- A man just released from prison hurries down a dark street, sees a patrolman, then breaks into a run. He runs to a warehouse, where he's attacked by a gunman. In the struggle, the assailant is killed. The ex-con hires Peter Gunn to find his girlfriend, to help the ex-con beat the murder charge. Police Lt. Jacoby confides to Gunn that the dead man is a hired killer, and the ex-con took the rap for a payroll robbery, from which the take was never found. Gunn tracks down the girlfriend, who has no interest in helping, because she has a new lover. He's the ex-con's partner - who didn't go to prison.—David Stevens
- Season 1 Episode 9 Image of Sally Prologue: A man with head-down, surreptitiously walking down the sidewalk, begins ducking past a parked squad car, hurriedly moves to a back alley stacked with crates, encounters a stranger with a gun when a struggle ensues only to have the stranger shot dead, the innocent man has same weapon in hand, then dropped when police shine their light on him. Jacoby's office, Pete listening to the lieutenant inquire about the shooter, Si Robbin, who wants to see Pete, Pete says he doesn't know him, Jacoby says they picked Si up at the scene of the crime and he is being held on a first-degree murder charge. Si was just released for doing time for an armed robbery, good behavior got him released early, his victim was Louie Dorson, known as a professional assassin, the lamb got the butcher in this killing, per the lieutenant. The money never was recovered from the payroll job Robbin was in on and it is known he didn't pull it off alone. Pete sees Si Robbin per Si's request. Si wants Pete to find his girl Sally Hall, offering double, $2,000 to find her, she'll know what to do, he says. A return to Wilbur's beatnik club, band playing, candles lit at tables, patrons enjoying the tunes, Wilbur is busy sculpting a clay form of Capri, Capri is silent again, chewing gum, Pete is looking for Sally Hall, Sally is dangerous, because Sally belongs to a guy named Joe Nord, all per Wilbur. Pete goes to the bookstore, asks for the book Wilbur suggested, a fat man sends him through a secret sliding partition of books into a separate room, a casino room, where he meets someone he knows named Alley, he asks for Joe Nord, not around, he then asks for Sally Hall. She is at the roulette table, he says he knows Si, Sally says she heard Si was picked up, she feigns the Si relationship, Pete begs to differ, mentioning Joe Nord's name. What a coincidence, Joe Nord's henchman is standing next to Alley, Sally excuses herself by treating Pete like a shirttail relative. Pete looks toward the henchman and Alley, exits. At Mother's, the owner clues Pete into the relationship among Si, Sally and Joe where Si took the wrap for Joe, and Sally is now with Joe. Mother says Si collects $100,000 of the $200,000 heisted in the aforementioned payroll job as long as he keeps his mouth shut and Mother warns Pete about Nord's nasty disposition. Pete goes through the rear door to the terrace, Joe Nord and driver pull up in front then drive around back toward the river. Pete is punched while on the terrace by Joe's henchman, and Nord has Pete punched twice more, leaving him on the deck, the bad guys exit, Edie finds and tries to comfort an injured Pete, they talk, Pete gets up and leaves. In Jacoby's office Pete asks to have Si released on account of new evidence, Jacoby balks, Pete's argument is for Jacoby to get Nord and the $200,000, since Pete states Nord hired Louie Dorson to stop Si from getting his share. Jacoby phones, having Si released, and tells Pete they have had Sally's apartment bugged for weeks. Si Robbin enters Sally's apartment, turns down her offer of a drink, she is obviously nervous, Si wants her, she balks, telling him it has been four years, Si tells Sally he took the wrap for Joe. She says she is Joe's girl, tells Si the place is Joe Nord's, all the while Jacoby, another policeman and Pete are listening to the entire conversation from the basement, with the listening device planted in Sally's apartment. Nord enters Sally's, confronts Si stating he owes Si $100,000, Si doesn't accept the offer, but returns punches Nord, knocking him to the floor, Nord gets up, gun drawn, and enters the hallway. Nord shoots Si walking away in the hall at the head of the stairs, Jacoby coming up the stairs, shoots Nord twice, while Sally witnesses from her doorway and Pete does the same near the lieutenant. Pete asks Sally in front of the Rex Arms Apartments, if there is anything he can do, she says no thanks, he gets into Jacoby's squad, exits, after the ambulance has already left. Tears running down Sally's face as she turns her coat collar up, walking away from the apartment, music plays at episode close.
