Looney auditions
TheLittleSongbird21 December 2020
The concept of auditioning new characters was quite promising for "New Character Day", although hardly unfamiliar territory. The segment structured 'Tiny Toon Adventures' episodes tend to have three segments, but this time in "New Character Day" there are two, along with a wraparound story, and the two couldn't be more different in story and tone. While not every episode is great, that doesn't stop me from being a fan of 'Tiny Toon Adventures'.

"New Character Day" is not one the best 'Tiny Toon Adventures', a long way from that, but there is enough to it that shows how great the show was at its best and why the show was a personal favourite of all the animated shows of the 90s. The two segments that make it up are "The Roches" and "The Return of Pluck Twacy". It has to be admitted, in my view, that one segment is much better than the other and is one so good that it is difficult to be too hard on "New Character Day".

Was not completely crazy about "The Roches". It was well animated and voiced and it was interesting to see The Roches on characteristic quirky form and in the form of animation. At its best though, the humour is more amusing than hilarious and there could have been more of it. Did find the segment overall on the slightly bland side and Hamton doesn't quite have the same amount of personality of The Roches.

In general, the humour could have been sharper and felt fresher. The wackiness is there but there is not much new here.

Did love the wraparound story though, which did see Buster and Babs in character and with great comic timing (especially Babs) and it was a lot of fun seeing the new auditioning characters. Even if the material is not the most original. Even better is the brilliant homage to 'The Great Piggy Bank Robbery' "The Return of Pluck Twacy". Plucky is the perfect choice for the titular character and the segment is often incredibly funny and with a suspenseful atmosphere.

Animation is vibrantly coloured and beautifully rich in detail, not just the backgrounds but also the expressions and reactions of the characters which are wonderfully looney. The Roches occasionally look a little incomplete. The music is dynamic and characterful as always and the theme song has always brought a smile to my face. Something that was the case when a child and still is now. Most of the characterisation is fine and the voice acting excellent.

Overall, pretty decent. One segment didn't wow me that much, but the other absolutely did and the wraparound story is great fun as well. 7/10

Rare Roches Appearance

Rare Roches appearance with a song I do not recall elsewhere. Cartoon was just meh. They had their usual entrance song along with a new song about being actual roaches. I had not heard that one before.
