To save a life
kapelusznik1817 January 2014
****SPOILERS**** 39th and last of the 1/2 hour "Naked City" episodes has Det. James Halloran, James Franciscus, risk his career as well as facing jail time in him trying to get Lois Heller, Cara Williams, to tell the truth in what she knows about her boyfriend Nicky's whereabouts at the time of the murder that convicted murderer Phil Holmes is about to pay the ultimate price for. Holmes is set to be electrocuted at Sing Sing Prison is less then a half hour with only Lois being to one to save him if she's willing to. Something that the desperate Halloran is determined to have her do. It was in fact Halleron who was responsible in Holmes arrest and conviction and now if Holmes is executed he'll have to live with that fact that he sent an innocent man to the electric chair for the rest of his life.

As the minutes slowly tick by with Holmes' execution about to transpire Halloran breaks down Louis' defenses in putting her on a king size guilt trip in what she's about, or better yet not about, to do. Keep the evidence in her boyfriend's murder from the police and D.A until an innocent man Phil Holmes ends up paying for it by being zapped in Sing Sing's electric chair! It's finally when the booze that Louis has been drinking starts to ware off and she realizes the seriousness of the situation she finds herself in that she starts to come clean in what she knows. But would it be in time to save Phil Holmes life!

***SPOILERS*** A bit heavy handed but still works with James Franciscus at his best as the concerned police detective who's out to save the life of innocent man that he, by testifying against him in court, sent him on his way to be strapped into the hot seat. Cara Williams is equally as good as the confused scared and on the brink of a nervous breakdown woman who's testimony can save Holmes but can't quite bring herself to do it.Somewhat of a cop-out ending but still very effective which makes this "Naked City" episode one of the best of the entire five seasons it was on the air.

It has a point

Warning: Spoilers
Not alot of action, but tons of passion to save a life of a man whose innocent.

The last 22 mins of a man sentenced to death for a crime he didn't commit, is potrayed very sincerely by a police detective snd a woman who lied for another sorry man in her life.

Jimmy convinced her that this innocent man maybe she never knew is worth alot more than the man she knows doesn't love her, just uses her.

I think the passion Jimmy shows how desperate the situation is, with just minutes to spare in an innocent mans life.

He even convinces another officer, who has alot more experience, that its worth it.

Finally, near the last minute she knows Jimmy is right.

Good show.

Self-indulgent Silliphant

Behind the cryptic/pointless title lies a lousy episode of "Naked City". Culprit is writer Stirlng Silliphant, concocting a lifeless, dull episode starring Cara Williams as a bitter woman whose alibi for her sugardaddy is resulting in the wrong man about to be put to death in the electric chair at Sing Sing 23 minutes from now.

Franciscus bursts into her posh ($400 a month rent back in 1959) apartment and harangues her endlessly. But she won't budge and retract her false testimony to let the innocent 20-year-old live. She's too busy drowning her guilt in champagne will listening to a big-band playing on a deep-groove format LP.

Nothing happens; Franciscus' arguments are unconvincing and so little content is provided that I got to concentrate on how much cigarette smoking the two of them indulged in, years before TV banned the fatal habit.

Was this an opportunity for Stirling to make a case against capital punishment? Yes, but he decided not to. Cara does get to give a speech on how men dominate and stultify women, but that's about it in terms of making a point. I deduce that this was greenlighted because the series was over-budget (after 38 episodes) and did what TV series do in such a situation -make a segment with action, casting and everything else reduced to a minimum. In this case, only 3 actors total and one set.

Bert Leonard intones his usual spiel at the opening about filming entirely on location, not in a studio, but there's no reason this apartment set was on location.

Two excellent actors stuck in a badly written script

The story and dialogue is so absurd, it could be one of the worst Naked City episode of the lot. Silliphant's heavy handed moralizing also made some episodes of Route 66 tough sledding.
