The liquor store in "Bay City", from which Rockford orders a delivery, is actually located in Malibu down the road from his trailer.
Bay City is a homage to Raymond Chandler, who used it as his pseudonym for Santa Monica in his stories. Santa Monica is even mentioned when Rockford initially talks to Sergeant Larsen. There would be another one set there in season two's The Girl in the Bay City Boys Club (1975).
As Jim starts to walk off the pier following Nancy Hellman, a red house can be seen on the beach. This house was used as Kris Munroe's beach house in the television series "Charlie's Angels" (1976) and a number of other TV shows of the 1960 s, '70s, and '80s. It was even Rocky's house later in the first season's "Sleight Of Hand".
At the end of the episode Janet (Corinne Camacho) tells Rockford (James Garner) not to worry as she is not going to be like "The Lady with the Lamp" and go around doing good deeds. This is a reference to Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing who went around at night checking on the welfare of soldiers during the Crimean War (1853-56).
This is the second time in a row that Rockford's client is a woman who is using Rockford for her devious purposes. And just like he did with the Countess in the previous episode, he confronts her while she's practicing tennis.
