The expression "waiting for the other shoe to drop" derives from the experiences of tenement living where bedrooms were located directly over each other so that tenants below could hear those above removing their shoes before retiring at night, creating an anticipation for the next shoe to hit the floor.
Jerry Lewis was the inspiration behind the story line where George thinks the people in the foundation are talking about him and secretly places a tape recorder in a briefcase to catch them out. According to writers Max Pross and Tom Gammill, Lewis used to do the exact same thing.
