"The Millionaire" Millionaire Katherine Boland (TV Episode 1960) Poster

Marvin Miller: Michael Anthony

Quotes

  • Michael Anthony : [Entering study]  You sent for me, sir?

John Beresford Tipton : Mike, what does this book represent to you?

    [Hands volume to Anthony]

Michael Anthony : [Examining book and returning it to Tipton]  Well, sir, it's a type of directory.

John Beresford Tipton : A very special type directory, Mike - the Social Register. Now, what's this book?

[Hands a second volume to Anthony]

Michael Anthony : [Examining book and returning it to Tipton]  That's "Who's Who" - a listing of very prominent people.

John Beresford Tipton : These two books represent the ultimate of a great many people. A name listed in one isn't necessarily listed in the other. But those names printed in both are to be reckoned with, eh?

    [Gives envelope to Anthony]

John Beresford Tipton : Our next millionaire, Mike.

[Anthony accepts envelope, bows and departs]

  • Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  Katherine Boland was born at a time when the Social Register was a yardstick of polite society. She was pretty, charming, the center of attention for every party. And her own debut was, if not the highlight of the 1928 season, but of her life.

  • Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  My name is Michael Anthony. Until his death, I was Executive Secretary to one of the world's richest men - John Beresford Tipton. He had what was perhaps the strangest hobby in the world, and one of the few fortunes large enough to indulge it. This is Silverstone, Mr. Tipton's fabulous 60,000-acre estate. Here, after his retirement from the world of business and high finance, he pursued his hobby, which was every now and then, giving away to a total stranger the sum of $1,000,000. And because he insisted on remaining anonymous, I was the man who actually delivered the check.

  • Katherine Boland : [Anthony rings the doorbell of the grand old house. Boland peers through the peak hole in the front door]  Yes, what is it?

Michael Anthony : Miss Katherine Boland?

Katherine Boland : Are you a salesman? I have a sign on the door.

Michael Anthony : My name is Michael Anthony. I have something of great importance for you.

Katherine Boland : I'm really not interested in whatever it is.

[Boland closes the peak hole, pinching Anthony's finger]

    Michael Anthony : Oh!

Katherine Boland : [Boland opens the door]  What did you say your name is?

    Michael Anthony : Michael Anthony.

Katherine Boland : Mr. Anthony, I think you are very rude. I told you that I'm not interested in whatever it is you're selling.

Michael Anthony : Might I come in for a moment? I assure you I have nothing to sell.

Katherine Boland : Well then, what is it?

Michael Anthony : [Anthony removes a check from his briefcase]  It is a gift for you.

    Katherine Boland : Gift?

Michael Anthony : [Holds up a check for Boland to read]  This is a cashier's check, made out in your name, for $1,000,000. It is yours for just a few moments of your time.

Katherine Boland : [Leads Anthony to the parlor]  Why,. I guess I can spare a moment or two.

    Michael Anthony : Thank you.

Katherine Boland : I trust this isn't one of those crude commercial schemes

Michael Anthony : Oh, no, Miss Boland. I assure you this is not that.

Katherine Boland : Please sit down.

Michael Anthony : [Sitting]  Thank you. Now, if you will look over this check, it's made out in your name, and the taxes have already been paid on it.

Katherine Boland : [Boland returns the check to Anthony. She stands and walks over to a cord used to summon help and yanks it]  My niece will brew us some tea.

Michael Anthony : Oh. Thank you, but I have a plane to catch.

[Holds up a check for Boland to read]

Michael Anthony : This is a cashier's check, made out in your name. Miss Boland, you are aware that the amount of the check is $1,000,000.

Katherine Boland : The tea will only take a moment. Just relax and make yourself comfortable.

Beth Boland : [Elizabeth Bolden enters the parlor]  Yes, Aunt Katherine?

Katherine Boland : This is my niece, Elizabeth.

Michael Anthony : How do you do?

Katherine Boland : Will you make us a pot of tea? Mr. Anthony and I have some business to discuss.

Beth Boland : Okay, one pot of tea coming up!

    [Elizabeth departs]

Katherine Boland : [to Anthony]  She really is a very sweet girl. Sometimes she forgets her manners.

Michael Anthony : Now about this check. You see, I represent a philanthropist who insists on remaining anonymous. He has authorized me to give you this cashier's check for $1,000,000to do with as you wish, with only one stipulation.

Katherine Boland : Before you go any further, I'd like to make it clear that the Bolands never give endorsements to commercial ventures.

Michael Anthony : Believe me, there are no strings attached. This is a gift, Miss Boland. The only requirement is that you never reveal the exact amount or the source of this Believe me, there are no strings attached. This is a gift, Miss Boland. The only requirement is that you never reveal the exact amount or the source of this

[Anthony tries to think of a word of which Boland approves]

Michael Anthony : endowment to anyone, except your husband if you should marry. Now, if you will sign this paper, the money is yours.

Katherine Boland : [Boland carefully reviews the agreement]  Well, everything seems to be in order. Oh, Mr. Anthony, what assurance do I have that this benefactor won't reveal to whom he gave gift to us, for publicity purposes, perhaps?

Michael Anthony : Oh, believe me, your security is quite safe.

Katherine Boland : Well, I think I can trust you. You have an honest face.

    [Signs the agreement]
