- Leaving St. Louis, Missouri, Tod and Linc have Memphis, Tennessee as their next intended destination. While they stop for gas and a bite in the small town of Mapleton, Tod intervenes in an altercation where three young men look to be hazing an elderly down-and-outer, which is indeed the case, the older man, Emmett McNeill, a vagabond drifter, who has chosen this lifestyle and who just arrived in town riding the rails with all his possessions in a duffel. Other locals who arrive on the scene, including the police, are quick to point the blame on the two men unknown to them, namely Tod and Emmett, that is until a third party impartial eyewitness confirms that the three young locals are to blame. Emmett ends up being the type of man who doesn't like people to jump to conclusions based on appearances, much as Tod also did with the fight. That declaration by Emmett gets him and Tod on a better understanding with each other. Partly as an act to show Tod and Emmett that Mapleton is a good town at its heart, Andy Ferguson, a manager at Midland, the local rubber processing company, offers them and Linc jobs as long as they want to stay, which all three decide to do. That harmony between the new arrivals to Mapleton and long time Mapleton residents is short-lived, and ends because of two incidents. First, Linc, who ends up getting a sales job with Midland, meets with local businessman, Jim Horst, who ends up trying to use Linc for his own personal gain away from the prying eyes of gossiping locals. And second, two young boys, one being Andy's son, end up coming down with a serious and rare tick-borne sleeping sickness, known to have occurred so far only in Texas. It therefore could have only been transmitted by a carrier who has been in Texas, where Emmett readily admits he has been recently. Based on this and other circumstantial evidence, Emmett is targeted by a lynch mob, led by George Simmons, the father of the other sick boy and father of one of the hazers. The question becomes whether Emmett, and Tod and Linc for that matter, will be able to make it out of Mapleton before they are unfairly convicted and sentenced by George and his mob.—Huggo
