later, in the cemetery, his phone rings. He takes a shovel and goes to the grave.
Scully and Mulder are called to the grave site, where the open grave shows signs of a live burial, although Scully is skeptical.
An FBI meeting takes place to determine the reason for the grave robbery. Mulder suggests that the motive was necromancy, pointing out that a necromancer would wear the clothes of the deceased man. Skinner suggests that former FBI agents in an organization known as the Millennium Group could be involved. Four former FBI agents have had their graves robbed.
Mulder and Scully visit a psychological profiler, Frank Black, who has checked himself into a mental hospital. He refuses to help, saying he's trying to put his life back together.
The necromancer has a flat tire. A policeman stops to help and notices the smell of death. The necromancer entices the dead man in the trunk to attack and kill the policeman. When they arrive on the scene, Mulder and Scully find a verse from the Book of Revelations in his mouth and return to Black. He associates the four men with the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, and explains that they all killed themselves with the plan of being resurrected. He then gives a detailed profile of the necromancer and comments that he will go back to the policeman in the morgue when he realizes the body has been discovered. Scully decides to go to the morgue while Mulder searches for the necromancer. He asks her to make sure the staples are not removed from the corpse's mouth, but she is too late - an autopsy is already being performed and the staples and salt have been removed. The doctor is attacked by the corpse. Scully arrives on the scene and shoots the corpse three times without effect as the necromancer looks on, but he takes Scully's gun and shoots the corpse through the head, rescuing her.
Meanwhile, Mulder visits a gated compound outside of cellphone range. He finds large bags of salt in a garbage can, and scales the fence. As he searches the house, the necromancer returns. He locks Mulder in the basement where he is attacked by several animated corpses. He makes a circle of salt to keep them away and shoots one in the head.
Black then shows up at the compound. He volunteers to replace the fourth corpse, who has been shot by Mulder, and the necromancer gives him a gun to shoot himself. Instead, he turns the gun on the necromancer, ties him up and goes to the basement to rescue Mulder. Scully also arrives on the scene and between the three of them, they manage to overpower the corpses.
Black goes home with his daughter, and Scully and Mulder watch the 2000 New Year's ball drop. At midnight, they kiss.
