• Policeman : Where are your licenses?

  [Pigling gives the policeman his license, Alexander gives the policeman what looks like a piece of paper all crumpled] 

  Alexander : There you are, Mr. Policeman. I knew it was somewhere.

  Policeman : [looks at it]  What's this? 'Two-and-a-half conversation sweeties at three farthings'? This ain't the license.

  Alexander : [goes confused, searches his pockets]  I had one. Indeed, I HAD, Mr. Policeman.

  Policeman : It's not likely they'd let you start without. I'm passing the farm. You may walk with me.

  [the policeman and Alexander head back to the farm] 

  Pigling Bland : Can... Can I come back, too?

  Policeman : I see no reason, young sir. Your paper's all right.

  Pigling Bland : [sadly]  But I don't want to go all on my own.

  [Pigling leaves]
