Charlie knocks on the residence door as Leo & Toby need to speak with the President. Meanwhile the Bartlets are having a romantic evening. Abby, sitting on the couch, covers herself with large sofa pillows. Toby remarks "Good evening, Mrs. Bartlet, that's a nice housecoat you're wearing." An homage to Eddie Haskell from Leave It to Beaver.
When Leo & Jordan (John Spencer & Joanna Gleason) are dancing the song playing is "Someone to Watch Over Me". This song was also featured in Mr. Holland's Opus (1995) where she played Gov. Gertrude Lang.
The US Navy banned smoking on all of its submarines in 2010. Before that though, there was only one designated place on a submarine where a sailor could smoke, referred to as the "smoking pit, which was usually down near the engine room. Jack (Christian Slater)'s reasoning for a $400 ash tray (that it prevents shattered glass from "flying into the eyes of the navigator and the officer of the deck" if there was a torpedo hit) makes no sense, because smoking up near the navigator or officer of the deck would not be permitted in the first place....only down in the smoking pit. The episode was filmed in 2002 so would be correct.
President Bartlet (Martin Sheen) tells Abbey he won both North and South Dakota, and then refers to them as "The Badlands". One of Martin Sheen's earliest starring roles was in Badlands (1973).
