"Dance Kali dance!!!"
Aloha! I'll start out by saying that I liked the humour of the scene where Max is about to leap though the portal to his latest perilous task, which just happens to be located in one of the dryers of a laundrette, when he espies an impressionable little kid nearby and he cautions him against copying his actions in a really funny way that it's like the show's poking a little gentle fun at the 'ridiculousness' of itself for a second, and I found that kind of hilarious and clever. I was also thoroughly amused by the running gag in this one of the generally all-knowing and infallible Virgil consistently being wrong about things! I enjoyed the opening prologue where a foolish cultist awakens the spirit of Naja inside the little statue and promptly gets it when he dares to mouth off and make demands of the huge demonic snake-man that appears before him! Naja is the villain of this episode only, and he's quite a fearsomely-designed awesome reptilian foe, having the appearance of a massive cobra-like warrior. His mission in the story is to gain control over the Hindu goddess of chaos and destruction Kali and use her supernatural might to destroy all of India, and his own abilities appear to be control of all snakes, great distance acidic venom spit, and he can morph himself into a completely serpentine giant cobra form in which he can still speak! And he's actually the only connection this episode has to the toy-line as he's adapted from the Battle Max action figure/play-set "Mighty Max Strikes Fang". And I don't think it's a half-bad portrayal of Kali, she's wrathful and scary while hypnotised, but gentler when she's snapped back to her senses at the end. I don't reckon Kali's appearance would have been very well received in her mother country though, as her qualities and items are kind of downplayed, and for most of the story she's just an unwitting mindless pawn of an evil entity. I remember Kali being one of the classic series of miniature rubber figurines "Monster in My Pocket". Anyone remember those little guys? Her signature dance of destruction is a tad on the silly side, but it's still by far the most impressively animated sequence of the episode. And it's great to see Max once again take on a more active role in the conflict when he vanquishes the fires of Kali by summoning and temporarily assuming the powers of Shiva - Kali's husband and male counterpart. He even manages to break Naja's control over her without having to destroy her, which he couldn't bring himself to do because he's the Mighty One, and he has a mighty good heart! Max himself helping to solve the crisis at hand seemed to be a bit of a regular occurrence in these episodes leading up the end. The indentations Max has to put his feet into and strike a certain pose in order to begin the spell were very reminiscent of those commonly found in the toys. That was a very sweet affectionate little touch if it was intentional. It's a good-not-great episode, I thought there being two well done and different impressive monsters in one story was very fun, and the Indian theme added a little more to the varied mix of the many ideas the show used. There's not too many of these left to go now. I'll miss getting into them to prepare for my review. I've tried to the best of my meagre ability to make them all hopefully fun and enjoyable, and I hope that you've at least found them all worthwhile to read. There's better episodes sure, but I'd recommend this one, it's been around a fairly long time now, and if you've never managed to see it well uh..that's your, that's on you! ๐
