Ben in trouble after helping friend
FlushingCaps22 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this recently and thought it an excellent episode in this series.

The main plot features Ben taking a girl he likes to Charlottesville so she can meet with her mother. Her mother was presumed dead by the community, when she actually ran away while the girl was little. She wrote her daughter saying she was passing through on her way to Florida and would like to see her. The girl's father forbids her from even talking about her mother, or seeing boys in any social way. Since Ben doesn't have his driver's license, he borrows John Boy's car after everyone else has gone to bed.

She sneaks out with Ben and has a nice talk with her mother in the hotel restaurant while Ben waits. Unbeknownst to them, a young couple out for fun stumbles on John Boy's car. Seeing the keys in the ignition, the guy wants to go for a ride. He does but hits a parked car causing minor damage. Without stopping, he returns the car in time for Ben and his friend to find it and drive home.

The next morning, a deputy sheriff investigates a report that that vehicle was involved in a hit-and-run accident. With John Boy and John, they see the damage to the right front fender. Ben stands up and admits taking the car, but denies knowing anything about how the dent got there, insisting he wasn't in any accident.

What gets him in deep water is that, because he promised the girl he wouldn't tell about why he took the car, he stubbornly refuses to provide details about his trip, making him look rather guilty.

John Boy tries to talk to the girl but her father chases him away. John Boy then plays detective and learns some of the facts about what Ben did.

Ben finally confesses, and with his father and brother, they confront the girl's father, and she tells all.

The big issue was trusting family members and what to do when you promised someone to keep an important secret.

I thought the story was well written and the characters reacted to the situations in logical, believable ways.

Epilogue
kellielulu20 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The epilogues on The Waltons are something I appreciate more now when I catch a rerun. They are often poignant. This one was very moving.

It's not a particularly unusual story for The Waltons or any tv series. A familiar one of the the child in this case Nancy Madden . Her mother left when Nancy was a baby. The father is strict but we ultimately find out if comes from fear of losing her like they did when her mother left.

Nancy gets Ben to take her to Charlottesville to see her mother. They don't tell anyone for obvious reasons but a tragic situation makes it impossible to keep it a secret. John Boy goes to Charlottesville and pieces it together.

Ben can't make headway with Nancy's dad so John goes with him . Nancy's dad ( Eustace ) is angry then scared he breaks down and reveals it. John helps him Nancy is still there and knows he's raised her and loves her .Nancy and her dad embrace She likes her mother but she loves her father and stays with him. John encourages Eustace to let Nancy be more like the other girls.

The epilogue shows he has and Nancy stays with him dating local boys ( like Ben) but never marries. She takes care of her father until he dies. She lives in the family home.involved in missionary work and the choir. Not everyone is going to make their mark faraway many contribute closer to home and family.

Nancy's Parents Deserve Each Other
janet-conant28 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I won't go into detail about the whole poorly written plot just read the other reviews. I feel really sorry for the poor girl in this episode. She's so desperate to see the mother who left her when she was a baby that she convinces Ben to not only steal John Boy's car and drive without a license but drive her into the big city at night to meet with her self absorbed mother who's passing through on her way to Florida to get married. She then tells Ben not to tell a soul. Why? Her father will lock her up and throw away the key! So girl get away from him, go live with the Waltons. Waite and Thomas were as good as always and Eric Scott held his own.

First off her mother was very reckless to make Nancy find her way to the big city to see her when she could've easily met her at school, or anywhere else on Waltons mountain as she had some money. Nancy is a victim in many ways having a father who thinks she's going to run off like her mother so she becomes a prisoner in her own home. He seems to never have a kind word towards her so when she went to see her mother why didn't she just go with her to Florida and leave that crazy man? Mama didn't ask her to.

Poor Ben is so trusting to forget the keys and then sticks to his promise to not tell anyone even though the car has been in an accident. You never see John Walton so mad at anyone as he yanks Ben by the shirt for being so mouthy and shoves him into the door. Poor Ben, he's so stubborn because he promised Nancy.

What really is hard to swallow is how Nancy has been able to live most of her young life with a man who doesn't let her do anything but go to school. And then all of a sudden he does a 180 and he's good neighbor Sam. The mother was just too much leaving her baby with that guy, running off then expecting her daughter to actually come and meet her. She never gives Ben so much as a thank you for driving Nancy to see her. I'm surprised no one, like Olivia, hasn't reached out in the past to help Nancy cope with that father. Also where was grandma?

Ben Gets In A Jam
nlathy-839-30067728 August 2023
This episode is over plotted and soapy. Seems like too much trouble for someone Ben's age to get in. Would have made more sense to have Jason take John Boy's car. It's not all bad. Unlike the episode where Ben plays detective with John Boy's help , this time it's John Boy looking for clues. The story is too grim. And the characters don't always act in a way that makes sense. Rewrites were needed. Seems like the kind of mood the show would drift into more and more in later seasons. Seems like more of a feel good tone is needed to make these movies work. It's a wonder these boys can get married with all the bad girls they keep coming across. Then again these girls can change for the better. Thank goodness.
