On the eve of his birthday, the oldest man in the world, Hiram Hollings, is found dead on his bed. Stottlemeyer's wife, Karen, is a documentary filmmaker that made a film about Hollings and asks her husband to investigate the case since she believes he was murdered. Stottlemeyer calls Monk to help him, and they go to the crime scene, where Monk finds evidence that Hollings was murdered. Meanwhile, Stottlemeyer and Karen have an argument and Stottlemeyer moves to Monk's home to stay with him, but their relationship is problematic. However, they proceed investigating the case.
