In New York City, a man is shot in the face and has severed fingers to avoid his identification. Frank Black arrives to help the Brooklyn Lt. McCormick in the investigation, since it is the third similar case with the same Modus Operandi in the Russian community. Frank teams up with the Russian investigator Yuri Surov and the undercover agent Andrei Melnikov and goes to the morgue to see the bodies of the three victims. Frank believes Yuri and Andrei are omitting information and asks Peter Watts to help him. Yuri and Andrei go to a Russian nightclub and Frank arrives in the place. While Yuri tries to convince Frank to leave the club, Andrei is shot in the face by Yaponchik. Franks hears his name, but Yuri tells that Yaponchik is a Russian legend. Peter tells Frank that many Russians believe that Yaponchik is the responsible for the Chernobyl nuclear accident and is connected to the Antichrist. He also shows a photo of Yuri and Andrei in Chernobyl. Soon Franks finds that Yaponchik is Sergei Stepanovich, a man protected by diplomatic immunity in the Russian Embassy that is perpetuating the legend, and Yuri is trying to kill him.
"Maranatha" is a messy episode of "Millennium", with the plot based on an evil legend, Yaponchik, that could be the antichrist. The ambiguous plot entwins religious theme with serial-killer and does not work. Yuri Surov is a confused character, and the end of the story is disappointing. My vote is four.
