- the Number 2 from "The Chimes of Big Ben" is returned to oversee the ultimate attempt to extract from Number 6 his reason for resigning, a procedure known as "Degree Absolute" in which The Prisoner is hypnotized into regression and then brought through a simulacrum of Shakespeare's "Seven Ages of Man", in each of which he is forced to confront his own weaknesses before being asked the crucial question over and over. The questioning takes on added urgency for Number 2 because he is given only a week to complete his task, the two men and the butler are locked in an underground suite of rooms with a time lock on the door, and it is established that only one of the two will be allowed to live to see the door open. After a series of interactions that are reminiscent of critically acclaimed stage dramas by Harold Pinter and Samuel Beckett, The Prisoner again succeeds iin preserving his integrity, thus causing Number 2's death. The supervisor appears and as the episode closes, leads The Prisoner off to his promised encounter with Number 1 and the final episode of the series
