Julia Louis-Dreyfus was visibly pregnant at this time. Throughout this episode, Elaine carries a large present in front of her stomach, concealing Louis-Dreyfus' pregnancy. When Louis-Dreyfus went on maternity leave she was not available for the first two episodes of season four. Her absence was explained by saying she was vacationing in Europe.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus revealed in the DVD commentary that her original storyline involved Elaine being afraid to go through Harlem on the subway, but that it was scrapped out of fear it would be perceived as racist. Instead, the storyline changed to Elaine attending a lesbian wedding, which was extremely progressive at the time.
NBC borrowed the set used in this episode from another studio. For all the subway scenes, the same subway car set was used and decorated with different props such as posters to differentiate between stops. In order for it to appear the car was rocking, stagehands stood outside the car and manually rocked it back and forth with 2x4s. When it was time to return the set to its original sound stage, it was accidentally destroyed when the truck carrying it travelled under an overpass that was too low. The set was rebuilt and was able to be used in further productions.
Kramer (Michael Richards) bets on a horse named "Papa-Nick." It is named after the show's key grip, Pete G. Papanickolas.
The "His father was a mudder" conversation overheard by Kramer is a nod to an Bud Abbott and Lou Costello routine.
