- Dr. McCoy is diagnosed with a fatal disease and has only one year to live. When the Enterprise is fired upon, they trace the weapons to what appears to be a giant asteroid, some 200 miles wide, that is in fact a ship on a collision course with a heavily populated planet, Darren V. What they find when they beam over is that the local population that don't realize they are on a ship. For McCoy the trip is liberating in many ways. He finds purpose with them but also love with their High Priestess, Natira. Kirk agrees to let him stay behind but when McCoy discovers a possible solution to the impending collision with Darren V, he returns to the alien vessel with Spock intent on re-directing the errant craft.—garykmcd
- Unprovoked missiles fired at the Enterprise draw its attention to an asteroid that turns out to be an immense and ancient spaceship, disguised both within and without against its true identity. Registering as lifeless and presumed automated, its journey through space puts it on a collision course with Daran 5, a heavily populated planet, in a year's time. Also on a year's time is Dr. McCoy, whose recent physical reveals an incurable malady. Kirk, Spock and McCoy beam over to find the ship populated after all, by the descendants of the Fabrini, en route to a new world. Called Yonada, Kirk and company are welcomed (after a fashion) by Natira, the high priestess, who takes them to meet their oracle, a talking obelisk that mets out strict rules and swift punishments. She is taken with McCoy, as he with her. As Kirk and Spock's investigations commit a sacrilege that merits death, McCoy makes the decision to spend his remaining doomed days aboard this doomed vessel with Natira.—statmanjeff
- The Enterprise in attacked by a missile, launched from an asteroid on an independent collision course with highly populated planet, Daran 5, in 396 days. The Asteroid has simple atomic power, and it is under independent propulsion, and an internal atmosphere, but no inhabitants. It is seems to be on automatic controls on the way to Darren 5. McCoy has found he's the only unhealthy crew member on board the ship: only one year of life left, and no cure.
Kirk, Spock, and McCoy beam down to the asteroid surface but are suddenly overpowered by sword-bearing men, commanded by high-priestess Natira (Katherine Woodville) who makes them kneel before a worshiped oracle (which looks like a machine), which smites them down electrically (when Kirk mentions that the Enterprise comes to this world in peace). Spock learns about McCoy's disease when he takes longer to come out of the effects of the electrical shocks, as compared to Kirk and himself. Spocks says that the natives are unaware that they are on a ship that's headed towards a planet.. They are given a medicine by an old servant who suffers pain twitches while telling them "things are not as they teach us", and that he once climbed the mountain and touched the sky (even though it is forbidden). He then dies, due to some telepathic pain..
The earthly visitors are now offered hospitality. The high-priestess asks McCoy to stay as her mate and explains the people is on its way to a new, green world, 'soon' according to the oracle. Spock and Kirk had convinced McCOy to go along, as that would give them time to explore the asteroid. Natira tells McCoy that the Oracle promises her people that they will soon reach a new world, which Natira will rule, and she invites McCOy to rule it by her side. McCoy tells Natira that he has an illness and has 1 yr to live. Kirk and Spock discover the oracle was build by the alien Fabrini civilization, this people is oblivious they are on a space-ship which will collide. The Fabrini sun went Nova many eons ago and to save their civilization, they must have put some citizens on a ship to transport them to another planet. These must be their descendants. They overhear the oracle tell Natira her mate must accept the instrument of obedience in order to stay amongst the people, then it smites the duo (Kirk and Spock, who had broken into the ORacle's chambers to find the control room of the asteroid) and orders their execution; McCoy convinces Natira to spare their lives if he stays as her spouse (knowing that the asteroid will not survive within a year); Kirk and Spock beam up.
McCoy gets an instant and painless brain-implant (The instrument of obedience, a device that allows the ORacle to read everyone's thoughts and deliver punishments as required), a wedding, kisses, and the promise the people will at arrival read the book of revelation written by the Creator. Starfleet orders the Enterpise to leave.
McCoy contacts Kirk about the book, but the Oracle uses the instrument to smites him in pain. Kirk and Spock beam back down where Natira is enraged. Spock removes the instrument of obedience. Kirk tells Natira the truth, that they are on a ship and unless the ship's course is corrected, it will slam into a planet and kill billions of people. Natira believes Kirk and questions the Oracle, who punishes her for her disobedience. McCoy removes her brain implant. Spock and Kirk use the book to find the control room and neutralize the Oracle, who is just a computer. Spock corrects the course of ship. Spock also finds the medical knowledge banks of the Fabrinis and uses that to cure McCoy. Natira decides to stay with her people to guide them at their new home.
