- When the Enterprise comes to the rescue of an ambassador and his "mother", Deanna finds herself attracted to him, and seeks to comfort him upon her death.
- The Enterprise comes to the rescue of a transport ship after it is attacked while carrying Ambassador Ves Alkar to a mediation between two constantly warring planetary factions. Alkar asks for another freighter to avoid a military appearance but Admiral Simons agrees security requires that Picard remain his host. Alkar arrives with his 93-year old mother, a witch whose aggression and warnings not to have close contact with Ves are rather scary, as her hateful thoughts are to Troi, but soon she is found dead in his quarters. Dr. Crusher doubts a natural cause of death, but without danger to the ship, Picard must respect the ambassador's objection against an autopsy on traditional grounds. Troi agrees to take part in a ceremony requiring empathy, after which she turns much more emotional, irritated and seductive, even scratching her lover Riker. Troi is also aging rapidly, so now Picard allows an autopsy, which proves the late Sev Maylor is no genetic relative of Alkar, who admits the joining drains the receptacle's life energy so he can do his diplomatic work for peace without his emotions burdening him.—KGF Vissers
- The Enterprise rescues Ambassador Ves Alkar whose transport ship is attacked while en route to sensitive negotiations between warring factions. He's accompanied by his elderly mother who on arrival warns Troi to stay away from him. Troi is frightened by the old woman who soon succumbs to some unknown fate and dies. Ves Alkar admits she was quite ill and now regrets having invited her to accompany him. Dr. Crusher can find no clear cause of death but the ambassador refuses her permission to conduct an autopsy. After Deanna Troi undergoes a severe personality change and rapid aging, it points to Alkar deliberately using Deanna for his own purposes. With Alkar showing no remorse for his actions, Picard and Dr. Crusher devise a means to rescue Troi from an untimely death.—garykmcd
- The Enterprise comes to the rescue of a transport ship after it is attacked (by the Rekags) while carrying Ambassador Ves Alkar (Charles Lucia) to a mediation between two constantly warring planetary factions (The Rekags and the Seronias). The captain of the transport ship transfers his 2 passengers to the Enterprise and asks that they be delivered to their destination. Alkar asks for another freighter to avoid a military appearance to peace negotiations, but Admiral Simons (George Wallace) agrees with Picard that security considerations require that Picard remain his host. The Federation is a party to this peace process as the Rekag Seronia system is on an important trade route, and many Federation ships have been attacked recently.
Alkar arrives with his 93-year old mother Sev Maylor, whose aggression and warnings not to have close contact with Ves are rather scary. Sev tells Troi to stay away from Alkar. Meanwhile Alkar wants Troi to help him with Seronia negotiations once they get there. Sev's hateful thoughts are troubling to Troi, but soon Sev is found dead in his quarters.
Dr. Crusher doubts a natural cause of death, but without danger to the ship, Picard must respect the ambassador's objection against an autopsy on traditional grounds. Troi agrees to take part in a ceremony with Alkar requiring empathy (During this ceremony both of them hold one sacred stone each and at the end of the ceremony Alkar transfer the energy of his stone into Deanna's), after which she turns much more emotional, and irritated. She chews out ensigns for whining when they seek her out for her counsel. She is also very seductive & wants to have sex with Alkar, but he pushes her back insulting her in the process.
Troi ends up having sex with a random ensign in her cabin, which Riker notices. Troi starts behaving just like Sev, lashing out at any female Alkar shakes hands with, accusing her of "wanting Alkar", even scratching her lover Riker. Deanna initiates violent sex with Riker but ends up drawing blood by scratching him at the back of his neck. Beverly is not convinced about Sev's natural death. She compares her bio filter files from the transponder from the readings she took from her Tricorder just 3 days later. The readings indicate severe psychological damage in just 3 days.
Troi is also aging rapidly. She tries to attack Alkar when he tries to leave the ship without her and ends up stabbing Picard when he comes in the way. Beverly finds increased neurotransmitter residue in Deanna, the same as she found on Sev. So now Picard allows Beverly to conduct an autopsy on Sev, which proves the late Sev Maylor (Susan French) is no genetic relative of Alkar. Plus, all the organs in her body were of a 30-year-old.
When confronted, Alkar admits Sev was not his mother. Alkar was "joined" to Sev and the joining drains the receptacle's life energy so he can do his diplomatic work for peace without his emotions burdening him. Alkar used this method to unload his darkest thoughts to his receptacles. Alkar had to use Deanna as Sev's death was sudden and unexpected. Plus, Deanna is an Empath and Alkar needed someone he could establish a link with. Even he is surprised by how quickly Deanna is aging as his receptacles typically survive for 2 years.
Alkar justifies this on the basis that he is able to prevent wars, that save thousands of lives. Alkar refuses to release Deanna, now or ever. Alkar's entourage force Picard to go back to his ship and activate the force field around the planet. Beverly plans to "kill" Deanna, thereby forcing Alkar to find a new receptacle from his own entourage. Once the link with her is broken, she will revive Deanna, so long as it is within 30 mins.
Beverly monitors Deanna's brain activity and the moment Alkar is about to break the link and trying to establish a new link with his entourage member Liva, she revives Deanna who dumps his emotional garbage back into Alkar, causing him to age rapidly within seconds and die. Deanna makes a full recovery.
