- At a harvest dance in the Appalachian Mountains, Luther Glover happily announces the upcoming union between his daughter Ellie, and Billy Ben Turner. However, there's one person who is not pleased about this coming union, and that is dark-haired Jesse-Belle Stone.
Jesse-Belle then visits a woman known as Granny Hart, who some claim to have healing or helping powers. When it seems that Jesse-Belle has nothing of value for Granny Hart to help her, the desperate young woman pleads to pay any price to have Billy Ben love her again.
Shortly thereafter, Billy Ben soon has eyes only for Jesse-Belle again, but the young woman soon notices other startling changes to herself. While she has longed for Billy Ben's affections towards her, she feels an emptiness in her heart, as if something's been taken from her. As well, when midnight comes around, she turns into a wildcat until daybreak.
Visiting Granny Hart again, the old woman reveals what Jesse-Belle suspected all along: she's a witch, and as payment for her services, she has taken Jesse-Belle's soul and made her a witch as well.
Granny Hart encourages Jesse-Belle to 'take what you bargained for,' and through her emptiness, Jesse-Belle gives in to Billy Ben's request to be married.
Shortly thereafter, Jesse-Belle comes across Ellie Glover, and the two trade sharp remarks with Jesse-Belle cautioning Ellie to be on the lookout for a wildcat in the area. Ellie then explains that her father and several other men including Billy Ben are planning to hunt down and kill the cat later that night.
As darkness settles in, Jesse-Belle's mother finishes hemming her daughter's wedding dress. As they discuss things, Jesse-Belle reveals by accident to her Mother how she made a deal with Granny Hart...a deal she can never be saved from.
Jesse-Belle's mother locks her in her room when the poor girl turns into a wildcat. However, she soon escapes, and ends up in the Glover's barn, spooking a horse and frightening Ellie. Luther and the other men soon arrive, and fire at the wildcat, which vanishes in a cloud of smoke. In the aftermath, Billy Ben finds the ring he gave to Jesse-Belle, and the spell that bewitched him now appears to be broken.
A year soon passes, and Ellie and Billy Ben have resumed their plans to be wed. On the day of the wedding, Jesse-Belle's mother stops by to see Billy Ben with a silver pin that once belonged to Jesse-Belle. When Billy Ben asks why, Jesse-Belle's mother claims that her daughter didn't die, since you can't kill a witch with bullets. She then explains how she saw a toad in her daughter's room, and when attempting to kill it, it turned into a cloud of smoke and floated away.
Billy Ben tries to ignore this, but at the ceremony, he notices a spider crawling on Ellie's veil. After picking it off and holding it in his hand, the insect bursts into a small cloud of smoke and disappears, proof that Jesse-Belle's spirit is still out there, and seems intent to still come between Billy Ben and Ellie.
Returning to their home, the two are further shocked when Ellie attempts to attack Billy, and a Grandfather clock tips over. Billy gives Ellie their Bible and tells her not to leave the house.
Rushing to Granny Hart's, Billy pays her for the secret to kill a witch. Granny Hart explains that Billy will need to make a figure of Jesse-Belle with something she'd worn, before stabbing the figure with something of silver where the heart would be. Billy Ben then goes to Jesse-Belle's mother, who gives him the wedding dress that was meant for her daughter. Before they part, Jesse-Belle's mother begs Billy to remember that her daughter never meant such evil, and that her spirit would be grateful for what he is attempting to do.
Returning to his home, Billy finds Ellie standing outside the house, but his eyes go wide when Jesse-Belle's voice eschews from his wife's mouth, explaining that he'll never be rid of 'her.' Billy Ben then rushes into the house and locks the door. Using a seamstress' mannequin, he puts Jesse-Belle's dress on it, and stabs it with the silver pin Jesse-Belle's mother gave him. As he watches, the figure turns into an image of Jesse-Belle, before collapsing to the floor, leaving the crumpled remains of the poor girl's dress.
Billy Ben returns outside, and finds Ellie back to normal. As they embrace, Ellie notices a shooting star in the sky. According to Ellie, her mother says that a shooting star is a sign that a witch has died. Bily-Ben nodes slowly and lets her back in the house, stopping for an extra minute to watch the star and thinking of Jess-Belle.
