- While working on a car ferry operating between Lobos Island, Texas and the mainland, Tod meets for the first time Alma Hawkes, who has just been released from prison after spending twenty-seven years behind bars for murdering her father with an ice hook, his dead body which she stuffed into a trunk and tried to ship to the mainland. She wants to resume her life on Lobos Island, but her infamy may make for a bumpy ride. Most specifically, she wants to find her son, Mattie, who was born shortly before her incarceration. What Tod is initially unaware of is that Tod looks like Alma's old boyfriend, and thus he could easily pass now as her son. She does believe Tod is Mattie despite Tod trying to explain that he is not. However, the owner of the ferry, Kyle Hawkes, Alma's uncle and older brother of Alma's murdered father, wants Tod to impersonate Mattie for Alma's sake. Tod has to decide what to do, he wanting what is best for Alma. But knowing where Alma's son really is, he who wants nothing to do with his mother, may factor into Tod's decision. If he does go along with Kyle's request, Tod is unaware that his life could be in danger as Alma's delusion is strengthened and memories of her former life on Lobos Island resurface.—Huggo
