- The Monkees are chosen as Chic Magazine's 'Typical Young Americans Of The Year' (cue Monkees Theme). Unfortunately, the way they are represented in the article makes them lose many friends instantly.
- Madame Quagmyer, the editor of Chic Magazine, a fashion publication, is seeking material about people who are fresh and new as she prepares for the journal's Typical Young American issue. Toby Willis, a young staff writer, recommends a story on The Monkees, four young men she knows; she presents Madame Q photos of Micky and Mike, and despite staff photographer Rob Roy Fingerhead's sneering dismissal of them, Madame Q agrees to Toby's request, deciding the boys can be made over into the magazine's image.
Quagmyer sends Rob Roy with Toby to interview and photograph the boys. Fingerhead and the boys immediately take a mutual dislike to each other, so much so that Mike tries to talk Toby out of the article, but she, with noticeable desperation, urges them to go along. Out of their respect to the lovely Toby, and against their better judgement, the boys decide to do the piece.
They arrive at Chic's offices and are interviewed by four of Madame Q's other staff writers, all even snootier than Rob Roy as they take great pride in the colleges from which they graduated (even such obscure schools as Bryn Mawr School For Girls outside Philadelphia - alma mater of the Paul Lynde-esque Miss Osborne - and Bennington liberal arts college in Vermont). The boys don't make it particularly easy for Rob Roy to photograph them as they prance around the magazine studio amid the strains of their song "Laugh."
When Toby turns in her well-written article about the guys, Quagmyer sees it to be an accurate portrayal of them - and promptly dumps it in the garbage because it is such. Anticipating his boss' disapproval, Fingerhead has already authored a piece that paints the guys as self-absorbed party boys. The guys' friends avoid them once the article is published, and Toby apologizes for what has happened, and announces that she has quit her job because of it.
A message comes through that Chic Magazine has invited the guys to come to a ceremony where they will be presented with the "Typical Young Americans of the Year" award. The guys thus scheme to get even with the magazine not only for themselves, but for Toby, as well. At the subsequent awards ceremony the boys in their own inimitable fashion embarrass Madame Quagmyer and Rob Roy Fingerhead. Davy pulls off a wig to reveal a bald head, Micky hugs Quagmyer and flirts with her, Rob Roy's camera ends up broken, among other things. The whole awards ceremony dissolves into chaos, and Madame Quagmyer is left looking foolish and thoroughly petulant.
The guys show up at Chic Magazine the following day to see Toby and are surprised to find that she is now the magazine's hard-nosed editor. She points out her two assistants: Madame Quagmyer and Rob Roy Fingerhead, who both look mournful as they sit at their typewriters. The Monkees, having their victory for themselves and Toby, respond by performing "You Just May Be The One."
