In his 2004 memoir "Gasping for Airtime: Two Years in the Trenches of Saturday Night Live", Jay Mohr recounts that during the pitch meeting on the first show he worked on, he had absolutely no idea for a sketch. He positioned himself to be the next to last in line so he had time to come up with something. During this time, Tom Davis pitched a disastrous idea involving Charles Barkley doing a commercial for Kentucky Fried Chicken. However, Jay overheard somebody speaking about Barney the Dinosaur, and had the idea of Barkley vs Barney that ended up being used in the monologue. The segment was pre-recorded during the week, and while Jay was asked to be present, he was surprised to find that Al Franken oversaw all aspects of the filming of it.
