Futuristic creepiness
"Hi Tech House of Horrors" stood out to me on first viewing many years ago, like when 'What's New Scooby Doo' started airing. Standing out particularly was the setting (very different for the franchise at this point), the truly creepy voice and laugh and the opening. Absolutely loved the idea for the story, again pretty original for Scooby Doo at this point. On first watch, the show was a mixed bag but this was one of the "loved it" episodes.
Recently rewatched the whole of 'What's New Scooby Doo' a couple of months ago and "Hi Tech House of Horrors" was actually even better on rewatch. More was gotten out of the story, including the latter stages being easier to comprehend, and what stood out on first viewing were even better on this viewing. As far as a mostly solid, but not consistent as the previous season second season goes, "Hi Tech House of Horrors" is in the better half.
The animation is as polished, vibrant and atmospheric as ever. The house is like a character inside and out. Also standing out are the Tex Avery like reactions. The music is not discordant with the fast paced action and appeals on its own. Have always liked the theme song, even if it is not one of the franchise's most iconic.
Did find the chase scene not the most inspired ones in the world and it is not one of the best or most memorable of the show. Especially when compared to the rest of "Hi Tech House of Horrors".
Writing intrigues and entertain, Shaggy and Scooby don't disappoint. The story is very different for the show and the franchise in general, and is every bit as imaginative in execution. Right from the get go, with one of the most unsettling openings of Season 2. The house is incredibly creepy, with a very nightmarish voice. The ending wasn't expected, personal opinion of it having seen people feeling it was obvious, and was also different for the show and franchise. It is also one of the few climaxes where there is actually genuine tension.
All the gang are on top form, it is very clear how much they care for Daphne, and the supporting characters are also great, the obvious standout being the house. Jeeves is one cool robot. As is the voice acting, that voice and laugh for the house still gives me chills.
Great episode all in all. 9/10.
